in his book he wrote that through the same three names of one divinity all things came to be and he is all things. And concerning the miserable race of men the same Orpheus poetically set forth many verses, of which these are some. And beasts and birds and wandering tribes of mortals, beasts, birds, the consuming nations of men, burdens of the earth, fashioned images, knowing not how to perceive approaching evil; nor cunning to turn aside any kind of evil, nor, when good is present, to turn to it and do it, but in vain ignorant and improvident. And the same most wise Orpheus set forth many other verses concerning the human race. These things Timothy the chronographer wrote, saying that Orpheus so many years before said that a consubstantial trinity created all things. In these times Ilium was founded by Ilus; and 34 years after the founding of Ilium, Cyzicus was founded, metro 1.104 polis of the Hellespont and of Asia, by Cyzicus. And Tyre was also founded three hundred and fifty-one years before the temple in Jerusalem. In the times of the judges were also known Heracles the hero and the Argonauts with Jason the Thessalian, who, sailing up the Pontic sea, were suddenly warred against by Cyzicus the king of the Hellespont. and having engaged one another in a sea battle they killed Cyzicus, and took his city Cyzicus. But having learned that Cyzicus who was slain by them was their kinsman, they asked pardon for their ignorance, and propitiating the divine, they built a temple in Cyzicus itself, as we will say before, both concerning the oracle given to them from the Pythian hot springs and concerning other things. That Gideon did not set up the ephod to other gods, but to the true God. but since he acted contrary to the customary place and the law and it became a stumbling block to Israel, it happened that the destruction of his house came about. For this Gideon had 70 sons, consorting with many wives and concubines. and from one of these Abimelech was born to him, who slaughtered his remaining brothers on one stone, with only one, Jotham, escaping, and by flattery he deceived the people and reigned over them. And Jotham his brother, going up on one of the mountains, addressed the Shechemites about the good deeds of his father, telling them the parable concerning the olive tree and the fig tree and the vine and the bramble. 1.105 And according to this parable it happened to them; for a spirit of the lord disturbed those who had ruled them, and the sword of Abimelech was active against them, and their sword against him. And Abimelech was tyrant for three years, and he destroyed the cities of the Shechemites. And while still besieging one of the cities, approaching the wall, a woman from above struck him with a piece of a millstone, and crushed his skull. And after Abimelech, Tola arose, and he judged Israel for twenty-three years. and after him Jair the Gileadite for twenty-two years, who had thirty [two] sons. and after this one Israel sinned against the Lord, and served the carved images of the nations. and the king of Moab and Ammon and all the nations round about him humbled him for 18 years. Then he returned to God, and removed the foreign gods. And he raised up for them a judge, Jephthah the Gileadite, son of a prostitute woman, who was mighty in power, and he smote the king of Moab and his people mightily. This one fulfilled his own vow not piously upon his daughter. And he judged Israel for six years and died. Then Ibzan judged him for seven years and died. Then Elon the Zebulunite judged him for ten years and died. Then Abdon the Pirathonite judged him for eight years; who had forty sons, and thirty sons of his sons. Then the people whored after idols, and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years. then appeared
