Samuel comes to him, and says to him, "what is this you have done?" But he puts forward the desperation of the people and the straits of the time.
Samuel, having threatened him with curses, prophesies that the kingdom will be given to another who is better than he, and departs. But Jonathan alone with his armor-bearer, forcing his way, went down to the outpost of the foreigners, and having given a sign to his armor-bearer, he attacked the sentinels, and struck down about 20 men. And the Lord brought a panic in the camp of the foreigners when they saw from afar the flight of the sentinels. Those on the hill with Saul, seeing the confusion of the foreigners' camp, make it known to Saul. And there was a priest there, Achias a Levite, wearing an ephod, and Saul told him 1.112 to inquire of the Lord. And as the camp of the foreigners was being cut down even more by their own hands (for the mixed multitude and the slaves who were with the foreigners rose up against themselves, and were striking them with swords), Saul told Achias to withdraw his hands, and he himself attacked the foreigners with the six hundred men. And the Hebrews who were hiding in the caves and the holes also came out, and they were with Saul, about ten thousand. Then Saul acted ignorantly, and cursed the people not to taste food until he had finished off his enemies. And all the land was taking its meal. Then occurred the events concerning Jonathan in his ignorant eating of the honey. And the people rescue him from death. And Saul waged war against all the nations round about him, prevailing against them. And again Samuel the prophet comes up to him, and tells him of the destruction of Amalek, and gives him a command, which he had received from God, not to spare any of him, from man to beast, from infant and suckling to old man, but also to destroy the entire female sex and all their cattle, and to corrupt all their baggage, because they had shown evils to the sons of Israel in their return from Egypt. But Saul, having achieved victory and wiped out Amalek, spared Agag their king, and the people plundered flocks and herds and sufficient baggage. And behold, Samuel comes to Gilgal, and says to Saul what God had said to him, both 1.113 the fall from the kingdom and the division of the people, who tore the corner of his cloak. And Saul forces Samuel to return with him, and with his own hands the prophet slaughters Agag the king of Amalek. Because of this disobedience of Saul, God said to Samuel, "I regret that I anointed Saul to be king, because he has turned back from following me and has not kept my words." And Samuel reproached Saul much for this disobedience. But he brought the blame upon the people and for sacrificing the livestock to God. And Samuel said to Saul, "Are burnt offerings and sacrifices as pleasing to the Lord as obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, they bring on the pain and trouble of teraphim. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord will also reject you from being king over Israel." And Samuel departed from him, and saw him no more. But Samuel, following the will of God, goes away to Bethlehem, and there he anointed the eighth son of Jesse, David, to be king, and the spirit of God is given. And then an evil spirit came upon Saul, and tormented him. And his acquaintances told him about David, that the spirit of God was in him, and that he sings, playing on the kinnor and psaltery and nabla. And Saul sent to Jesse, and took his son to play and to drive away the spirit that 1.114 was tormenting him. And the spirit departed from Saul, and he made him his armor-bearer. And David became beloved to Saul. Then the foreigners came out in heavy force, and the events concerning
