where your Master descended, and you will no longer admire yourself nor praise yourself, but you will also laugh at yourself, as one who has done nothing. You are humble, and more humble than all men; do not be proud on account of this, nor reproach others, and you will lose your boast. You are humble for this reason, that you may be freed from arrogance; if, therefore, through it you fall into arrogance, it is better not to be humble. If anyone should say it is better to be exalted while succeeding than to be humbled after falling, he is very ignorant of the harm of arrogance and of the profit of humility. For know well and clearly, that a man succeeding with arrogance, if indeed this is succeeding at all, will quickly fall into the uttermost destruction. And he who was permitted to slip, and learned moderation from his fall, will both rise again and recover himself more quickly, if indeed he wishes; but he who thinks he is doing well with arrogance, and suffers nothing terrible, will never have a sense of his own lawlessness, but will even increase the evil, and will depart from here empty, without realizing it. And why is it, he says, that those who walked uprightly before the temptations, often fell after the temptations? Who then knows well those who walk uprightly, except He who fashioned our hearts individually, and who understands all our works? For often many of those who seem to us to be good, are more wicked than all. But leaving such men aside, let us come in our discourse to those who truly live uprightly; who knows if they have succeeded in other things, but the chief of goods, humility, has been neglected? And for this reason God has left them, so that they may learn, that not by their own power 63.619 did they accomplish those things, but by the grace of God. For it is called meekness, not when someone, being wronged by those in power, bears it gently, but when, being mistreated even by those considered to be inferiors, he gives way. For see the loving-kindness of God, and what sort of care he shows to his own servants. For when Isaac was unjustly driven away from his own labors by the king of Gerar and the local people, he was not angry, nor did he show a faint heart, nor did he cry out to himself, nor did he say, Am I not master even to enjoy the wells? have I become bereft of the influence from above? have I been deprived of the providence from the Master? He did not think any such thing, he did not reason, but with meekness he bore all things. For this reason he both enjoyed greater honor and the alliance from above. For the Lord appeared to him in that night, and said: I am the God of Abraham your father; fear not, for I am with you and I will bless you. For wishing to recover the righteous man and prepare him to be of good courage, he appears to him, and says: I am the God who made your father glorious, and established him in so great renown, and being a stranger, made him more illustrious than the locals; I am he, who prepared him to be so increased. Fear not, therefore, for I am with you, and I will multiply your seed for the sake of Abraham your father; for I owe him many rewards for his obedience to me. Having heard these things, the righteous man is henceforth in security; for he who said, I am with you, and, I will bless you and I will multiply your seed; this one also bestowed renown. See how great is the strength of humility; for those who formerly drove him away, now having come to the righteous man, not only apologize for what has already happened and ask for pardon, but also proclaim him. For who could be stronger than this one, who has God with him? For seeing, they say, we have seen that the Lord is with you. But let us see how his son Jacob also makes his journey, being persecuted; for from this too we shall reap no small benefit. For journeying to Haran, the sun set, and he took one of the stones of the place, and put it at his head, and he slept. Ταπεινὸς εἶ, καὶ πάντων ἀνθρώπων ταπεινότερος, μὴ διὰ τοῦτο μέγα φρόνει, μηδὲ ἑτέροις ὀνείδιζε, καὶ ἀπολέσεις τὸ καύχημα. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ταπεινοφρονεῖς, ἵνα ἀπονοίας ἀπαλλαγῇς· ἂν τοίνυν δι' αὐτῆς εἰς ἀπόνοιαν ἐμπέσῃς, κρεῖττον μὴ ταπεινοφρονεῖν. Εἰ δέ τις λέγοι βέλτιον εἶναι κατορθοῦντας ἐπαίρεσθαι, ἢ ταπεινωθῆναι πεσόντας, πολὺ καὶ τῆς ἀλαζονείας ἀγνοεῖ τὴν ζημίαν, καὶ τῆς ταπεινοφροσύνης τὸ κέρδος. Εὖ γὰρ ἴσθι σαφῶς, ὅτι ἄνθρωπος μετὰ ἀπονοίας κατορθῶν, εἴ γε ὅλως τοῦτό ἐστι κατορθοῦν, ταχέως ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς τὴν ἐσχάτην ἀπώλειαν. Καὶ ὁ μὲν ὀλισθῆσαι συγχωρηθεὶς, καὶ μετριάζειν μαθὼν ἀπὸ τοῦ πτώματος, καὶ ἀναστήσεται καὶ ἀνακτήσεται ἑαυτὸν θᾶττον, εἴ γε βούλοιτο· ὁ δὲ δοκῶν μὲν εὖ πράττειν μετὰ ἀλαζονείας, μηδὲν δὲ πάσχων δεινὸν, οὔτε αἴσθησιν τῆς οἰκείας παρανομίας λήψεταί ποτε, ἀλλὰ καὶ αὐξήσει τὸ δεινὸν, καὶ λήσεται τῶν ἐνθένδε κενὸς ἀπερχόμενος. Καὶ τί δήποτε, φησὶν, οἱ τὰ ὀρθὰ βαδίζοντες πρὸ τῶν πειρασμῶν, μετὰ τοὺς πειρασμοὺς πολλάκις κατέπεσον; Τίς οὖν ὁ καλῶς τοὺς τὰ ὀρθὰ βαδίζοντας ἐπιστάμενος, πλὴν τοῦ πλάσαντος καταμόνας τὰς καρδίας ἡμῶν, καὶ συνιέντος εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔργα ἡμῶν; Πολλοὶ γὰρ πολλάκις τῶν δοκούντων ἡμῖν εἶναι χρηστῶν, πάντων εἰσὶ πονηρότεροι. Ἵνα δὲ τοὺς τοιούτους ἀφέντες, ἐπὶ τοὺς ὄντως βιοῦντας ὀρθῶς ἔλθωμεν τῷ λόγῳ, τίς οἶδεν εἰ τὰ μὲν ἄλλα αὐτοῖς κατώρθωται, τὸ δὲ κεφάλαιον ἠμέληται τῶν ἀγαθῶν, ἡ ταπεινοφροσύνη; Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο αὐτοὺς ἀφῆκεν ὁ Θεὸς, ἵνα μάθωσιν, ὅτι οὐ τῇ οἰκείᾳ δυνάμει 63.619 κατώρθουν ἐκεῖνα, ἀλλὰ τῇ χάριτι τοῦ Θεοῦ. Ἐπιείκεια γὰρ λέγεται, οὐχ ὅταν τις παρὰ τῶν ἐν δυναστείᾳ ἀδικούμενος φέρῃ πράως, ἀλλ' ὅταν καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν νομιζομένων ὑποδεεστέρων εἶναι ἐπηρεαζόμενος παραχωρῇ. Ὅρα γὰρ τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ φιλανθρωπίαν, καὶ οἵαν εἰς τοὺς οἰκείους αὐτοῦ δούλους ἐπιδείκνυται θεραπείαν. Ἡνίκα γὰρ Ἰσαὰκ παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως Γεράρων καὶ τῶν ἐγχωρίων ἀδίκως ἀπηλαύνετο τῶν ἰδίων πόνων, οὐκ ἐδυσχέραινεν, οὐδὲ μικρόψυχον ἐπεδείξατο, οὐδὲ ἀνεβόησε πρὸς ἑαυτὸν, οὐδὲ εἶπεν, ὅτι Οὐδὲ ἀπολαύειν φρεάτων εἰμὶ κύριος; ἆρα μὴ ἔρημος γέγονα τῆς ἄνωθεν ῥοπῆς; ἆρα μὴ τῆς προνοίας ἀπεστέρημαι τῆς παρὰ τοῦ ∆εσπότου; Οὐδὲν τοιοῦτον οὐκ ἐνενόησεν, οὐκ ἐλογίσατο, ἀλλὰ μετ' ἐπιεικείας πάντα ἔφερε. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ πλείονος ἀπέλαυσε τῆς τιμῆς, καὶ τῆς ἄνωθεν συμμαχίας. Ὤφθη γὰρ αὐτῷ Κύριος ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ἐκείνῃ, καὶ εἶπεν· Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ Θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ τοῦ πατρός σου· μὴ φοβοῦ, μετὰ σοῦ γάρ εἰμι καὶ εὐλογήσω σε. Θέλων γὰρ τὸν δίκαιον ἀνακτήσασθαι καὶ θαῤῥεῖν παρασκευάσαι, ἐπιφαίνεται αὐτῷ, καί φησιν· Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ Θεὸς ὁ τὸν πατέρα τὸν σὸν ἐπίδοξον ποιήσας, καὶ ἐν τοσαύτῃ περιφανείᾳ καταστήσας, καὶ ξένον ὄντα τῶν ἐγχωρίων λαμπρότερον ἀπεργασάμενος· ἐγώ εἰμι ἐκεῖνος, ὁ ἐκεῖνον οὕτως αὐξηθῆναι παρασκευάσας. Μὴ τοίνυν φοβοῦ, μετὰ σοῦ γάρ εἰμι, καὶ πληθυνῶ τὸ σπέρμα σου δι' Ἀβραὰμ τὸν πατέρα σου· πολλὰς γὰρ ὀφείλω τὰς ἀμοιβὰς ἐκείνῳ τῆς εἰς ἐμὲ ὑπακοῆς. Ταῦτα ἀκούσας ὁ δίκαιος, ἐν ἀδείᾳ λοιπὸν γίνεται· ὁ γὰρ εἰπὼν, Μετὰ σοῦ εἰμι, καὶ, Εὐλογήσω σε καὶ πληθυνῶ τὸ σπέρμα σου· οὗτος καὶ τὴν περιφάνειαν ἐχαρίσατο. Ὅρα πόση τῆς ταπεινώσεως ἡ ἰσχύς· οἱ γὰρ πρῴην ἐλάσαντες, νῦν παραγενόμενοι πρὸς τὸν δίκαιον, οὐ μόνον ἀπολογοῦνται ὑπὲρ τῶν ἤδη γεγενημένων καὶ συγγνώμην αἰτοῦσιν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀνακηρύττουσι. Τίς γὰρ ἂν εἴη τούτου ἰσχυρότερος, τοῦ μεθ' ἑαυτοῦ τὸν Θεὸν ἔχοντος; Ἰδόντες γὰρ, φασὶν, ἑωράκαμεν ὅτι Κύριος μετὰ σοῦ. Ἴδωμεν δὲ πῶς καὶ ὁ τούτου υἱὸς Ἰακὼβ τὴν ἀποδημίαν ποιεῖται διωκόμενος· οὐ μικρὰν γὰρ κἀντεῦθεν καρπωσόμεθα τὴν ὠφέλειαν. Πορευόμενος γὰρ εἰς Χαῤῥὰν, ἔδυ ὁ ἥλιος, καὶ ἔλαβεν ἀπὸ τῶν λίθων τοῦ τόπου, καὶ ἔθηκε πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκοιμήθη. Εἶδες ἄφατον φιλοσοφίαν; εἶδες πῶς οἱ παλαιοὶ τὰς ὁδοιπορίας ἐποιοῦντο; Ἀνὴρ ἐν οἰκίᾳ τραφεὶς, πολλῆς ἀπολαύσας θεραπείας, λαβὼν λίθον,
