An angel of the Lord 1.106 to the barren wife of Manoah, and he promises to her the conception of Samson. And when Samson had grown to manhood, he set his heart in desire for a foreign woman. But Manoah and his mother forbade him, not knowing that this had happened to him by the will of God for the destruction of the foreigners. And Samson, having been mocked by his wife concerning the riddle which he had posed, "Out of the eater came something to eat, and out of the strong came something sweet," he departed from her when she said, "What is stronger than a lion, and what is sweeter than honey?" And her father gave her to another man. And because of this Samson was all the more enraged at the foreigners, and he set fire to their lands by means of the thousand foxes. And the foreigners burned down Samson's wife and her parents, and their whole house they destroyed with fire, because through them such things had happened to them. Then there happened to him the things concerning the woman who was in the city of the foreigners, when also he carried the gates of the city up on his shoulders to the mountain. And likewise also the things concerning Delilah. And he judges the people for twenty years. And after he had been shaved by the foreigners and blinded, when his hair had grown again, he shook down the city of the foreigners, overturning it, in which he also died with them, killing more foreigners then than while he was still alive. And after him, Micah from the tribe of Ephraim gave the 130 shekels of silver to his mother. And she consecrated the silver to the Lord, and made a carved 1.107 and a molten image, and it was placed in the house of Micah, and the house of Micah was as a house of God. And he also made an ephod and seraphim, and he called a Levite to be a priest, and he was acting in the name of God according to his command; for there was no king in Israel at that time, but each one did what was pleasing in his own eyes. Now the ephod and the seraphim are a garment and images. And it is said that there were made by Micah a shoulder-garment and a face, a priestly garment and idols. Around this time the events concerning the Levite and his concubine happened, and how the tribe of Benjamin was wiped out. And after Samson, Samaneh led the people for one year. In these times of the priesthood, the people had peace with the foreigners for 30 years. And after this, Eli the priest ruled the people for 20 years. And when a famine occurred, many of the Hebrews became migrants; among them also Elimelech from the tribe of Judah and Naomi his wife and their two sons. And they went down to the cities of Moab, and they took for their sons Moabite women, foreigners. And Elimelech and his two sons died there, and Naomi was left with her daughters-in-law. And when the Lord lifted the famine from Israel, Naomi went up to her tribe, and Ruth her daughter-in-law did not leave her; and by the cooperation of God and the counsel of Naomi Ruth is joined to Boaz as being next of kin to Elimelech. from whom he had a son, Obed, whose son was Jesse the father of David. And Boaz is descended from Judah and Tamar 1.108 the foreigner, from whom came Perez and so on, as the genealogy relates. That in the year of Samson * Eli was established as the seventh high priest, who also judged Israel for another 40 years, having become fifty years old. And in the fourth year of Eli's priesthood the prophet Samuel was born, and in the eighth year he was given to the temple, and in the 38th year he began to judge Israel, and in the 70th he died, having served as priest for 35 years. And these things are from the book of Judges, which we have noted in passing, in summary. And it seemed good to me also to arrange in summary the more necessary subjects of both the Kingdoms and the Chronicles for the remembrance of those who encounter this book. Elkanah and Hannah and Peninnah his wives were going up to Shiloh to sacrifice to the Lord. And Hannah had no child. And Hannah asked the Lord with anguish that her womb be opened and that which was born be given to him. And she bore Samuel, and brought him to the tabernacle of God. And again Eli prayed for her that children be given to her in place of Samuel, and she bore
