the faith of the incarnation at which the Jews were scandalized. I am he whom you slapped, whom you scourged, whom you dragged and brought now to Caiaphas, and later to Pilate, whom you continually called the son of the carpenter, whom you numbered among the dead, laughing loudly at those who preached the resurrection. 8.23.2 Speaking to them now I do not appear; being present I am not seen; illuminating the soul I bring blindness to the eyes. Believe, therefore, that I also appeared to Stephen when, saying this to you, he was disbelieved. It is hard for you, therefore, to kick against the goads. He calls the nails of the cross 'goads'. For just as one who strikes against sharpened iron does not destroy it—for how could he destroy the hard thing?—but wounds himself, so also the one who contends against God draws upon himself voluntary destruction. 8.23.3 Be sober, therefore, for the future, and having lost your sight through the wondrous splendor, now especially understand that for this reason I put on a body and became man, so that not all might be blinded who converse with the Godhead without a veil. 8.24.1 These things; and being led by the hand, Paul was led away, a pitiable sight, or rather, a graceful one and worthy of gladness. The wolf was bound, the plunderer was made sober, the savage was tamed, the runner walked gently, the tyrant of the disciples was led away a disciple, he whose hands were stained with the blood of Stephen was led to drink the blood of the other. And for three days he continued living in blindness. And very fittingly. For he who sinned against the Trinity was justly condemned to the punishment equal in number to the sin. Thus, therefore, the divine man was initiated into piety. And since he had tasted the truth and learned through experience that Christ lives and is and reigns over all things, and was neither destroyed by death nor stolen by the disciples, quickly changing his allegiance from the law to the gospel he announced to all Christ as God, whom yesterday and the day before he reviled with blasphemies, and he was such an ally as he had been an enemy; for he was strong in both. 8.25.2 And having entered suddenly and unexpectedly into the synagogues of Damascus, he publicly spoke the words of the law and the prophets, not to strengthen the law, but from it to establish Christ, and comparing the proclamations of the prophets with the things that had happened and through the law casting out the law. Just as, therefore, also he says about himself writing to the Romans: For I through the law died to the law; that is, being guided by the Mosaic writings I came to know the piety of the gospel. 8.25.3 Amazement therefore seized Damascus and all marveled to each other: Come, behold the Hebrew of Tarsus, the zealous disciple of the ancestral law, a vehement advocate for Jesus and calling him God and proving from our own scriptures that this is the Savior according to the promise. There is fear, therefore, lest he persuade the whole city, lest he also win over the whole populace and make them abandon the law. 8.25.4 For he is a practitioner of Scripture and sharp in mind and vigorous in speech and resourceful in manner and possessing much credibility; from which things, knowing our ways accurately, he does not seem to be mistaken through ignorance, but through examination and judgment to have found the truth. The first preaching of the noble convert cast a great city, a populous people, into this perplexity, and Damascus was more troubled then than formerly the Christians in Jerusalem, when Paul was stoning Stephen. 8.25.5 For just as the marvelous among the champions, wherever they might change their allegiance, there they carry the victory, so the divine man always made those great to whom he offered his own support. 8.26.1 Thus then, having preached the gospel in Phoenicia and having cast there the first seeds of his apostleship where he himself was also enlightened with knowledge, he came to Jerusalem, a strange and beautiful sight to those there. For those who had sent him forth and given him the authority to bring bonds against the Christians, not knowing what had happened in the meantime, seeing

Ἐγώ εἰμι ἐκεῖνος ὃν ἐρραπίζετε, ὃν ἐφραγελλοῦτε, ὃν εἵλκετε καὶ ἐφέρετε νῦν μὲν πρὸς Καϊάφαν, ὕστερον δὲ πρὸς Πιλᾶτον, ὃν ἀπεκαλεῖτε συνεχῶς υἱὸν τοῦ τέκτονος, ὃν ἐν τοῖς νεκροῖς ἠριθμεῖτε γελῶντες μεγάλα πρὸς τοὺς κηρύττοντας τὴν ἀνάστασιν. 8.23.2 Ἐκείνοις νῦν λαλῶν οὐ φαίνομαι· παρὼν οὐχ ὁρῶμαι· φωτίζων ψυχὴν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἐπάγω[ν] τυφλότητα. Πίστευσον οὖν, ὅτι καὶ Στεφάνῳ ἐφαινόμην ὅτε τοῦτο λέγων πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἠπιστεῖτο. Σκλῆρον οὖν σοι πρὸς κέντρα λακτίζειν. Κέντρα λέγει τοῦ σταυροῦ τοὺς ἥλους. Ὡς γὰρ ὁ σιδήρῳ τεθηγμένῳ ἐνρηγνύμενος οὐκ ἐκεῖνον διαφθείρει πῶς γὰρ τὸν σκληρόν; ἑαυτὸν δὲ τιτρώσκει, οὕτω καὶ ὁ πρὸς Θεὸν φιλονεικῶν αὐθαίρετον ἐπισπᾶται τὸν ὄλεθρον. 8.23.3 Σωφρόνησον οὖν τοῦ λοιποῦ καὶ τὴν ὄψιν ἀπολέσας διὰ τῆς θαυμαστῆς λαμπηδόνος νῦν μάλιστα νόησον, ὅτι διὰ τοῦτο ἐνεδυσάμην σῶμα καὶ ἐγενόμην ἄνθρωπος, ἵνα μὴ πάντες τυφλωθῶσιν οἱ γυμνοὶ παραπετάσματος προσομιλοῦντες θεότητι. 8.24.1 Ταῦτα· καὶ χειραγωγούμενος ὁ Παῦλος ἀπήγετο ἐλεεινὸν θέαμα, μᾶλλον δὲ χάριεν καὶ θυμηδίας ἄξιον. Ἐδέθη ὁ λύκος, ἐσωφρονίσθη ὁ ἅρπαξ, ἡμερώθη ὁ ἄγριος, ἐβάδιζε πράως ὁ τρέχων, ἀπήγετο μαθητὴς ὁ τῶν μαθητῶν τύραννος, ἤγετο πιεῖν τοῦ ἄλλου τὸ αἷμα ὁ τῷ αἵματι Στεφάνου μεμολυσμένος τὰς χεῖρας. Ἐπὶ τρεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας διετέλεσεν ἐν τυφλότητι ζῶν. Καὶ μάλα εἰκότως. Ὁ γὰρ εἰς τὴν Τριάδα διαμαρτὼν δικαίως ἰσάριθμον τῆς ἁμαρτίας κατεδικάσθη τὴν τιμωρίαν. Οὕτως μὲν οὖν ὁ θεσπέσιος ἐμυσταγωγήθη πρὸς τὴν εὐσέβειαν. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ τῆς ἀληθείας ἐγεύσατο καὶ διὰ τῆς πείρας ἔμαθεν, ὅτι ζῇ ὁ Χριστὸς καὶ ἔστιν καὶ βασιλεύει τῶν ὅλων, οὔτε δὲ ἐφθάρη παρὰ τοῦ θανάτου οὔτε ἐκλάπη παρὰ τῶν μαθητῶν, ταχέως ἐκ τοῦ νόμου μεταταξάμενος πρὸς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον πᾶσι κατήγγελλε Θεὸν τὸν Χριστόν, ὃν χθὲς καὶ πρώην ἐλοιδόρει ταῖς βλασφημίαις, καὶ τοιοῦτος ἦν σύμμαχος οἷος καὶ πολέμιος· ἰσχυρὸς γὰρ ἀμφότερα. 8.25.2 Ἀθρόον δὲ καὶ ἀδοκήτως εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς ∆αμασκοῦ τοῦ νόμου καὶ τῶν προφητῶν ἐδημηγόρει τοὺς λόγους, οὐ νόμον κρατύνων, ἀλλ' ἀπ' ἐκείνου τὸν Χριστὸν συγκροτῶν καὶ συγκρίνων τοῖς γινομένοις πράγμασι τὰς προσαγορεύσεις τῶν προφητῶν καὶ διὰ νόμου νόμον ἐκβάλλων. Ὥσπερ οὖν καὶ περὶ ἑαυτοῦ φησιν ἐπιστέλλων Ῥωμαίοις· Ἐγὼ γὰρ διὰ νόμου νόμῳ ἀπέθανον· τούτεστιν, Ἀπὸ τῶν Μωσαϊκῶν γραμμάτων ὁδηγηθεὶς ἐπέγνων τὴν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου εὐσέβειαν. 8.25.3 Ἔκπληξις οὖν εἶχε τὴν ∆αμασκὸν καὶ πάντες πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς ἐξεθείαζον· ∆εῦτε, θεᾶσθε τὸν Ταρσέα Ἑβραῖον, τὸν τοῦ πατρῴου νόμου ζέοντα μαθητήν, σφοδρὸν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ συνήγορον καὶ Θεὸν αὐτὸν ἀνακαλοῦντα καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἡμετέρων γραμμάτων ἀποδεικνύντα, ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κατ' ἐπαγγελίαν Σωτήρ. ∆έος οὖν μὴ πᾶσαν καταπείσῃ τὴν πόλιν, μὴ καὶ ὅλον τὸν δῆμον ἐπαγάγηται καὶ ἀποστήσῃ τοῦ νόμου. 8.25.4 Καὶ γάρ ἐστι τῆς Γραφῆς ἀσκητὴς καὶ τὸν νοῦν ὀξὺς καὶ γοργὸς τὸν λόγον καὶ τὸν τρόπον εὐμήχανος καὶ πολὺ κεκτημένος τὸ ἀξιόπιστον· ἀφ' ὧν ἀκριβῶς εἰδὼς τὰ ἡμέτερα οὐκ ἀγνοίᾳ δοκεῖ πλανᾶσθαι, ἀλλὰ δοκιμασίᾳ καὶ κρίσει τὸ ἀληθὲς εὑρηκέναι. Εἰς ταύτην τὴν ἀμηχανίαν ἐνέβαλε πόλιν μεγάλην, δῆμον πολυάνθρωπον, τὸ πρῶτον τοῦ γενναίου προσηλύτου κήρυγμα καὶ πλέον τότε ∆αμασκὸς ἐταράττετο ἢ πρώην ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις χριστιανοί, ἡνίκα Στέφανον Παῦλος ἐλίθαζεν. 8.25.5 Ὡς γὰρ οἱ θαυμαστοὶ τῶν ἀριστέων ὅπου δ' ἂν μετατάξωνται, ἐκεῖ τὴν νίκην μετάγουσιν, οὕτως ὁ θεσπέσιος ἀνὴρ ἐκείνους πάντως ἐποίει μεγάλους οἷς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ παρεῖχε ῥοπήν. 8.26.1 Οὕτω τοίνυν καταγγείλας ἐν τῇ Φοινίκῃ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον καὶ τὰ πρῶτα σπέρματα τῆς ἀποστολῆς ἐκεῖ καταβαλόμενος ἔνθα καὶ αὐτὸς ἐφωτίσθη τῇ γνώσει, ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν Ἱερουσαλήμ, ξένον τοῖς ἐκεῖ καὶ καλὸν θέαμα. Οἱ μὲν γὰρ προπέμψαντες αὐτὸν καὶ δόντες τὰ δεσμὰ φέρειν κατὰ χριστιανῶν οὐκ εἰδότες τὰ ἐν μέσῳ συμβάντα, θεασάμενοι
