our, and his previous opinion will remain completely unblemished by any blame. Then shaking their heads, they fell silent, having said only this: All things are difficult and impassable.
When these and various other things had been spoken, having been venerated and having venerated, they withdrew with all cheerfulness. And again on another Sabbath, they brought them up into the palace; and they brought in first the disciple of the elder, when the two patriarchs had also come together; and they brought Constantine and Menas as accusers of the elder, and demanding that the disciple agree to what was being said against them. And with all boldness the disciple said fearlessly to the senate: You bring Constantine into a secret chamber of the palace? This man is neither a presbyter, nor a monk, but a stage performer. It became known to the Africans and the Romans what kind of women he came there tending. All learned of his crafty schemes, which he contrived in order to escape notice; at one time saying that they are his sisters; at another, that because of not being in communion with the Church of Constantinople I have taken them, so that they might not be defiled by heretical communion. But again, if he lacks extravagance, and finds a place that does not know him, he does the same things, for the sake of shameful gain and sordid pleasure. And it is a great shame even to meet with him, for those wishing to live reverently. Then after these things, having been asked if he had anathematized the Typos, he said fearlessly: Not only did I anathematize it, but I also wrote a libel. What then? Do you not confess to having done wrongly? the magistrates say to him. And he says: May God not grant that what I have done well according to ecclesiastical rule, I should say (128) to have been done wrongly. And having been asked many other things, and having answered as God granted him, he is led out of the secret chamber.
13. And they bring in the elder, and lord Troilus says to him: Speak, Abba,
see, speak the truth, and the master will have mercy on you; since if we proceed by way of a legal inquiry, and he finds even one of the things of which you have been accused to be true, the law puts you to death. And he said: I have already said, and I say again, that if only one is said to be true, then Satan is God. But if he is not God, but an apostate, then the things of which I have been accused are false and without substance. Nevertheless, whatever you command to be done, do it. Worshipping God, I am not wronged. And he says to him: Did you not anathematize the Typos? He answered: I have often said that I did anathematize it. He says to him, you anathematized the Typos? you have anathematized the emperor. The servant of God answered: I did not anathematize the emperor, but a document foreign to the orthodox and ecclesiastical faith. And he says to him: Where was it anathematized? By the synod of Rome, he answered, in the church of the Savior, and in that of the Theotokos. Then the prefect says to him: Do you commune with the Church here, or do you not commune? He answered and said: I do not commune. He says to him: Why? He answered: Because she cast out the councils. And he said: If she cast out the councils, how are they mentioned in the diptychs? And he says: And what is the benefit of names, when the doctrines have been cast out? And can you, he said, show this? And he said: If I receive permission, and you command, I can show this very easily. And when they fell silent, the sacellarius says to him: Why do you love the Romans, and hate the Greeks? The servant of God, answering, said: We have a commandment to hate no one. I love the Romans, as being of the same faith; and the Greeks, as being of the same language. And again the sacellarius says to him: How many years do you say you are? He answered: Seventy-five. And he says to him: How many years has your disciple been with you? He answered: Thirty-seven. Then a certain cleric cried out: The Lord has rendered to you what you did to the blessed Pyrrhus. To whom he answered nothing at all.

ἡμῶν, καί μενεῖ παντελῶς ἄχραντος πάσης μέμψεως ἡ πρόληψις αὐτοῦ. Τότε σείσαντες τάς κεφαλάς, ἐσιώπησαν, τοῦτο μονον εἰρηκότες· Ὅλα δυσχερῆ καί ἀνέκβατα.
Τούτων καί ἑτέρων διαφόρων λαληθέντων, προσκυνηθέντες καί προσκυνήσαντες, μετά πάσης ἱλαρότητος ἀνεχώρησαν. Καί πάλιν τῷ ἄλλῳ Σαββάτῳ, ἀνήγαγον αὐτούς ἐν τῷ παλατίῳ· καί εἰσφέρουσι πρῶτον τόν μαθητήν τοῦ γέροντος, συνελθόντων καί τῶν δύο πατριαρχῶν· καί ἄγουσι Κωνσταντῖνον καί Μηνᾶν κατηγόρους τοῦ γέροντος, καί ἀπαιτοῦντες τήν μαθητήν συγκαταθέσθαι τοῖς κατ' αὐτῶν λαλουμένοις. Μετά δέ πάσης παῤῥησίας εἶπεν ὁ μαθητής ἀφόβως πρός τήν σύγκλητον· Κωνσταντῖνον εἰσάγετε ἐν σεκρέτῳ παλατίου; Οὗτος οὐκ ἔστιν οὔτε πρεσβύτερος, οὔτε μοναχός, ἀλλά τριβοῦνος θυμέλης. Ἐγνωρίσθη Ἀφροῖς καίῬωμαίοις, ποῖα γύναια βόσκων ἦλθεν ἐκεῖσε. Πάντες ἔμαθον τάς πανουργίας αὐτοῦ, ἅς ἐποίησε πρός τό λαθεῖν· ποτέ μέν λέγων, ὅτι ἀδελφαί αὐτοῦ εἰσί· ποτέ δέ, ὅτι διά τό μή κοινωνῆσαι τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ Κωνσταντινουπόλεως ἐπῆρα αὐτάς, ἵνα μή χρανθῶσι τῇ αἱρετικῇ κοινωνίᾳ. Ἀλλά καί πάλιν ἐάν λείψῃ αὐτῷ σπατάλῃ, καί εὕρῃ χώραν μή γνωρίζουσαν αὐτόν, τά αὐτά ποιεῖ, αἰσχροῦ κέρδους χάριν, καί ῥυπαρᾶς ἡδονῆς. Καί μεγάλη αἰσχύνη ἐστί, τό κἄν συντυγχάνειν αὐτῷ, τοῖς σεμνῶς βιῶναι θέλουσιν. Εἶτα μετά ταῦτα, ἐρωτηθείς εἰ τόν τύπον ἐνεθεμάτισεν, ἀφόβως εἶπεν· Οὐ μόνον ἀνεθεμάτισα, ἀλλά καί λίβελλον ἐποίησα. Τί οὖν; οὐχ ὁμολογεῖς πεποιηκέναι κακῶς; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄρχοντες. Καί λέγει· Μή δῷ ὁ Θεός, ἵνα ὅπερ ἐποίησα καλῶς κατά θεσμόν ἐκκλησιαστικόν, εἴπω (128) γενέσθαι κακῶς. Καί πολλά ἄλλα ἐρωτηθείς, καί ἀποκριθείς καθώς ὁ Θεός ἐχορήγησεν αὐτῷ, ἐξάγεται τοῦ σεκρέτου.
ΙΓ´. Καί εἰσάγουσι τόν γέροντα, καί λέγει πρός αὐτόν κῦρις Τρώϊλος· Εἰπέ, ἀββᾶ,
βλέπε, εἰπέ τήν ἀλήθειαν, καί ἐλεεῖ σε ὁ δεσπότης· ἐπεί ἐάν διά τῆς νομίμου διηγήσεως ἔλθωμεν, καί εὕρῃ κἄν ἕν τῶν κατηγορηθέντων σου ἀληθές, ὁ νόμος φονεύει σε. Καί εἶπε· καί ἤδη εἶπον, καί πάλιν λέγω, ὅτι ἐάν μόνον ἕν λέγηται εἶναι ἀληθές, καί ὁ Σατανᾶς Θεός ἐστιν. Εἰ δέ οὐκ ἔστι Θεός, ἀλλ' ἀποστάτης, καί τά κατηγορηθέντα μου ψευδῆ καί ἀνυπόστατα. Πλήν εἴ τι κελεύετε ποιῆσαι, ποιήσατε. Θεόν σέβων, οὐκ ἀδικοῦμαι. Καί λέγει αὐτῷ· Οὔκ ἀνεθεμάτισας τόν τύπον; Ἀπεκρίθη· Πολλάκις εἶπον ὅτι ἀνεθεμάτισα. Λέγει αὐτῷ τόν τύπον ἀνεθεμάτισας; τόν βασιλέα ἀνεθεμάτισας. Ἀπεκρίθη ὁ δοῦλος τοῦ Θεοῦ· Ἐγώ βασιλέα οὐκ ἀνεθεμάτισα, ἀλλά χάρτην ἀλλότριον τῆς ὀρθοδόξου καί ἐκκλησιαστικῆς πίστεως. Καί λέγει αὐτῷ· Ποῦ ἀνεθεματίσθη; Ὑπό τῆς συνόδουῬώμης, ἀπεκρίθη, εἰς τήν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Σωτῆρος, καί εἰς τήν Θεοτόκον. Τότε λέγει πρός αὐτόν ὁ ἔπαρχος· Κοινωνεῖς τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ τῶν ὧδε, ἤ οὐ κοινωνεῖς; Ἀπεκρίθη, καί εἶπεν· Οὐ κοινωνῶ. Λέγει αὐτῷ· ∆ιά τί; Ἀπεκρίθη· Ὅτι ἔξω ἔβαλε τάς συνόδους. Καί εἶπεν· Ἐάν ἔξω ἔβαλε τάς συνόδους, πῶς εἰς τά δίπτυχα ἀναφέρονται; Καί λέγει· Καί τίς ὄνησις ὀνομάτων, τῶν δογμάτων ἐκβεβλημένων; Καί δύνασαι, ἔφη, τοῦτο δεῖξαι; Καί εἶπεν· Ἐάν λάβω ἄδειαν, καί κελεύετε, δειχθῆναι ἔχω τοῦτο πάνυ εὐχερῶς. Καί σιωπησάντων αὐτῶν, λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ σακελλάριος· ∆ιατί ἀγαπᾷς τούςῬωμαίους, καί τούς Γραικούς μισεῖς. Ἀποκριθείς ὁ τοῦ Θεοῦ δοῦλος, εἶπε· Παραγγελίαν ἔχομεν, τοῦ μή μισῆσαί τινα. Ἀγαπῶ τούςῬωμαίους, ὡς ὁμόπιστους· τούς δέ Γραικούς, ὡς ὁμογλώσσους. Καί πάλιν λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ σακελλάριος· Πόσων ἐτῶν λέγεις ἑαυτόν· Ἀπεκρίθη; Ἑβδομήκοντα πέντε. Καί λέγει αὐτῷ· Πόσους χρόνους ἔχει μετά σοῦ ὁ μαθητής σου; Ἀπεκρίθη· Τριάκοντα ἑπτά. Τότε ἀνέκραξε εἷς κληρικός· Ἀπέδωκέ σοι ὁ Κύριος, ὅσα ἐποίησας τῷ μακαρίῳ Πύῤῥῳ. Πρός ὅν οὐδέν ἀπεκρίθη ὅλως.
