our labor, and our toil; working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we preached the Gospel of God, and what follows. That the one who presides over the word must be merciful and compassionate, and especially toward those whose souls are afflicted. Chapter 20. MATTHEW. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples: Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, He said: Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice’; for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. MATTHEW. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were distressed, like sheep without a shepherd. That it is necessary also in the needs of the body to have compassion on those entrusted to us, and to care for them. Chapter 21. MATTHEW. I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days and have nothing to eat, and I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way. MARK. And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling down to him, and saying to him, that If you are willing, you can make me clean. Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him: I am willing; be cleansed. ACTS. Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint among the Hellenists against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said: It is not desirable for us to leave the word of God and serve tables. Therefore seek out from among you, brethren, seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. That the one who presides over the word must not, being ambitious to work with his own hands in lesser things, fall short of the diligence owed to greater things. Chapter 22. ACTS. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said: It is not desirable for us to leave the word of God and serve tables. And after a little: but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. 31.836 That one must not be ostentatious, nor make merchandise of the word of teaching with flattery of the hearers, for the fulfillment of one's own pleasures, or needs; but to be such as speaking for the glory of God in His presence. Chapter 23. MATTHEW. But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher; and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. JOHN. My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him, he is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. TO THE CORINTHIANS, 2nd. For we are not, as so many, peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ. TO THE THESSALONIANS, 1st. For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit. But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts. For neither at any time did we use flattering words toward you, as you know, nor with a cloak for covetousness—God is witness—nor

Ὅτι δεῖ τὸν προεστῶτα τοῦ λόγου ἐλεήμονα καὶ εὔσπλαγχνον εἶναι, καὶ μάλιστα ἐπὶ τῶν κεκακω μένων τὰς ψυχάς. Κεφάλ. Κʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Καὶ ἰδόντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, εἶπον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ· ∆ιὰ τί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίει ὁ διδάσκαλος ὑμῶν; Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀκούσας, εἶπεν· Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ὑγιαίνοντες ἰατροῦ, ἀλλ' οἱ κακῶς ἔχοντες. Πο ρευθέντες δὲ, μάθετε τί ἐστιν· Ἔλεον θέλω, καὶ οὐ θυσίαν· οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον καλέσαι δικαίους, ἀλλὰ ἁμαρτωλοὺς εἰς μετάνοιαν. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Ἰδὼν δὲ τοὺς ὄχλους, εὐσπλαγχνίσθη περὶ αὐτῶν, ὅτι ἦσαν ἐσκυλμένοι, ὡς πρόβατα μὴ ἔχοντα ποι μένα. Ὅτι δεῖ καὶ ἐν ταῖς τοῦ σώματος χρείαις σπλαγχνί ζεσθαι ἐπὶ τοῖς πεπιστευμένοις, καὶ φροντίζειν αὐτῶν. Κεφάλ. ΚΑʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον, ὅτι ἤδη ἡμέραι τρεῖς προσμένουσί μοι, καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσι τί φάγωσι, καὶ ἀπολῦσαι αὐτοὺς νήστεις οὐ θέλω, μήποτε ἐκλυθῶσιν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ. ΜΑΡ ΚΟΣ. Καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν λεπρὸς, παρακα λῶν αὐτὸν, καὶ γονυπετῶν αὐτὸν, καὶ λέγων αὐ τῷ, ὅτι Ἐὰν θέλῃς, δύνασαί με καθαρίσαι. Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς σπλαγχνισθεὶς, ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα αὐ τοῦ, ἥψατο αὐτοῦ, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Θέλω, κα θαρίσθητι. ΠΡΑΞΕΙΣ. Ἐν δὲ ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις πληθυνόντων τῶν μαθητῶν, ἐγένετο γογγυσμὸς τῶν Ἑλληνιστῶν πρὸς τοὺς Ἑβραίους, ὅτι παρεθεωροῦντο ἐν τῇ διακονίᾳ τῇ καθημερινῇ αἱ χῆραι αὐτῶν. Προσκαλεσάμενοι δὲ οἱ δώδεκα τὸ πλῆθος τῶν μαθητῶν, εἶπον· Οὐκ ἀρεστόν ἐστι καταλιπόντας ἡμᾶς τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ, διακονεῖν ταῖς τραπέζαις. Ἐπισκέψασθε, ἀδελφοὶ, ἄνδρας ἐξ ὑμῶν μαρτυρουμένους ἑπτὰ, πλήρεις Πνεύματος ἁγίου καὶ σοφίας, οὓς καταστήσομεν ἐπὶ τῆς χρείας ταύτης. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ τὸν προεστῶτα τοῦ λόγου ἐν τοῖς ἐλάτ τοσιν αὐτουργεῖν φιλοτιμούμενον τῆς ὀφειλομένης περὶ τὰ μείζω σπουδῆς ἀπολείπεσθαι. Κεφάλ. ΚΒʹ. ΠΡΑΞΕΙΣ. Προσκαλεσάμενοι δὲ οἱ δώδεκα τὸ πλῆθος τῶν μαθητῶν, εἶπον· Οὐκ ἀρεστόν ἐστι καταλιπόντας ἡμᾶς τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ, διακονεῖν τραπέζαις. Καὶ μετ' ὀλίγα· Ἡμεῖς δὲ τῇ προ σευχῇ καὶ τῇ διακονίᾳ τοῦ λόγου προσκαρτερή σωμεν. 31.836 Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ ἐπιδεικτιᾷν, οὐδὲ ἐμπορεύεσθαι τὸν λό γον τῆς διδασκαλίας ἐν κολακείᾳ τῶν ἀκουόντων, εἰς πληροφορίαν τῶν ἰδίων ἡδονῶν, ἤτοι χρειῶν· ἀλλὰ τοιούτους εἶναι, ὡς εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ ἐν ώπιον αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντας. Κεφάλ. ΚΓʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Πάντα δὲ τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν ποιοῦσι πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι τοῖς ἀνθρώποις· πλατύνουσι δὲ τὰ φυλακτήρια αὐτῶν, καὶ μεγαλύνουσι τὰ κρά σπεδα τῶν ἱματίων αὐτῶν· φιλοῦσί τε τὰς πρω τοκλισίας ἐν τοῖς δείπνοις, καὶ τὰς πρωτοκαθ εδρίας ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς, καὶ τοὺς ἀσπασμοὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς, καὶ καλεῖσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων, Ῥαββὶ, Ῥαββί. Ὑμεῖς δὲ μὴ κληθῆτε Ῥαββίεἷς γάρ ἐστιν ὑμῶν ὁ καθηγητής· πάντες δὲ ὑμεῖς ἀδελφοί ἐστε. Καὶ πατέρα μὴ καλέσητε ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· εἷς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν, ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. Μηδὲ κληθῆτε καθηγηταί· εἷς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ καθηγητὴς ὑμῶν, ὁ Χριστός. ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ. Ἡ ἐμὴ διδαχὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὴ, ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαν τός με. Ἐάν τις τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιῇ, γνώσε ται περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς, πότερον ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν, ἦ ἐγὼ ἀπ' ἐμαυτοῦ λαλῶ. Ὁ ἀφ' ἑαυτοῦ λαλῶν, τὴν δόξαν τὴν ἰδίαν ζητεῖ· ὁ δὲ ζητῶν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ πέμψαντος αὐτὸν, οὗτος ἀληθής ἐστιν, καὶ ἀδικία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. βʹ. Οὐ γάρ ἐσμεν, ὡς οἱ πολλοὶ, καπηλεύοντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐξ εἰλικρινείας, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐκ Θεοῦ, κατενώπιον Θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ λαλοῦμεν. ΠΡΟΣ ΘΕΣΣ. αʹ. Ἡ γὰρ παράκλησις ἡμῶν οὐκ ἐκ πλάνης, οὐδὲ ἐξ ἀκαθαρσίας, οὐδὲ ἐν δόλῳ· ἀλλὰ καθὼς δεδοκιμάσμεθα ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ πιστευθῆναι τὸ Εὐαγγέλιον, οὕτω λαλοῦμεν· οὐχ ὡς ἀνθρώ ποις ἀρέσκοντες, ἀλλὰ τῷ Θεῷ τῷ δοκιμάζοντι τὰς καρδίας ἡμῶν. Οὔτε γάρ ποτε ἐν λόγῳ κολα κείας ἐγενήθημεν πρὸς ὑμᾶς, καθὼς οἴδατε, οὔτε προφάσει πλεονεξίας, Θεὸς μάρτυς, οὔτε
