and not having leisure for himself, how can he provide the necessary food? Is it not reasonable for all of you to make provision for his living, not waiting for him to ask you? For that is the mark of a beggar; rather he would die of hunger than endure to do this. How then will you not suffer punishment, not considering that “the laborer is worthy of his wages”? And let no one say: So then, is the word which was provided freely being sold? May it not be so. For if someone who has the means to live should take, this one sells the word; but if one who does not have the means receives nourishment for the sake of living, as the Lord also received at suppers and from friends, having nothing, He who in turn has all things, he does not sin. Accordingly, therefore, honor presbyters, catechists, useful deacons, widows who have lived well, orphans as children of the church; but also whenever there should be a need of some resource for something necessary, all contribute together. Be pious toward one another, not hesitating to endure anything whatsoever for your own salvation. And having said these things, he laid his hand on Zacchaeus, saying: Master and Lord of all, the Father and God, you protect the shepherd with the flock. You are the occasion, you are the power. We are the one helped, “you are the helper,” “the physician,” “the savior,” “the wall,” the life, “the hope,” “the refuge,” the joy, the expectation, the rest, (to speak concisely) you are all things to us. Work together with us for the eternal existence of salvation, rescue, protect. You are able to do all things. For you are ruler of rulers and lord of lords, master of kings. You give authority to the one presiding to loose what must be loosed and to bind what must be bound, you make him wise; you, as through an instrument, through him protect the church of your Christ as a beautiful bride. For yours is the eternal glory, the hymn of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit for all the ages. Amen. And having said these things, after this he said: As many of you as wish to be baptized, begin to fast from tomorrow and each day be instructed and inquire about what you wish. For I wish to remain with you for ten more days. And after three days, beginning to baptize, he called me and Aquila and Nicetas and said: As I am about to set out for Tyre after seven days, I want you, having departed from here and secretly been lodged with Bernice the Canaanite, the daughter of Justa, to learn accurately from her the things concerning Simon and write to me. For it helps me much, that I may prepare myself for him. Therefore, depart from here in peace. And so leaving him baptizing, as he commanded, we went ahead of him to Tyre of Phoenicia.
