in simplicity you overcome her who is adorned with costly things, being more beautiful than she who is arrayed in gold. You do not seek what is fitting for you, but you pursue what is not fitting for you, when you ought to pursue good works. For this reason virgins are less honored than worldly women; for they do not show forth works worthy of their virginity. We have said these things not to all, but rather to all, to those who are accountable, that they may be sober-minded, and to those who are not, that they may make the others sober-minded. But see that the rebuke does not come to action. For we have not spoken to grieve you, but that we may be corrected, that we may glory in you. May it be that we all do the things that are pleasing to God, and live to his glory, so as to obtain the promised good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the. holy Spirit be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

HOMILY IX. Let a woman learn in quietness with all submissiveness. But I do not permit a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression; but she will be saved through childbearing. if they continue in

faith and love and holiness with self-control. 1. The blessed Paul requires great modesty from women, great propriety. For this reason he proceeds not as far as their gestures, not as far as their apparel, but even as far as their voice; and what does he say? Let a woman learn in quietness. What is this? Let a woman not even speak, he says, in church; which also he said when writing in his Epistle to the Corinthians: For it is shameful for women to speak in church. Why so? Because the law, he says, has subjected them. And again elsewhere, If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home. But at that time women were silent from such teaching; but now among them there is much noise, much clamor, much talking, nowhere else so much as here; one might see them all talking about things that are not even discussed in the marketplace or in the baths. For as if coming for this very purpose, that they may have relaxation, so they are all occupied in unprofitable conversation. For this reason everything has become upside down; and they do not understand that it is not possible to learn anything useful without being quiet. For when the discourse is hurried on toward conversation, but no one pays attention to what is being said, what is the profit? For she ought to be so silent, he says, as not only not to speak about 62.544 worldly things, but not even about spiritual things in church. This is adornment, this is modesty, this will be able to adorn her more than her garments; if she so restrains herself, she will also be able to make her prayers with much propriety. But I do not permit a woman to teach. I do not permit, he says; what sequence does this have here? And a great one. He was discoursing on quietness, on propriety, on modesty; he said, I do not wish them to speak. Therefore, wishing to cut off from them every opportunity of speaking, let them not even teach, he says, but let them have the rank of learners; for thus through silence they will also show their subjection. For the female sex is somehow talkative; for this reason he restrains it on all sides. For Adam, he says, was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. What then have these things to do with the women of today? Yes, he says; the male sex enjoyed the greater honor;
