and taught his god-befitting titles, that he is mighty God, that he is ruler, that he is prince of peace, that he is father of the age to come. But here he also teaches his carnal kinship, that he has sprung from Jesse according to the flesh; and Jesse was the father of David. 2And the spirit of God will rest upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and might, a spirit of knowledge and piety; 3a spirit of the fear of God will fill him. For each of the prophets received some partial grace, but in him dwelt "all the fullness of the Godhead bodily," and according to his humanity he had all the gifts of the spirit; "For from his fullness," according to the divine John, "we have all received." He will not judge according to appearance nor will he reprove according to speech. For he did not heed the authority of the scribes and Pharisees, but with boldness he rebuked their lawlessness; saying, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites," and other such things which are easy for those who wish to understand in the holy gospels. 4But he will judge the lowly with a righteous judgment. For some he freed from the madness of demons, others he delivered from the dominion of passions, and to those who believe he offered a teaching that is beneficial and procures life. And he will reprove with uprightness the glorious ones of the earth. This he did gently in his first appearance, but he will do it royally and with authority in the second, seated upon divine thrones and issuing righteous verdicts. And he will strike the earth with the word of his mouth. For by the God-befitting teaching of the apostles he made the earth a heaven, turning many in every nation away from earthly affairs and preparing them to embrace the heavenly citizenship. And with the spirit through his lips he will slay the wicked. This also the divine apostle foretold concerning the antichrist; for he says, "Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will slay with the breath of his mouth and will bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming." This also this same prophet cries out a little later: "Let the wicked be taken away, that he may not see the glory of the Lord." 5And righteousness will be the belt of his loins, and truth the girdle of his sides. This also blessed David said: "Gird your sword upon your thigh, O mighty one, in your comeliness and your beauty, and prosper and reign for the sake of truth and meekness and righteousness." Through truth and righteousness he included every form of virtue; he says that these have become for him both a mantle and a belt. Then of the |117 a… economy he tells the achievements: 6Then the wolf will feed with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the bull will feed together. Through the tame and wild animals he tropologically taught the difference of human characters. For to the wolf he likens the rapacious character, to the sheep the tame and gentle, and again to the leopard the varied—for the animal is spotted—and to the kid the simple and guileless; thus to the lion the proud and ruling, to the bull the bold, and to the calf that which is free from these. But nevertheless he says they will feed in the same place. And we see the fulfillment of the prophecy in the churches, both kings and governors and generals and soldiers and craftsmen, and servants and beggars partaking of the sacred table at the same time, hearing the same words, being deemed worthy of the same font. And a little child will lead them. For those who exult in power and are puffed up with wisdom, a man who is an infant in malice according to the apostolic exhortation and is adorned with the simplicity of a fisherman leads and pastures. 7And the cow and the bear will feed together, and their young will be together, and the lion will eat straw like an ox. And we see the fulfillment of these things also; for many who abound in wealth and have abundant opportunities for luxury prefer fasting to extravagance and

Ἐνταῦθα δὲ καὶ τὴν σαρκικὴν αὐτοῦ διδάσκει συγγένειαν ὅτι ἐξ Ἰεσσαὶ κατὰ σάρκα βεβλάστηκεν· πατὴρ δὲ Ἰεσσαὶ τοῦ ∆αυίδ. 2Καὶ ἀναπαύσεται ἐπ' αὐτὸν πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ, πνεῦμα σοφίας καὶ συνέσεως, πνεῦμα βουλῆς καὶ ἰσχύος, πνεῦμα γνώσεως καὶ εὐσεβείας· 3πνεῦμα φόβου θεοῦ ἐμπλήσει αὐτόν. Τῶν μὲν γὰρ προφητῶν ἕκαστος μερικήν τινα ἐδέξατο χάριν, ἐν αὐτῷ δὲ κατῴκησε «πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς», καὶ κατὰ τὸ ἀνθρώπινον δὲ πάντα εἶχε τοῦ πνεύματος τὰ χαρίσματα· «Ἐκ γὰρ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ» κατὰ τὸν θεσπέσιον Ἰωάννην «ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν.» Οὐ κατὰ τὴν δόξαν κρινεῖ οὐδὲ κατὰ τὴν λαλιὰν ἐλέγξει. Οὐ γὰρ προσεῖχε τῇ δυναστείᾳ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ Φαρισαίων, ἀλλὰ μετὰ παρρησίας αὐτῶν τὴν παρανομίαν διήλεγχεν· «Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν» λέγων «γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί» καὶ τὰ ἄλλα ὅσα τοιαῦτα ἃ ῥᾴδιον τοῖς βουλο μένοις ἐν τοῖς ἱεροῖς εὐαγγελίοις κατανοεῖν. 4Ἀλλὰ κρινεῖ ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ταπεινῷ κρίσιν. Τοὺς μὲν γὰρ τῆς τῶν δαιμόνων ἠλευθέρου μανίας, τοὺς δὲ τῆς τῶν παθημάτων ἐπικρατείας ἀπήλλαττε, τοῖς δέ γε πιστεύουσι τὴν ὀνησιφόρον καὶ ζωῆς πρόξενον διδασκαλίαν προσέφερεν. Καὶ ἐλέγξει ἐν εὐθύτητι τοὺς ἐνδόξους τῆς γῆς. Τοῦτο πράως μὲν ἐν τῇ προτέρᾳ ἐπιφανείᾳ πεποίηκε, βασιλικῶς δὲ καὶ ἐξουσιαστικῶς ἐν τῇ δευτέρᾳ ποιήσει τοῖς θείοις ἐγκαθήμενος θώκοις καὶ τὰς δικαίας ψήφους ἐκφέρων. Καὶ πατάξει τὴν γῆν τῷ λόγῳ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ. Τῇ γὰρ θεοπρεπεῖ τῶν ἀποστόλων διδασκαλίᾳ οὐρανὸν τὴν γῆν ἀπειργάσατο, πολλοὺς ἐν ἑκάστῳ ἔθνει τῶν γηίνων ἀποστήσας πραγμάτων καὶ τὴν οὐράνιον ἀσπάςασθαι πολιτείαν παρασκευάσας. Καὶ τῷ πνεύματι διὰ χειλέων ἀνε λεῖ τὸν ἀσεβῆ. Τοῦτο καὶ ὁ θεῖος ἀπόστολος περὶ τοῦ ἀντιχρίστου προείρηκεν· «Τότε» γάρ φησιν «ἀποκα λυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος, ὃν ὁ κύριος Ἰησοῦς ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ καταργήσει τῇ ἐπι φανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ.» Τοῦτο καὶ αὐτὸς οὗτος ὁ προφήτης μετ' ὀλίγα βοᾷ· «Ἀρθήτω ὁ ἀσεβής, ἵνα μὴ ἴδῃ τὴν δόξαν κυρίου.» 5Καὶ ἔσται δικαιοσύνῃ ἐζωσμένος τὴν ὀςφῦν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀληθείᾳ εἰλημμένος τὰς πλευρὰς αὐτοῦ. Τοῦτο καὶ ὁ μακάριος ∆αυὶδ ἔφη· «Περίζωσαι τὴν ῥομφαίαν σου ἐπὶ τὸν μηρόν σου, δυνατέ, τῇ ὡραιότητί σου καὶ τῷ κάλλει σου καὶ ἔντεινε καὶ κατευοδοῦ καὶ βασίλευε ἕνεκεν ἀληθείας καὶ πραότητος καὶ δικαιοσύνης.» ∆ιὰ τῆς ἀληθείας καὶ τῆς δικαιοσύνης πᾶν εἶδος συμπεριέλαβεν ἀρετῆς· ταύτας αὐτῷ καὶ ἀντὶ περιβολαίου καὶ ἀντὶ ζώνης γεγενῆσθαί φησιν. Λύκῳ μὲν γὰρ ἀπεικάζει τὸ ἁρπακτικὸν ἦθος, προβάτῳ δὲ τὸ ἥμερόν τε καὶ πρᾶον καὶ αὖ πάλιν παρδάλει μὲν τὸ ποικί λον-κατάστικτον γὰρ τὸ ζῷον-, ἐρίφῳ δὲ τὸ ἁπλοῦν τε καὶ ἄκακον· οὕτω λέοντι μὲν τὸ ὑπερήφανον καὶ ἀρχικόν, ταύρῳ δὲ τὸ θρασύ, μοσχαρίῳ δὲ τὸ τούτων ἀπηλλαγμένον. Ἀλλ' ὅμως κατὰ ταὐτὸν αὐτὰ νεμηθήσεσθαι λέγει. Καὶ ὁρῶμεν τῆς προφητείας ἐν ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις τὸ τέλος καὶ βασιλέας καὶ ὑπάρχους καὶ στρατηγοὺς καὶ στρατιώτας καὶ ἀποχειροβιώτους οἰκέτας τε καὶ προσαίτας τῆς ἱερᾶς κατὰ ταὐτὸν κοινωνοῦντας τραπέζης, τῶν αὐτῶν ἐπαΐοντας λόγων, τῆς αὐτῆς κολυμβήθρας ἀξιουμένους. Καὶ παιδίον μικρὸν ἄξει αὐτούς. Τοὺς γὰρ ἐπὶ δυνάμει γαυριῶντας καὶ ἐπὶ σοφίᾳ βρενθυομένους ἄνθρωπος τῇ κακίᾳ κατὰ τὴν ἀποστολικὴν παραίνεσιν νηπιάζων καὶ τῇ ἁλιευτικῇ ἁπλότητι διακοσμούμενος ἄγει καὶ νέμει. 7Καὶ βοῦς καὶ ἄρκος ἅμα συνβοσκηθήσονται, καὶ ἅμα τὰ παιδία αὐτῶν ἔσονται, καὶ λέων ὡς βοῦς φάγεται ἄχυρα. Ὁρῶμεν δὲ καὶ τούτων τὸ τέλος· πολλοὶ γὰρ πλούτῳ περιρρεόμενοι καὶ ἀφθόνους ἔχοντες τρυφῆς ἀφορμὰς τὴν νηστείαν τῆς χλιδῆς προτιμῶσι καὶ
