And when he also had sat down, a silence fell as all gazed intently upon the emperor, and he, looking serenely upon all with cheerful eyes, and then gathering his thoughts to himself, with a quiet and gentle voice delivered the following speech: "6The fulfillment of my prayer, my friends, was to enjoy your company, "7and having obtained this, I confess my gratitude to the King of all, "7because in addition to all other blessings He has granted me this, to see what is greater than any good, "7I mean, to receive you all gathered together and to behold one common 3.12.2 "7harmonious mind of all. When very many points were being put forward by each party, and much controversy was arising at the start, the emperor listened to all with patience and attentively received the proposals with leisure, and taking up in turn the points raised by each party, he calmly brought together those who were contentiously opposing. 3.13.2 And making his addresses to each one gently and speaking in Greek, for he was not unskilled in this language either, he was sweet and pleasant, persuading some, shaming others with his speech, praising those who spoke well, and urging all toward unanimity, until he made them of one mind and one opinion on all the disputed 3.14.1 matters
