But to Rehoboam the son of Solomon two tribes are left, that 1.117 of Judah and that of Benjamin; for Jerusalem lies in the inheritance of the tribe of Benjamin, and for this reason it was joined to the tribe of Judah. That scripture records the first transgressions of Solomon and his achievements, but not as transgressions, since it appears that both before the building of the temple and after its building, while still a young man, he was sacrificing and burning incense on the high places and unlawfully had foreign women. For a time, however, in the first parts the history of scripture does not accuse him, not relating the events as if he had not acted badly. And again, not all things in the temple did he fashion piously. That God appeared twice to Solomon, urgently securing him to abstain from unlawful things. But Josephus says that he died ingloriously for this reason also, because along with his other lawless acts he fashioned lions and oxen into a lofty spectacle. For God does not permit these things to happen through the law, not even for the sake of sight and spectacle. That Ahijah the Shilonite, being a prophet, meeting Jeroboam the servant of Solomon, who was wearing a new garment, tore it into twelve pieces and gave him ten pieces, saying, "God gives you the ten tribes of Israel because of the iniquities of Solomon; however, after his death you will receive them." 1.118 That Solomon sought to kill Jeroboam, suspecting him. But he, knowing this, departed to Shishak king of Egypt, and was there until the death of his lord Solomon. And he took the daughter of Shishak as his wife. That the temple in Jerusalem had four courts, and into the outermost all were permitted to enter, even foreigners, but menstruating women alone were forbidden to pass. Into the second all Jews entered, and their women who were clean from every defilement. Into the third the males of the Jews, and into the fourth the priests alone. Into the sanctuary and to the altar the blameless priests, clothed in priestly garments. Into the holy of holies the high priest alone, clothed in his own vestment, once a year. That in his old age Solomon turned away from God, when his wives set up idols; for he who permits others to set them up, in effect establishes them himself. And for this reason Satan, Hadad, was given to him. That Jeroboam was a servant of Solomon, the son of a harlot woman, and he reigned over Israel in Samaria. And having joined battle with Abijah he was defeated, and 500,000 of Israel fell. That in the third year of the reign of Athaliah, Jehu killed Joram and Ahaziah and the sons of Ahab and Jezebel. 1.119 That Ahaz son of Uzziah, and father of Hezekiah, king of Judah, cut in pieces the panels of the stands. And they were lions and oxen and Cherubim. And the "mechonoth" is a laver. the bronze oxen supporting the bronze sea, which Solomon unlawfully fashioned. And he placed the sea on a stone base. And the rest has been written before. And some things from the Chronicles. The Chronicles often say what is missing and omit what is present, and often they also alter the whole meaning. For in saying that Asa did what was right in the sight of the Lord like David and Solomon his father, it alters the meaning; for the things concerning Solomon have been made manifest. And Asa smote Jeroboam in Israel with the tribe of Benjamin and Judah, five hundred thousand fighting men. And Jeroboam son of Nebat no longer lifted up his head against Judah. That the sisters of David were Zeruiah and Abigail, and to Zeruiah the sons were Abishai and Joab and Asahel, and to Abigail the son was Amasa. This one did not attain to the three mighty men of David. That Reuben, being the firstborn, fell from the blessing and from being numbered as the firstborn, because he went up to his father's bed, and Jacob his father gave it to Joseph, but he gave the birthright to Judah. 1.120 That the second of Chronicles says there was nothing in the tabernacle except the tablets only. That Jehoiada the
