IV. For what if some are neither widows nor widowers, but stand in need of assistance, either through poverty or some disease, or the maintenance of a great number of children? It is thy duty to oversee all people, and to take care of them all. For they that give gifts do not of their own head give them to the widows, but barely bring them in, calling them free-will offerings, that so thou that knowest those that are in affliction mayest as a good steward give them their portion of the gift. For God knows the giver, though thou distributest it to those in want when he is absent. And he has the reward of well-doing, but thou the blessedness of having dispensed it with a good conscience. But do thou tell them who was the giver, that they may pray for him by name. For it is our duty to do good to all men, not fondly preferring one or another, whoever they be. For the Lord says: “Give to every one that asketh of thee.” 8 Luke vi. 30 It is evident that it is meant of every one that is really in want, whether he be friend or foe, whether he be a kinsman or a stranger, whether he be single or married. For in all the Scripture the Lord gives us exhortations about the needy, saying first by Isaiah: “Deal thy bread to the hungry, and bring the poor which have no covering into thine house. If thou seest the naked, do thou cover him; and thou shalt not overlook those which are of thine own family and seed.” 9 Isa. lviii. 7 And then by Daniel He says to the potentate: “Wherefore, O king, let my counsel please thee, and purge thy sins by acts of mercy, and thine iniquities by bowels of compassion to the needy.” 10 Dan. iv. 27 And He says by Solomon: “By acts of mercy and of faith iniquities are purged.” 11 Prov. xvi. 6 And He says again by David: “Blessed is he that has regard to the poor and needy; the Lord shall deliver him in the evil day.” 12 Ps. xli. 1 And again: “He hath dispersed abroad, he hath given to the needy, his righteousness remaineth for ever.” 13 Ps. cxii. 9. And Solomon says: “He that hath mercy on the poor lendeth to the Lord; 14 Instead of “Lord,” one V. ms. reads “God.” according to his gift it shall be repaid him again.” 15 Prov. xix. 17. And afterwards: “He that stoppeth his ear, that he may not hear him that is in want, he also shall call himself, and there shall be none to hear him.” 16 Prov. xxi. 13.
[4] Τί γὰρ εἴ τινες μή εἰσιν χῆραι ἢ χῆροι, βοηθείας δὲ χρῄζουσιν διὰ πενίαν ἢ διὰ νόσον ἢ διὰ τεκνοτροφίαν; Πάντας σε δεῖ ἐφορᾶν καὶ πάντων ἐπιμελεῖσθαι. Οἱ γὰρ τὰ δόματα διδόντες οὐκ αὐτοσχεδίως αὐτὰ διδόασιν ταῖς χήραις, ἀλλὰ συνεισφέρουσιν ἁπλῶς, ἑκούσια αὐτὰ ὀνομάζοντες, ὅπως σύ, ἐπιστάμενος τοὺς θλιβομένους, ἀκριβῶς ὡς ἀγαθὸς οἰκονόμος μερίζῃς αὐτοῖς ἐκ τοῦ δόματος: ὁ γὰρ θεὸς γινώσκει τὸν δεδωκότα, κἂν ἀπόντος αὐτοῦ ὑπὸ σοῦ τοῖς δεομένοις μερίζηται: καὶ αὐτὸς μὲν ἔχει τὸν τῆς εὐποιΐας μισθόν, σὺ δὲ τὸν τῆς εὐσυνειδήτου οἰκονομίας μακαρισμόν. Λέγε δὲ αὐτοῖς καί, τίς ὁ δεδωκώς, ἵνα καὶ ἐξ ὀνόματος ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ προσεύχωνται. Χρὴ γὰρ εὖ ποιεῖν πάντας ἀνθρώπους, μὴ φιλοκρινοῦντα τοῦτον ὅστις ᾖ ἢ ἐκεῖνον: ὁ γὰρ Κύριός φησι: «Παντὶ τῷ αἰτοῦντί σε δίδου.» Δῆλον δὲ ὡς τῷ χρῄζοντι κατὰ ἀλήθειαν, κἂν φίλος ᾖ κἂν ἐχθρός, κἂν συγγενὴς κἂν ἀλλότριος, κἂν ἄγαμος κἂν γεγαμηκὼς ὑπάρχῃ. Ἐν πάσῃ γὰρ γραφῇ ὁ Κύριος περὶ τῶν πενήτων παραινεῖ, λέγων διὰ μὲν Ἡσαΐου: «Διάθρυπτε πεινῶντι τὸν ἄρτον σου καὶ πτωχοὺς ἀστέγους εἰσάγαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου: ἐὰν ἴδῃς γυμνόν, περίβαλε, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν οἰκείων τοῦ σπέρματός σου οὐχ ὑπερόψῃ.» Καὶ διὰ τοῦ Δανιὴλ λέγει τῷ δυνάστῃ: «Διό, βασιλεῦ, ἡ βουλή μου ἀρεσάτω σοι, καὶ τὰς ἁμαρτίας σου ἐν ἐλεημοσύναις λύτρωσαι καὶ τὰς ἀδικίας σου ἐν οἰκτιρμοῖς πενήτων.» Καὶ διὰ Σολομῶνός φησιν: «Ἐλεημοσύναις καὶ πίστεσιν ἀποκαθαίρονται ἁμαρτίαι.» Καὶ διὰ τοῦ Δαυὶδ πάλιν λέγει: «Μακάριος ὁ συνιῶν ἐπὶ πτωχὸν καὶ πένητα, ἐν ἡμέρᾳ πονηρᾷ ῥύσεται αὐτὸν ὁ Κύριος.» Καὶ πάλιν: «Ἐσκόρπισεν, ἔδωκεν τοῖς πένησιν, ἡ δικαιοσύνη αὐτοῦ μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.» Καὶ ὁ Σολομών φησιν: «Ὁ ἐλεῶν πτωχὸν Κυρίῳ δανείζει, κατὰ δὲ τὸ δόμα αὐτοῦ ἀνταποδοθήσεται αὐτῷ.» Καὶ ἑξῆς: «Ὃς φράσσει τὰ ὦτα αὐτοῦ τοῦ μὴ εἰσακοῦσαι τοῦ πένητος, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπικαλέσεται καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ εἰσακούων αὐτοῦ.»
