But it may be said that the voice of the Father was addressed to the Holy Spirit. But neither does the Holy Spirit require instruction by speech, for being God, as saith the Apostle, He “searcheth all things, yea the deep things of God41 1 Cor. ii. 10..” If, then, God utters any word, and all speech is directed to the ear, let those who maintain that God expresses Himself in the language of continuous discourse, inform us what audience He addressed. Himself He needs not address. The Son has no need of instruction by words. The Holy Ghost searcheth even the deep things of God. Creation did not yet exist. To whom, then, was God’s word addressed?
ἀλλ' ἐρεῖ τις πρὸς τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον τοῦ πατρὸς γίνεσθαι τὴν φωνήν. οὐδὲ τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς ἐκ ῥημάτων διδασκαλίας προσδέεται, ὃ ἐν τῷ θεῷ ἐστι, καθώς φησιν ὁ ἀπόστολος, καὶ πάντα ἐρευνᾷ, καὶ τὰ βάθη τοῦ θεοῦ. εἰ οὖν ῥήματα φθέγγεται ὁ θεός, πᾶς δὲ λόγος ἐπὶ ἀκοῆς ἐνεργεῖται, οἱ δημηγορεῖν τὸν θεὸν ἐν διεξοδικοῖς λόγοις ἀποφαινόμενοι γνωρισάτωσαν ἡμῖν καὶ τὸ τῶν θείων λόγων ἀκροατήριον. πρὸς ἑαυτὸν λαλεῖν οὐκ ἐδέετο, ὁ υἱὸς ἀπροσδεὴς ἦν τῆς ἐκ ῥημάτων διδασκαλίας, τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον πάντα, φησίν, ἐρευνᾷ, καὶ τὰ βάθη τοῦ θεοῦ, ἡ κτίσις οὔπω ἦν: πρὸς τίνα ὁ λόγος ἐγίνετο;
