David and Goliath, whom he killed fighting in single combat, being eight feet in height, when he was 33 years old. whom the dancing women met, saying, "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands." And Saul became envious of David because to him were given the thousands, but to that one the ten thousands. And an evil spirit from God fell upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of his house. And David played with his hand as on each day, and the spear was in Saul's hand, and he said he would strike David, but David turned aside, and he struck the wall. Saul did this twice. But when Saul knew that God was allied with David, he made him a commander of a thousand, sending him away from his presence to go in and out in the war, saying, "Let the hand of the Philistines be against him rather than my hand," and he gave him Michal his daughter as a wife. But David, having fled from the presence of Saul, went to Samuel in the city of Armathaim, and found a company of prophets with Samuel. And Saul sent messengers once and twice and three times to seize David; and they remained prophesying. But Saul, angered, went himself by himself to seize him; and he was ecstatic, and he too was prophesying, and he stripped off his clothes, and lay 1.115 naked all day and night. And after these things David completely departed from Saul, having acquired a band of four hundred warriors. And after this Samuel dies, and is buried in his house in Armathaim. But Saul was still persecuting David. But Abishai and Joab went down into Saul's camp by night with David, and they took the spear and the flask of water. And David flees to Achish king of Gath, and he gives him the city of Ziklag, and he sojourns there four months; where the patricide Absalom set up a pillar in his own name, transgressing even in this. In which place also was stoned ..... Ishbosheth the Canaanite, who drew his sword against nine hundred wounded at one time. This one was not of the three, but mighty beyond the three. Then Adino, and this one drew a sword against eight hundred wounded. Eleazar, and third Shammah; these three broke through the battle line of the Philistines, and brought water from Bethlehem for David to drink when he asked. But Abishai, the brother of Joab and Asahel, drew their sword against the wounded one. and he was chief of the three not as being stronger than them or as they, but as a kinsman of the king; for his power did not come up to the three. But also Benaiah son of Joab, brother of David, being mighty, was compared with the three, yet he did not attain to their strength. And there were 1.116 37 other renowned and mighty men, of whom Asahel was chief. A rhomphaia is a broadsword, and not a spear, as some think, just as David says to the Philistine, "You come against me with a sword and with a spear and with a shield, but I will go against you in the name of the Lord God of Sabaoth." And David dies at the age of 70, having reigned seven years and six months over Judah, and thirty-two years and six months over every tribe. And he was thirty years old when he became king. That Solomon, even before he built the temple, offered incense in the high places, and all the people. But the greatest of his transgressions happened after the building of the temple.
That he made his royal throne of ivory, having at the back two protomes of calves, and two lions on either side near the throne. And he also made six steps, raising the throne in height, and on each step likewise lions set up as pillars, so that all the lions were twelve on the steps, and two near the throne. And Josephus says that in this also he acted lawlessly and transgressed the laws given by God to Moses and to the people; for they were not permitted to make animal figures or to pay attention to shadow-paintings even for the sake of appearance. And because Solomon acted impiously, Jeroboam takes the ten tribes.
