using what remedy shall I accomplish the cleansing of your foul-smelling sores? For you have dared the deeds of a woman who has scraped the shame from her brow, and shamelessly and openly pursues licentiousness. "And you have committed fornication threefold in your daughters." Your lawlessness, he says, is three times that of your subject cities, and she who ought to have been a teacher of piety has been shown to be an archetype of all impiety. 31. In that you built, he says, your brothel at the head of every road, and you made your high place in every square, and you did not become like a prostitute gathering her wages. For neither did the need for necessities lead you to this licentiousness; for enjoying all good things, and reveling in my gifts, you offered to them what was given to you by me. Therefore you are like a woman, who though joined to a husband, offers her beauty to adulterers, and takes out her husband's things, and supplies them to her lovers. 32. For the wife, he says, and the adulteress who goes to strangers from under her own husband, is like you, the one who receives wages from her own husband, and gives additional wages to all who commit fornication with her. And going through the same thing more broadly, in order to clearly expose the absurdity. 33. For to all prostitutes, he says, wages are given, but you gave additional wages to all your lovers, and you bribed them to come to you from all around in your prostitution. For no one ever received any good thing from the avenging demons; but those who choose to serve them, offering to them the things supplied by God, draw upon themselves their dominion. For he hinted at this by saying: "And you bribed them to come to you from all around in your prostitution." For by what you offered, he says, you urged them to run to you, and to run up to you, and to be with you continually. 81.945 34. And there was in you a perversion contrary to other women in your prostitution, and after you they will not prostitute themselves; for in your giving additional wages, and wages not being given to you, there has been in you a perversion. For you are like, he says, the licentious women, who are available to all according to their intercourse with many lovers; but in offering a wage, and not receiving one, you continue to do the opposite of them; wherefore you have surpassed both those before you, and those after you, in this kind of licentiousness. Thus having laid bare her lawlessness, he gives her a name from her deeds, and says: 35, 30. Therefore, prostitute, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord Adonai: Because you poured out your bronze, and your shame will be uncovered in your prostitution to your lovers and for all the abominations of your iniquities, and in the blood of your children, which you have given to them. An unapproved coin, which has received an admixture of other materials, is called debased. Since, therefore, he says, you mixed not some small lawlessness with my laws, but poured out much bronze, so that the nature of the gold no longer even appears, but your whole coin is seen to be bronze, I will therefore strip you of my providence, and I will fill you with shame, exacting penalties from you for every kind of lawlessness, and especially for the unjust slaughter of your children, which you offered to the blood-stained demons. 37. Therefore behold, I am gathering against you all your lovers, with whom you have mingled, and all whom you loved, with all whom you hated, and I will gather them against you from all around. Through your lovers themselves, he says, I will punish you; you emulated the impiety of the Chaldeans and Assyrians, and of the Canaanites and Egyptians; I will use these as instruments against you, bringing upon you worthy punishments; and I will join with your lovers also those who are hated by you, so that both the latter and the former may see your great lawlessness. "For I will uncover," he says, "your evil deeds to them, and they will see all your shame." 38. And I will judge you with the judgment of adulteresses and of those who shed blood, and I will give you over to the blood of my wrath and jealousy. For you will pay the penalties of man-slaying and adulterous women; for of those whose lawlessness you imitated, you will receive the
