more fearful; for we shall all stand before that one, to give an account for what we have said and done. Because of that tribunal, the sorrows of this present life are bearable for us. For the hope of things to come is sufficient comfort for those who are wronged. But the philanthropic Lord has added to us your great genius, shining with faith and love of God. 80 TO EUTRECHIUS THE PREFECT. I was very surprised that your greatness did not inform us of the plots against us. For to dispel them perhaps had some difficulty for those unable to refute the falsehood; but to make known what was being contrived did not require power, but a benevolent disposition. And we had hoped, when your magnificence was called to the queen of cities, and had been allotted to adorn the high throne of the prefects, that all ecclesiastical turmoil would be calmed. But we have experienced disturbances which we had not seen even at the beginning of the schism. For the Churches of Phoenicia are in lament; and the Churches of Palestine are also in lament, as all report; and the letters of the most God-loving bishops also make clear their grief. And all the saints among us groan, and every pious assembly laments; and expecting a cessation of the former troubles, we have received others again. For we have been confined to Cyrrhus, if indeed the memorandum shown to us is true, which they say was written by our victorious emperor himself; it runs thus: "Since so-and-so, the bishop of this city, constantly gathers synods and this disturbs the orthodox, with due care and prudence, make him stay in Cyrrhus, and not go to another city." I, therefore, have accepted the verdict and embrace the tranquility. And your greatness bears witness to my opinion. For it knows how, when entering Antioch, I departed without taking leave, because of those who wished to detain me there. But those who have given both ears to the slanderers, and have not kept the other for us, have clearly done wrong. For even to murderers and those who defile others' beds a place for defense is given, and they do not receive the sentence of punishment until they are either convicted in person, or have confessed that the indictment is true. But a high priest who has been a bishop for twenty-five years, and who lived the time before this in a monastery, never having troubled a court, nor ever having endured an indictment from anyone, has become the victim of slander, not even being deemed worthy, like a tomb-robber, to receive an inquiry as to whether the accusations are true. But they have done wrong, while I have not been wronged; but I have even prepared myself for greater troubles. For even if they are displeased ten thousand times that I lament the calamities of Phoenicia, I will not cease doing this as long as I see them. For only the divine judgment seat is fearful to me. But I pray, nevertheless, that they may obtain forgiveness from the God of all; and that your greatness may always be esteemed and excel in all good things, and speak boldly against falsehood and fight for the truth. But let those who have devised these things know, that even if I go to the ends of the inhabited world, God will not allow the impious dogmas to prevail, but by His nod He will also overthrow those who worship abominable dogmas. 81 TO NOMUS THE CONSUL. I enjoyed your great genius for but a small part of a day, a violent necessity having deprived me of what I longed for. But I hoped that even the short meeting
