if he does not acquire it, he will be in no worse a state than those who have acquired it. But if he is wicked, even if you leave him ten thousand things, you have not left him a guardian, but have made him worse than those driven to extreme poverty. For to children who have not been well-regulated, poverty is better than wealth. For the one keeps them in virtue even against their will; but the other does not even permit those who are willing to be sober-minded, but leads them out and destroys them, and casts them into countless terrible things. Mothers, take charge of your daughters especially; this guardianship is easy for you; see to it that they are keepers at home; but before all things, teach them to be pious, 62.548 orderly, to despise money, to remain unadorned. In this way give them in marriage. If we form them in this way, you will save not only them, but also the husband who is to take her; not the husband, but also the children; not the children, but also the grandchildren. For if the root is good, the branches will extend for the better, and for all these things you will receive your reward. As therefore benefiting not one soul, but many through one, let us so do all things. For so ought she to go forth from her father's house to her marriage, as an athlete from the wrestling school, possessing all knowledge with exactness, as leaven that ought to transform the whole lump to its own beauty. And let the boys again be so modest, as to be distinguished more by their orderliness and temperance, that they may have great praise both from men and from God. Let them learn to control their belly, to abstain from luxury, to be good managers, affectionate, let them learn to be ruled. For thus they will be able to procure a great reward for their parents; thus all things will be for the glory of God and for our salvation, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
HOMILY X. If any one desires the office of a bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach, not given to wine, not a striker, not greedy of filthy lucre, but patient, not a brawler, not covetous, one that rules well his own house, having children
in subjection with all gravity. 1. About to enter upon the discourse concerning the episcopate, he shows once for all what manner of man a bishop ought to be, not putting this in the order of an exhortation to Timothy, but as discoursing to all, and through him regulating all; and what does he say? "If any one desires the office of a bishop," "I do not find fault," he says; for it is a work of superintendence. If any one has this desire, so as not to long for the rule and authority only, but for the superintendence, I do not find fault. "For he desires a good work," he says. Since Moses also desired the thing, but not the power, and so desired it, as to hear, "Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?" If anyone has so desired, let him desire it; for it is called "episcopate," from overseeing all. "A bishop then," he says, "must be blameless, the husband of one wife." He says this not as laying down a law, as if it were not permitted to be one without this, but as checking incontinence; since among the Jews it was permitted both to enter into second marriages, and to have two wives at the same time. "For marriage is honorable." But some say that this was said, that he should be the husband of one wife. "Blameless." He has spoken of all virtue, in saying "blameless." So that if anyone is conscious to himself of any sins, not well
