they are separated by excellence of knowledge, yet by the unity of their doctrine they breathe together again into one another. If this is so, how is it not much more just for us, who are established as servants of the great God in such a choice of worship, to be of one mind 2.71.3 with one another? Let us then examine with greater reasoning and more understanding what has been said, whether it is right that for the sake of a few vain disputes about words among you, brothers should be opposed to brothers, and the precious bond of the synod should be severed by an impious dissension through us, who contend with one another over such small and in no way necessary matters. These things are vulgar and more fitting for childish follies than becoming for the understanding of priests and prudent men. 2.71.4 Let us willingly stand aloof from diabolical temptations. Our great God, the savior of all, has extended a common light to all; by His providence, permit me, the servant of the better one, to bring this endeavor to its conclusion, so that by my address and service and insistence of admonition I might bring back His own peoples to the fellowship of the synod. 2.71.5 For since, as I said, there is among us one faith and one understanding of our persuasion, and the commandment of the law through its own parts encloses the whole in one purpose of soul, let this matter, which has raised a little contention among you with one another, since it does not pertain to the power of the whole law, in no way create any separation and dissension for you. 2.71.6 And I say these things, not as compelling you by all means to agree with the exceedingly foolish inquiry, of whatever sort it may be. For the honor of the synod can be preserved intact for you and one and the same fellowship among all can be maintained, even if some disagreement should arise among you in part with one another over a very small matter, since we do not all desire the same thing in all matters, nor does one nature or opinion prevail among us. 2.71.7 Concerning the divine providence, therefore, let there be among you one faith, one understanding, one covenant of the better one; but as for the minute points of these inquiries which you dispute with one another, even if you do not come together to one opinion, it is fitting that they remain within your reasoning, kept in the secret of your mind. 2.71.8 But let the excellence of common friendship and faith in the truth and honor towards God and the worship of the law remain unshaken among you; return now to friendship and grace with one another, restore to the whole people their proper embraces, and you yourselves, having as it were cleansed your own souls, recognize one another again. For friendship often becomes sweeter after the laying aside of enmity, when it returns again to reconciliation. 2.72.1 Restore to me, therefore, calm days and nights free from care, so that for me too some pleasure of pure light and the cheerfulness of a quiet life for the future may be preserved; but if not, I must groan and be altogether dissolved in tears and not even endure my lifetime gently. For when the peoples of God, I mean my fellow-servants, are separated by so unjust and harmful a contention with one another, how is it possible for me to be settled in my mind for the future? 2.72.2 And that you may perceive the excess of my grief at this: recently having arrived at the city of the Nicomedians, I was immediately hastening in my mind towards the East. But as I was already hastening to you and was in large part with you, the news of this matter checked my purpose to the contrary, so that I might not be forced to see with my eyes what I thought not even possible to perceive with my ears. 2.72.3 Open for me now, therefore, by your concord the way to the East, which you have closed by your contentions with one another, and permit me quickly to see you together with all the other peoples rejoicing, and to confess the due thanks for the common concord and freedom of all with words of good omen to the better one. 2.73.1 Thus indeed the God-beloved provided for the peace of the church of God through the letter that was sent down. And he served not only by cooperating with the letter, but also with that of the
