temporary enjoyment with obvious danger and unjust resources, and how on the one hand the fears of rulers fanned your suspicion about salvation, and on the other hand the clamors of public affairs shook your hearth, and the pressure of evils turned your mind away from the one who was able to help you; when you were practicing little by little to look around for the Savior, who brings fears for benefit, and who delivers and protects you, while you trifled against him in times of license; when you were training yourself for a change to a venerable way of life, counting as refuse your very dangerous wealth, and renouncing the care of a household and the company of a wife. Wholly raised up, like a stranger and a wanderer, exchanging fields and cities, you ran down to Jerusalem, where I myself, spending time with you, counted you blessed for your ascetic labors, when, continuing to fast in weekly cycles, you philosophized with God, at the same time avoiding the encounters of men with a word of excuse, and having applied quiet and a solitary life to yourself, you shunned the tumults of the city. Passing your time with your body in rough sackcloth and binding your loins with a hard belt, you patiently afflicted your bones. And hollowing your flanks with deprivations you made them sink even to the parts of your back, and you denied the use of a soft bandage, but from within, drawing up your loins like a cupping-glass, you forced them to cling to the region of your kidneys, and having emptied all the fat of your flesh, you nobly dried up the channels of your belly, and having folded your very stomach with fasting, you made the parts of your ribs overshadow the parts of your navel, like some projection of a roof, and, with your whole body contracted, giving praise to God during the hours of the night, you smoothed your wet beard with the channels of your tears. And why must I recount each thing? Remember how many mouths of saints you greeted with a kiss, how many holy bodies you embraced, how many cherished your hands as undefiled, how many servants of God, like attendants, ran up to you, clinging to your knees. 45.2 And the end of these things, what is it? A slanderous report of adultery, flying faster than an arrow, wounds our ears, piercing our inwards with a sharper sting. What great crafty variety of the Deceiver led you into such a ruinous stumble? What intricate nets of the devil, having bound you fast, proved the energies of virtue to be motionless? Where have the accounts of your labors gone for me? For is it worthy to disbelieve? And how shall we not, from the clear things, also accept into belief the things previously hidden, if you bound with dreadful oaths the souls who fled for refuge to God, when what is beyond the meticulously observed 'yes' and 'no' has been assigned to the devil? At the same time, therefore, you have become a surety for ruinous perjury and, having debased the character of the ascetic life, you have sent the shame up to the Apostles and the Lord himself. You have disgraced the boast of purity, you have defamed the profession of moderation, we have become a tragedy for captives, our affairs are dramatized for Jews and Greeks. You have cut through the spirit of monks, you have led the more scrupulous into fear and cowardice, wondering still at the power of the devil; you have moved the indifferent to a zeal for licentiousness. You have undone, as far as it depended on you, the boast of Christ, who said: "Take heart, I have conquered the world and its ruler." You have mixed for your fatherland a cup of ill repute; truly you have brought to pass the Proverbs: "Like a deer shot in the liver." But what now? The tower of strength has not fallen, brother, the medicines of repentance have not been defamed, the city of refuge has not been closed. Do not remain in the depth of evils, do not lend yourself to the Manslayer. The Lord knows how to raise up the broken. Flee not far away, but run back to us. Take up again youthful labors, dissolving the low-minded and sticky pleasure with second achievements. Look up to the day of the end, so near to our life, and know how
