of the one who became by nature the high priest of all for our salvation, Melchizedek was one type. But since you say that there is another king and priest according to the order of Melchizedek, dare to say the rest as well: "without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life." And consider the evil that arises from this; for such a one will be found to be another God incarnate, who, according to the order of Melchizedek, and not according to the order of Aaron, performs the sacred rites for our salvation.
5. But why should we go on at length? In the holy anaphora at the holy
table, after the high priests and deacons, and every sacerdotal order, the emperors are commemorated with the laity, when the deacon says: "And of the laymen who have fallen asleep in the faith, Constantine, Constans, and the rest." And so also he commemorates the living emperors, after all the consecrated. As he was saying these things, Menas cried out: "By saying these things you have torn the Church." And he said to him: "If the one who speaks the words of the holy Scriptures and of the holy Fathers tears the Church, what will the one who subverts the dogmas of the saints be shown to be doing to the Church, without which it is not even possible for there to be a Church?" And the sakellarios turned and said to the (120) men of the exarch with a shout: "Tell the exarch: 'Should you have let such a man live where you rule?'" And taking him outside, they brought in the disciple, and demanding that he speak against his master, as one who had troubled Pyrrhus, he answered the truth with a calm voice, that no one had honored Pyrrhus as he had honored him; and he was ordered to cry out. And since he did not consent to be estranged from the reverent voice befitting monks, he ordered him to be beaten by those present; and striking him with their fists, they left him half-dead. And having released them to the prisons, Menas came upon the old man, saying in the presence of the officials: "God has cast you down, and brought you here, that you might receive what you did to others, leading all astray into the doctrines of Origen." To whom the servant of God said in the presence of all: "Anathema to Origen and his doctrines, and to everyone who thinks like him." And the patrician Epiphanius said: "The charge brought against him by you, my lord abba Menas, is dissolved, so that even if he were an Origenist, since he has anathematized, he has freed himself from such a reproach." And I for one no longer accept such a thing being said about him. Each of them was led away to the place where he was being guarded.
6. And on the same day, about the same time of the lamp-lighting, Troilus the patrician, and
Sergius Eucratas, the one in charge of the imperial table, came to the servant of God, the old man, and having sat down, they bade him also to sit, and said to him: "Tell us, my lord abba, about the dispute concerning the doctrines that took place between you and Pyrrhus in Africa and Rome; and by what means you persuaded him to anathematize his own doctrine, and to agree with yours." And he recounted to them everything in order, as much as his memory preserved. And he said this: "I have no doctrine of my own, but the common doctrine of the Catholic Church. For I did not initiate any sort of expression, that it should be called my own doctrine." And after the narration they said to him: "Do you not have communion with the throne of Constantinople?" And he said: "I do not have communion." "For what reason do you not have communion?" they said. He answered: "Because they cast out the four holy councils through the nine chapters that were issued in Alexandria; and through the Ecthesis composed by Sergius in this city, and for this reason through the Typos recently set forth in the sixth indiction; and because what they dogmatized through the chapters, they condemned through the Ecthesis; and what
