and through the lawgiver: "For their vine is of the vine of Sodom." And the Lord in the holy gospels: "A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country." He calls the people from the Gentiles a colt, as being untamed and having had no colt-tamer. For this the Lord also hinted at, having commanded the apostles "to go into the village over against you, and to loose the ass that was tied, and her colt, on which, he says, no man 95 ever sat"; for neither patriarch nor lawgiver nor prophet took thought for the salvation of the Gentiles; but the divine apostles, being commanded to make disciples of all nations and to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, loosed the ass, that is, the nature of men, which was bound by the chains of sin; and they also loosed the colt, the people that had sprung from it; and putting upon him their own garments, that is, the grace which they had received; "For as many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ"; and they rendered the untamed colt obedient to the rein, and they set the Master upon him, and bound him to the vine, that is, to themselves; for the apostles were from the Jews; and not only they but also the seventy disciples, and the three thousand whom the first of the apostles caught in his net at the same time, and the five thousand, and the many myriads of whom the thrice-blessed James spoke to the most divine Paul. Therefore, the believers were joined not only to the apostles but also to the disciples of the apostles; and foreseeing this the patriarch said: "Binding his colt unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine." Then he also foretells the passion: "He will wash his robe in wine, and his garment in the blood of grapes; his eyes shall be joyful from wine, and his teeth whiter than milk." And he calls his body a robe, and his blood wine; since the Master has also called the mystical wine blood; and we hear the evangelist John teaching that when the soldier pierced his side, there came out blood and water. And these streams flowed down over the body; for this reason the patriarch says: "He will wash his robe in wine, and his garment in the blood of grapes." Then he shows the gladness that would come from the passion: 96 "his eyes shall be joyful from wine." For the saving passion is the joy of the world; that he called the passion so, the Lord himself is a witness, saying: "Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me." Thus also he said to the sons of Zebedee: "Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink"? The joyfulness of the eyes, therefore, signifies the joy after the passion; for after the passion and the resurrection, the disciples were sent into all the world, offering salvation to those who believe. And he likened the clarity and transparency of the teaching to the whitest teeth; "for," he says, "his teeth are whiter than milk." The patriarch foretold so many things when blessing Judah; and of Zebulun he foretold his dwelling by the sea; and of Issachar, his farming; and of Dan, according to some, the things that were done by Samson. For he was of this tribe; and he was numbered among the judges; and for this reason, he says, he said: "Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel." But some say that he foretold the events concerning Laish, which is now called Paneas. For suddenly some from this tribe, setting out, attacked this city, and took it by force, and dwelt in it, and gave it their own name; for they called it Dan. But I think that the Divine Spirit, having prophesied through the patriarch concerning our Savior, also spoke through this prophecy concerning the Antichrist; and the things written are very fitting for him: "For," he says, "Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel." For just as, he says, our Savior and Lord, having sprung from the tribe of Judah
