you recommend; for the death of a child you turn things upside down. For I leave aside the other things worthy of much grief, such as auguries, and omens from words, observations, nativities, symbols, amulets, divinations, incantations, magic. Truly these things are great, and sufficient to call forth the wrath of God, because even after He sent his own Son, we dare such things. What is it then? Nothing else, but that we must mourn; for scarcely a fraction of the world is saved. But those who are perishing rejoice when they hear this, as if they are not enduring this alone, but with many others. And what kind of joy is this? For they will pay the penalty for this very joy. For do not think that, as it is here, having companions in misfortunes brings comfort, so it will be there too. From where is this clear? I will make it plain. Tell me: if someone were commanded to be burned, and then saw his child being burned with him, and the smell of roasting flesh rising up, would he not die? Most certainly; and how, I say. For if those who are not suffering, seeing these things happen, grow numb and faint, much more will those who are being punished suffer this. And do not be surprised; for hear a certain wise man saying, You also have been captured just as we have, and you are counted among us. For human nature somehow has sympathy, and we are broken by the misfortunes of others. Tell me now, will the father, seeing his son lying under the same sentence, receive comfort or an addition to his woes? and what of a husband his wife? and what of a man another man? Are we not then more broken? Yes, one says; but those passions are not there. I know that too, but others are there far more grievous; for there will be inconsolable weeping then, when all see one another, when all are lamenting. Those who are in famine, tell me, do they receive comfort for their own evils from the company of others? and what when a child, or a father, and a wife, and grandchildren pay the same penalty? and what when we see friends, do we have comfort? It is not so, it is not so, but rather our woes are intensified for us. And besides these, there are evils which have no comfort from being common, on account of their severity; for example, what I mean: Let someone be lying in fire, and another again; how will they comfort one another? Tell me, I beg you, if we have ever been in a strong fever, has not everything that could give comfort left us? Naturally; for when the woes prevail, the soul no longer has leisure to be comforted. Or do you not see the women who have lost their husbands, how many other women they can count who have suffered the same thing? But their grief becomes no less from this. Let us not then be nourished by this 62.553 hope, but let us find one comfort, to repent of our sins, and to hold to the good way that leads to heaven, that we may obtain the kingdom of heaven, by the grace 62.554 and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

HOMILY XI. Deacons, likewise, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. And let these also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless.

1. Having spoken concerning bishops, and characterized them, and said what they ought to have, and from what they ought to abstain, and having passed over the order of presbyters, he jumped to the deacons. Why so? Because there is not much difference between them and the bishops. And

Τὰ γὰρ ἄλλα ἀφίημι τὰ πολλοῦ πένθους ἄξια, οἷον οἰωνισμοὺς, καὶ κλῃδονισμοὺς, παρατηρήσεις, γενέσεις, σύμβολα, περιάμματα, μαντείας, ἐπῳδὰς, μαγείας. Τί ἐστιν ἄρα; Οὐδὲν ἕτερον, ἢ πενθεῖν χρή· τὸ γὰρ πολλοστὸν τοῦ κόσμου μόλις διασώζεται. Ἀλλ' οἱ ἀπολλύμενοι ἀκούοντες χαίρουσιν, ὡς οὐκ αὐτοὶ μόνοι τοῦτο ὑπομένοντες, ἀλλὰ μετὰ πλειόνων. Εἰπὲ γάρ μοι· εἴ τις κελευσθείη καυθῆναι, εἶτα καὶ τὸν παῖδα συγκαιόμενον αὐτῷ ἴδοι, καὶ κνίσσαν ἀπὸ τῶν κρεῶν ἀνιοῦσαν, οὐκ ἀποθανεῖται; Σφόδρα γε· καὶ πῶς, ἐγὼ λέγω. Εἰ γὰρ οἱ μὴ πάσχοντες, ταῦτα ὁρῶντες γινόμενα, ναρκῶσι καὶ ἐκλύονται, πολλῷ μᾶλλον οἱ κακούμενοι τοῦτο πείσονται. Καὶ μὴ θαυμάσῃς· ἄκουε γάρ τινος σοφοῦ λέγοντος, Καὶ σὺ ἑάλως ὥσπερ καὶ ἡμεῖς, ἐν ἡμῖν δὲ κατελογίσθης. Ἔχει γάρ πως φύσει τὸ συμπαθὲς τὸ ἀνθρώπινον, καὶ ταῖς τῶν ἑτέρων κατακλώμεθα συμφοραῖς. Χωρὶς δὲ τούτων ἔστι κακὰ, ἃ μὴ ἔχει παραμυθίαν ἀπὸ τῶν κοινῶν διὰ τὴν χαλεπότητα· οἷόν τι λέγω· Ἔστω τις ἐν πυρὶ κείμενος, καὶ ἄλλος πάλιν· πῶς ἀλλήλους παραμυθήσονται; Εἰπέ μοι, παρακαλῶ, εἴ ποτε ἐν πυρετῷ γεγόναμεν σφοδρῷ, οὐχὶ πάντα τὰ τῆς παραμυθίας ἡμῖν ἐξέλιπεν; Εἰκότως· ὅταν γὰρ ἐπικρατῇ τὰ δεινὰ, οὐκέτι ἂν ἔχοι σχολὴν παραμυθεῖσθαι ἡ ψυχή. Ἢ οὐχ ὁρᾷς τὰς τοὺς ἄνδρας ἀποβαλούσας, πόσας ἔχουσιν ἀριθμεῖν ἑτέρας γυναῖκας τὸ αὐτὸ παθούσας; ἀλλ' οὐδὲν ἀπὸ τούτου τὸ πένθος ἔλαττον γίνεται. Μὴ δὴ ταύτῃ 62.553 τρεφώμεθα τῇ ἐλπίδι, ἀλλὰ μίαν εὕρωμεν παραμυθίαν, τὸ μετανοεῖν ἐπὶ τοῖς ἡμαρτημένοις, καὶ ἔχεσθαι τῆς ἀγαθῆς ὁδοῦ τῆς ἐπὶ τὸν οὐρανὸν φερούσης, ἵνα τῆς τῶν οὐρανῶν βασιλείας ἐπιτύχωμεν, χάριτι 62.554 καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ ἅμα τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι δόξα, κράτος, τιμὴ, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
