Now therefore, having repented of your sins, come to him and be enlightened, as your father David says. For if you are sons of the prophets and disciples of Moses, do not dishonor the grace of your forefathers by paying attention to false speakers, but having wisely considered the things proclaimed beforehand by them, receive with your souls the Savior of your race. For this is he whom Moses also promised would be raised up as a prophet for you. 8.6.4 Having related these and such things to the people, he went away, adding as many again to the three thousand. Such then in speaking publicly, boldly on behalf of the initiation of the gospel, was zealous, fearless, wise, the courage of his own people and the cowardice of his opponents. 8.7.1 But since it was not only this that was a matter of great concern for the most excellent teacher of piety, to make the people of God numerous, but much more that the disciples live strictly according to the given laws, and he saw that Ananias, the thief of his own fruits and a strange temple-robber, about to instill a bad habit of sin in the Christians, he cut him off from the church abruptly; not being cruel and murderous in his judgment, but thus healing the sin with a view to benefit. 8.7.2 For since the people were newly converted and newly established, having recently received the evangelical laws out of Greek and Jewish indifference, he reasonably thought that the disciples needed not only admonition through words, but also some practical fear. For people are somehow accustomed, just as they are regulated at the beginning of their practices, so to keep the custom until their end. 8.7.3 And for this reason, having exposed the sin, he immediately brought death as the punishment, not using a sword, nor handing him over to executioners, but then showing in an extraordinary way the power of Christ in the manner of the slaying. For he only accused him, and the accused, falling down, expired. And how great this is, and how much reverence it produced in the church, we do not need to learn. 8.7.4 For two things were accomplished in one: that our Savior was believed to be God, and that the teacher of his laws had accompanying angels acting readily according to the will of the apostle. He wished to benefit the lame man and the grace was not slow; he desired to punish the temple-robber and the punishment came. 8.8.1 These things are sufficient to astound souls of stone and to persuade them firmly, that the words spoken by Peter were not of deceit; but God was with him and the mystery he was proclaiming was holy and true. And it is necessary to pay attention to this, that the sign for punishment and death was performed once by the apostle on account of the need, so that for those who choose evil he might provide the proof of the power of punishment; 8.8.2 but those of good deeds and healings he performed daily and continuously, and such an ease and grace of healing surrounded him, that none of the sick who came departed deceived of his hope, but went away to his house complete and healthy. And every place in Jerusalem where Peter appeared spoke of Christ; and he had a multitude of sick people following him and a daily extraordinary spectacle from a mixed populace, some gathering to be delivered from their troubling evils, and others to see those being healed. 8.8.3 Thus also that wonderful thing has been written about the apostle which was said of none of the others, that the relatives and the households of the sick brought them out on beds publicly, so that as Peter came by, even his shadow might overshadow one of them. This then is already greater even than the Lord's wonders, and the servant is praised above the Lord. And perhaps in this sign is fulfilled the prophecy which the Savior made to the disciples: Truly, truly I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do, and he will do greater things than these. 8.8.4 But when I say this,

νῦν γ' οὖν λαβόντες τῶν ἁμαρτηθέντων ὑμῖν μεταμέλειαν προσέλθετε πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ φωτίσθητε, καθὼς ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν λέγει ∆αβίδ. Εἰ γὰρ υἱοὶ τῶν προ φητῶν ἐστε καὶ μαθηταὶ τοῦ Μωϋσέως, μὴ ἀτιμάσητε τῶν προγόνων ὑμῶν τὴν χάριν ψευδολάλοις προσέχοντες, ἀλλὰ συνετῶς τὰ παρ' ἐκείνων προκηρυχθέντα σκοπήσαντες δέξασθε ταῖς ψυχαῖς τὸν Σωτῆρα τοῦ γένους ὑμῶν. Οὗτος γάρ ἐστι ὃν καὶ Μωϋσῆς ἐπηγγείλατο προφήτην ὑμῖν ἀναστήσεσθαι. 8.6.4 Ταῦτα καὶ τὰ τοιαῦτα πρὸς τὸν λαὸν διελθὼν ἀπῆλθεν, ἄλλους τοσούτους τοῖς τρισχιλίοις προσθείς. Τοιοῦτος μὲν οὖν ἐν τῷ δημοσίᾳ λαλεῖν θαρρούντως ὑπὲρ τῆς τοῦ εὐαγγελίου μυστα γωγίας πρόθυμος, ἀκατάπληκτος, συνετός, θάρσος τῶν ἰδίων καὶ τῶν ἐναντίων δειλία. 8.7.1 Ἐπειδὴ δὲ οὐ τοῦτο μόνον ἦν περισπούδαστον τῷ καλλίστῳ διδασκάλῳ τῆς εὐσεβείας, τὸ πολυάνθρωπον τὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ λαὸν ἀπεργάζεσθαι, ἀλλὰ πολλῷ πλέον τὸ ζῆν ἀκριβῶς τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐν τοῖς δοθεῖσι νόμοις, εἶδε δὲ τὸν Ἀνανίαν ἐκεῖνον, τὸν τῶν ἰδίων καρπῶν κλέπτην καὶ παράδοξον ἱερόσυλον μέλλοντα κακὴν ἐμποιεῖν τοῖς χρισ τιανοῖς ἁμαρτίας συνήθειαν, ἀποτόμως αὐτὸν τῆς ἐκκλησίας ἐξέκοψεν· οὐκ ὠμὸς ὢν καὶ φονικὸς τὴν γνώμην, ἀλλὰ κατὰ σκοπὸν ὠφελείας οὕτως ἰατρεύσας τὴν ἁμαρτίαν. 8.7.2 Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ νεοπροσήλυτος ἦν καὶ νεοπαγὴς ὁ λαός, ἐκ τῆς ἑλληνικῆς καὶ ἰουδαϊκῆς ἀδιαφορίας ὑπόγυον τοὺς εὐαγγελικοὺς δεξάμενος νόμους, εἰκότως ἐνόμισεν οὐ τῆς ἐκ λόγων νουθεσίας μόνον χρῄζειν τοὺς μαθητάς, ἀλλὰ καὶ φόβου τινὸς ἐμπράκτου εἰώθασι γάρ πως οἱ ἄνθρωποι, ὅπως ἂν ἐν ἀρχαῖς τῶν ἐπιτηδευμάτων κανονισθῶσιν, οὕτω μέχρι τέλους αὐτῶν τηρεῖν τὴν συνήθειαν· 8.7.3 καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἐλέγξας τὴν ἁμαρτίαν εὐθὺς θάνατον τὴν τιμωρίαν ἐπήγαγεν οὐ ξίφει χρησάμενος, οὐδὲ δημίοις αὐτὸν παραδούς, ἀλλὰ τότε διαφερόντως τὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ δύναμιν δείξας ἐν τῷ τρόπῳ τῆς ἀναιρέσεως. Ἐνεκάλεσε γὰρ μόνον καὶ ὁ ἐγκληθεὶς πεσὼν ἀπέψυξεν. Τοῦτο δὲ ἡλίκον ἐστὶ καὶ ὅσην τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ ἐνεποίησε τὴν εὐλάβειαν, οὐ χρῄζομεν μαθεῖν. 8.7.4 ∆ύο γὰρ ἐν ἑνὶ κατωρθώθη, τὸ καὶ τὸν Σωτῆρα ἡμῶν πιστευθῆναι εἶναι Θεὸν καὶ τὸ τὸν παιδευτὴν τῶν ἐκείνου νόμων παρεπομένους ἔχειν ἀγγέλους πρὸς τὴν βούλησιν τοῦ ἀποστόλου ἐνεργοῦντας ἑτοίμως. Ἠθέλησεν εὐεργετῆσαι τὸν χωλὸν καὶ οὐκ ἐβράδυνεν ἡ χάρις· ἐβουλήθη κολάσαι τὸν ἱερόσυλον καὶ παρεγένετο ἡ τιμωρία. 8.8.1 Ταῦτα ἱκανὰ λιθίνας καταπλῆξαι ψυχὰς καὶ πεῖσαι βεβαίως, ὡς οὐκ ἀπάτης ἦν τὰ ῥήματα τὰ παρὰ τοῦ Πέτρου λεγόμενα· ἀλλὰ Θεὸς ἦν μετ' αὐτοῦ καὶ ἅγιον ὑπῆρχε καὶ ἀληθὲς τὸ μυστήριον ὃ κατήγγελλε. Καὶ τοῦτο δὲ προσέχειν ἀναγκαῖον, ὅτι τὸ μὲν ἐπὶ τιμωρίᾳ καὶ φόνῳ σημεῖον ἅπαξ παρὰ τοῦ ἀποστόλου διὰ τὴν χρείαν γεγένηται, ἵνα τοῖς κακῶς προαιρουμένοις τῆς κολαστικῆς δυνάμεως παράσχηται τὴν ἀπό δειξιν· 8.8.2 τὰ δὲ τῶν εὐεργεσιῶν καὶ τῶν ἰάσεων καθ' ἡμέραν καὶ συνεχῶς ἐπετέλει, καὶ τοσαύτη τις αὐτῷ περιῆν τοῦ θεραπεύειν εὐκολία καὶ χάρις, ὥστε οὐδεὶς τῶν προσελθόντων ἀρρωστούντων ἀνέλυσε ψευσθεὶς τῆς ἐλπίδος, ἀλλ' ἄρτιος καὶ ὑγιὴς ἐπὶ τὴν οἰκίαν ἀπῄει. Καὶ πᾶς τόπος τῆς Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἔνθα Πέτρος ἐφαίνετο τὸν Χριστὸν ἐλάλει· καὶ τὸ πλῆθος ἔσχεν ἀκολουθούντων ἀρρώστων καὶ θέατρον καθ' ἡμέραν παράδοξον ἐκ δήμου συμμίκτου, τῶν μὲν συναγομένων ἵνα τῶν ὀχλούντων κακῶν ἀπαλλαγῶσι, τῶν δὲ ἵνα τοὺς θεραπευομένους θεάσωνται. 8.8.3 Οὕτω τοι κἀκεῖνο περὶ τοῦ ἀποστόλου τὸ θαυμαστὸν ἀναγέγραπται ὃ ἐπ' οὐδενὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἐλέχθη, ὅτι οἱ συγγενεῖς καὶ οἱ τῶν ἀσθενούντων οἰκεῖοι ἔφερον αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ κλίνων δημοσίᾳ, ἵνα ἐρχομένου Πέτρου κἂν ἡ σκιὰ ἐπισκιάσῃ τινὶ αὐτῶν. Τοῦτο μὲν οὖν ἤδη μεῖζον καὶ τῶν δεσποτικῶν θαυμασίων καὶ ὁ δοῦλος εὐφημεῖται ὑπὲρ τὸν Κύριον. Καὶ τάχα ἐν τούτῳ τῷ σημείῳ συμπληροῦται ἡ προφητεία, ἣν ὁ Σωτὴρ πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐποιήσατο· Ἀμήν, ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν· Ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ τὰ ἔργα ἃ ἐγὼ ποιῶ, κἀκεῖνος ποιήσει καὶ μείζονα τούτων ποιήσει. 8.8.4 Τοῦτο δὲ ὅταν λέγω,
