he says, do not depart from the law? This the law desires; this it foretold from the beginning. But if you examine why it has now been revealed, you are not doing a safe thing, prying into the mysteries of God, and demanding an account. Therefore he added, for obedience to the faith. For faith requires obedience only, not meddlesomeness. And when God commands, one must obey, not pry. "made known to all nations. To the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." For it is not you alone, he says, but the whole world so believes, taking not a man, but God as teacher. Therefore he added, through Jesus Christ. It was not only made known, but also confirmed. Both are his works. Therefore it should also be read this way: Now to him that is of power to stablish you through Jesus Christ. For he ascribes both to him, and not only both, but also the glory that is to the Father. Therefore he said, To whom be glory for 95.569 ever. Amen. And again he gives glory, being astonished at the incomprehensibility of the mysteries. For not even now when it has appeared is it possible to comprehend it by reasonings, but it must be known through faith; for otherwise it is not possible; and it is well to say, To the only wise God. For when you consider how he brought in the Gentiles, and mingled them with those who had long been righteous, and saved the despaired of, and brought those unworthy of the earth up to heaven, and led those who had fallen from the present life into that immortal and ineffable life, and made those who were trodden down by demons rivals of angels, and opened paradise, and resolved all the ancient evils; and this in a short time, and by a short and most direct way, then you will know wisdom; and when you see what neither angels nor archangels knew, suddenly learned by those from the Gentiles through Jesus Christ. TO THE FIRST EPISTLE TO THE CORINTHIANS. HYPOTHESIS. The Apostle, having heard that much discord had arisen among the Corinthians,
since certain false apostles had made schisms among them, writes the epistle correcting everything. And these were their sins. First, that many factions had arisen among them; and that they attached themselves to some as wealthy, and to others as wise and able to teach them something more. Second, that they were cohabiting with their stepmothers, and were arrogant about this. And after this, concerning gluttony; for they were so overcome by this matter, as even to partake of things sacrificed to idols. Others again, having fights and contentions about money, entrusted themselves to the outside courts. There was also another transgression among them, eating by themselves in the churches, and not sharing with those in need. Along with these, they also erred in another matter, being greatly puffed up about the spiritual gifts, and falling away from this. For they were also prone to look at one another with jealousy, and they were dividing the Church; and their doctrine concerning the resurrection was also lame. These things became the subject of the epistle for him, and others which it is not possible to mention in detail.
CHAPTER I. "Paul, a called apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and
Sosthenes our brother, to the Church of God which is at Corinth; to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours." 95.572 Since they were cut up into many factions, and some were named after this man, and others after that, and this
