they will have fine things to eat from what I will cook! If I do not make them rise from the table fasting or vomit whatever they have eaten, I am not I!" and simply thus does the wretched one do everything with great madness. And he likewise makes the brothers' cooking and their pulses smoky and burns them, throwing everything unwashed and uncleaned into the pots, and he throws salt in them beyond measure making them brine, and he allows their hot drink to be lukewarm so that, disgusted, they may be disturbed to vomit up the food; and if a brother says something to him or even sends something to be cooked and prepared, he says shamelessly: "Has he no pity? What master has commanded his slave! Woe, let him not eat until I draw near or prepare it!". And while he acts thus in all things, he is found leaping forward and running to only those services and ministries where he knows he has a way to steal or pilfer something; and if he is not preferred more than all, he is openly grieved and secretly grumbles in distress to those like him; but when he is commanded for such things, he rises as if from the dead and as if from Hades, and immediately his face brightens and his eyes become cheerful. And even if out of much wickedness he should wish to play the hypocrite so as not to be condemned, not even so can he escape the notice of those who see; for he is distinguished, if from nowhere else, then from not grumbling or delaying a little, as was his custom (121) to do in all other services. For he is altogether afraid to say anything in this, lest another be sent in his place and he be left without employment.
Since, therefore, both of these are so, the one submitting in obedience of a good soul and humbled heart, tirelessly, without grumbling, without deceit, without theft, without causing scandal, but the other doing the opposite of these things, as it is written, if death, coming, should snatch them both, and on that fearful day that wicked one, I say, standing naked and ashamed on the left, looking up should see on the right the one once tonsured with him and eating with him and drinking with him, his peer, his fellow craftsman, being wholly like that very Christ in great glory, what then will he be able to say or utter at all? Truly, my brothers, nothing! But groaning and trembling and gnashing his teeth he will depart into the eternal fire. Thus therefore each of us sinners will be condemned by each of the saints, just as the faithless by the faithful and those who have sinned but not repented will be condemned by those who have perhaps sinned more and have fervently repented.
For this reason I exhort and beg all of you, that if you know yourselves to be doing something wicked and sinning and wounding and destroying your own souls, you should even now correct yourselves and each of you show repentance worthy of his sins and strive in every way to stand at the right hand of our Savior and God. But as many of you (122) as are conscious of yourselves erring in some small things, cast these things from yourselves with intense speed, so that on account of these small things you too may not be made to stand on the left, as all Scripture testifying says, and do not hold and consider them as nothing and small, but as great. For he who errs willingly in small things, while abstaining from great sins, will be condemned the more, because having mastered the greater things he was overcome by the lesser. For even one passion alone is sufficient for our destruction, as I said above and brought forward to you the holy apostles themselves, I mean John and James, as a testimony. But that I may also show you by an example the faithfulness of the word, I will ask you this.

καλά ἔχουσι φαγεῖν ἐξ ὧν μαγειρεύσω ἐγώ! Ἐάν μή ποιήσω αὐτούς νήστεις ἐκ τῆς τραπέζης ἐξαναστῆναι ἤ ἐξεμέσαι ὅσα ἄν φάγωσιν, οὐκ εἰμί ἐγώ!" καί ἁπλῶς οὕτω πάντα ποιεῖ μετά μανίας πολλῆς ὁ ἄθλιος. Καί τήν μέν μαγειρίαν τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὡσαύτως καί τό ὄσπριον αὐτῶν καπνίζει καί παρακαίει αὐτά, ἐμβάλλων πάντα ἄπλυτα καί ἀκαθάριστα εἰς τάς χύτρας, καί ἅλας ἐν αὐτοῖς ὑπέρ τό μέτρον βάλλει ποιῶν ἅλμην αὐτά, τό δέ θερμόν αὐτῶν χλιαρόν εἶναι ἐᾷ ἵνα ἀηδεσθέντες ἐκταραχθῶσιν ἐμέσαι τά βρώματα· ἐάν δέ εἴπῃ αὐτῷ ἀδελφός ἤ καί ἀποστείλῃ τι πρός τό ἑψῆσαι καί εὐτρεπίσαι αὐτό, λέγει ἀναισχύντως· "Οὐ φείδεται; Ἐκέλευσε τίνα κῦρι τόν δοῦλον αὐτοῦ! Οὐά, ἕως τότε μή φάγῃ, ἕως οὗ ἐγώ ἐγγίσω ἤ εὐτρεπίσω αὐτά!". Καί οὕτως ἐπί πᾶσι ποιοῦντος αὐτοῦ, εἰς μόνας ἐκείνας εὑρίσκεται προπηδῶν καί ἐπιτρέχων διακονίας ὁμοῦ καί δουλείας, ἔνθα γινώσκει ὁδόν ἔχειν αὐτόν κλέψαι τι ἤ νοσφίσασθαι· καί ἐάν μή μᾶλλον παρά πάντας προτιμηθῇ, φανερῶς λυπεῖται καί κρυπτῶς πρός τούς ὁμοίους αὐτοῦ καταγογγύζει θλιβόμενος· ὅταν δέ ἐπί τοῖς τοιούτοις ἐπιταγῇ, ὡς ἀπό νεκρῶν καί ὡς ἀπό τοῦ ᾅδου ἐγείρεται καί εὐθύς γάνυται τῷ προσώπῳ καί οἱ ὀφθαλμοί αὐτοῦ χαροποιοί γίνονται. Κἄν ἀπό πολλῆς πονηρίας ὑποκρίνεσθαι βουληθῇ διά τό μή καταγνωσθῆναι, ἀλλ᾿ οὐδ᾿ οὕτω λαθεῖν τούς ὁρῶντας δύναται· ὅταν γάρ ἄλλοθεν οὐδαμόθεν ἀλλ᾿ ἐκ τοῦ μή γογγύσαι ἤ ἀναβαλέσθαι μικρόν, ὡς ἐν πάσαις διακονίαις (121) ποιεῖν ἔθος ἦν αὐτῷ, διαγινώσκεται. Φοβεῖται γάρ ὅλως ἐν ταύτῃ εἰπεῖν τι, ἵνα μή ἄλλος ἀντ᾿ ἐκείνου ἀπολυθῇ καί καταλειφθῇ οὗτος ἄπρακτος.
Τούτων οὖν οὕτως ἐχόντων τῶν ἀμφοτέρων καί τοῦ μέν ὑποτασσομένου ἐν ὑπακοῇ ψυχῆς ἀγαθῆς καί τεταπεινωμένῃ καρδίᾳ ἀόκνως, ἀγογγύστως, ἀδόλως, ἀκλόπως, ἀσκανδαλίστως, τοῦ δέ τά ἐναντία τούτων ποιοῦντος, ὡς γέγραπται, ἐάν ἐλθών ὁ θάνατος ἁρπάσῃ ἀμφοτέρους αὐτούς, καί ἐν τῇ φοβερᾷ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ γυμνός καί κατῃσχυμένος ἐξ ἀριστερῶν ἱστάμενος ὁ πονηρός ἐκεῖνος λέγω , ἀποβλεψάμενος ἴδῃ ἐν τοῖς δεξιοῖς τόν ποτε μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ συναποκαρέντα καί συνεσθίοντα καί συμπίνοντα, τόν ὁμοήλικα, τόν ὁμότεχνον, ὅλον ὡς ἐκεῖνον αὐτόν τόν Χριστόν ἐν μεγάλῃ δόξᾳ ὑπάρχοντα, τί τότε ὅλως ἰσχύσει εἰπεῖν ἤ φθέγξασθαι; Ὄντως, ἀδελφοί μου, οὐδέν! Ἀλλἀ στένων καί τρέμων καί τούς ὀδόντας βρύχων ἀπελεύσεται εἰς τό αἰώνιον πῦρ. Οὕτως οὖν ἕκαστος ἡμῶν τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν ὑπό ἑκάστου τῶν ἁγίων κατακριθήσεται, ὥσπερ οἱ ἄπιστοι ὑπό τῶν πιστῶν καί οἱ ἁμαρτήσαντες μέν, μή μετανοήσαντες δέ, ὑπό τῶν πλείονα ἴσως ἁμαρτησάντων καί θερμῶς μετανοησάντων κατακριθήσονται.
∆ιά τοῦτο παρακαλῶ καί δέομαι ὑμῶν πάντων, ἵνα εἰ ἐπίστασθε ἑαυτούς πονηρόν τι ποιεῖν και ἐξαμαρτάνειν καί τάς ἰδίας ὑμῶν τιτρώσκειν καί ἀπολύειν ψυχάς, κἄν ἀπό τοῦ νῦν διορθώσησθε καί μετάνοιαν ἀξίαν τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων αὐτοῦ ἕκαστος ὑμῶν ἐπιδείξησθε καί παντί τρόπῳ σπουδάσητε ἐκ δεξιῶν στῆναι τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν καί Θεοῦ. Ὅσοι δέ (122) μικρά τινα σφάλλεσθαι ἑαυτούς συγγινώσκετε, μετά σφοδρᾶς καί ταῦτα τῆς ταχύτητος ἀπορρίψατε ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτῶν, ἵνα μή διά τά μικρά ταῦτα ἐξ ἀριστερῶν καί ὑμεῖς, ὡς πᾶσα Γραφή διαμαρτυρουμένη λέγει, σταθήσησθε, καί μή ὡς μηδαμινά καί μικρά, ἀλλ᾿ ὡς μεγάλα ταῦτα καί ἔχετε καί λογίζεσθε. Ὁ γάρ εἰς τά μικρά σφάλλων ἑκουσίως, τῶν δέ μεγάλων ἁμαρτημάτων ἀπεχόμενος, περισσοτέρως κατακριθήσεται, ὅτι τῶν μειζόνων κρατήσας ὑπό τῶν ἐλαττόνων ἐκυριεύθη. Ἀρκεῖ γάρ εἰς ἀπώλειαν καί ἕν μόνον ἡμῖν πάθος, καθώς ἀνωτέρω εἶπον καί αὐτούς ὑμῖν τούς ἁγίους ἀποστόλους, Ἰωάννην φημί καί Ἰάκωβον, εἰς μαρτυρίαν παρήγαγον. Ἵνα δέ καί διά παραδείγματος ὑμῖν δείξω τό τοῦ λόγου πιστόν, τοῦτο ὑμᾶς ἐρωτήσω.
Ὁ πρός δέκα ἄνδρας ἔχων τήν μάχην ἤ καί πρός δώδεκα, ἀδελφοί, ἐν τῷ συμβαλεῖν πόλεμον μετ᾿ αὐτῶν, ἐάν τούς προμάχους μέν καί ἀνδρειοτέρους αὐτῶν
