by whom they were created, but "spirit" the personal holy spirit of God, by whom being sanctified they were strengthened. 1.10 For it is the divine name, the all-ruling and surpassing dignity, that is mentioned and glorified with the Father and the Son; the sanctifying and life-giving and bestower of heavenly light; the guardian of each one's perseverance in sameness; that which spoke to prophets and apostles, and strengthened martyrs to resist tyrannical cruelty; that which renews and sets free as lord, and makes us sons of God as a spirit of adoption; that which drives away hordes of demons by its illumination, and shames the adversary; that which opens for us the gates of heaven, and leads to the entrance of salvation, and makes us partakers of the life and hymnody of angels; 1.11 that which becomes for us a path leading to the heavenly God and Father himself; the sovereign and surpassing most serene epiphany; the fruitful and infinite and saving power; the unquantifiable and incomparable and venerable hypostasis; the undefiled and approved and all-holy glory; the divine grace that supplies what is lacking and heals what is weak; the ineffable and eternal goodness; the source of unfailing gifts and the advance of every good mind; the true revelation of things to come and unknown; 1.12 the seal of salvation and the divine anointing, the pledge of eternal good things, by whom every creature, visible and invisible, rational and non-rational, is strengthened; by whom we have divine regeneration and the remission of iniquities and the covering of sins and reconciliation to God; and a crown for the righteous and the receiving of good things; and a heavenly dwelling and unending life and an eternal inheritance of the kingdom of God; 1.13 he who partakes of whose fellowship through regeneration obtains the aforementioned good things and, according to the catholic epistles, is a partaker of the divine nature. For he who has partaken of incorruptible and eternal illumination remains ageless in mind, in youth and gentleness, and is likened to the only one who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light. 1.14 For the sacred seers of the old and new testament know that the Holy Spirit is of the highest single divine substance. At any rate, they testify immediately:
2.ν Concerning the Holy Spirit being of God; and concerning the heretical opposition
2.1 First, that it is the Spirit of God and from God, though not after him, and alone knowing the things of God, and being upon all, they say the following: 2.2 Moses in Genesis from the person of God: "My spirit shall not remain in these men forever, because they are flesh." Haggai likewise from the divine voice: "I am with you, and my spirit stands in your midst;" 2.3 Zechariah likewise: "But hear my words, and receive my statutes, which I command in my spirit to my servants the prophets;" 2.4 Isaiah from the Father to the Son: "My spirit, which is upon you, and the words which I have given into your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth and from the mouth of your seed;" calling his seed the faithful, whom he also called to adoption. 2.5 and again from the Son: "The spirit of the Lord is upon me." That these things have been fulfilled in you in the economy, Matthew said thus: "that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying: '4Behold my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my spirit upon him;'5" 2.6 and again from the Father: "For a spirit shall go forth from me." 2.7 and in Ezekiel the most high Father names our spirit "your" spirit, but the Holy Spirit his own, as proceeding from him by nature: "and I will give you a new heart
