punishment. 39. And I will deliver you into their hands, and they shall demolish your brothel. That is, the temples of the demons. "And they shall tear down your foundation." Through these words he alluded to the divine temple; for its base, and foundation, and groundwork, was the worship performed in it. "And they shall strip you of your clothes, 81.948 and shall take the instruments of your boasting, and shall leave you naked and disgraced." Through these words he declared the sacking and the enslavement. 40, 41. And they shall bring multitudes up against you, and they shall stone you with stones, and shall slaughter you with their swords; and they shall burn your houses with fire, and shall execute judgments on you in the sight of many women. These things happened at the time of the captivity; but he related them tropologically, as of an adulterous woman being stoned, and slaughtered, and burned; for which reason, remaining with the trope, he added: "And they shall execute judgments on you in the sight of many women;" but he does not call the women "women," but tropologically calls the cities so, since he also brings the city itself, being a city, into the court of judgment in the manner of a woman. Then he alludes to the benefit from the punishment. "And I will turn you from fornication, and you shall no longer give hire." For being stripped of prosperity, and delivered to captivity, you will no longer have the resources for that evil provision, and want will become for you a cause of benefit. 42. And I will let loose my wrath upon you, and my jealousy shall be taken away from you, and I will rest, and will be concerned no more. Again, tropologically, as of a husband jealous of his wife's adultery, he said these things. For by using punishment, he says, I will put an end to your licentiousness, and I will be freed from my care for you; for your lovers will no longer move me to jealousy. And I will bring this punishment upon you: 43. Because you did not remember the day of your infancy, and you grieved me in all these things; and I, behold, I have given your ways upon your head, says Adonai the Lord. You, he says, have brought on the course of these evils, not being willing to take into consideration what you became from what you were, and how I made you, who were cheap, and small, and altogether insignificant, renowned, and very conspicuous. "And so I have not acted according to all your impiety in all your iniquities." You endure nothing, he says, worthy of your sins; for the punishment is small when compared to the impiety. 44. These are all the things that they have said against you in a parable, saying: As is the mother, so is the daughter. The common proverb, he says, befits you, that the daughter is like her mother; and above he named her mother the Hittite. 45. You are the daughter of your mother, who cast off her husband and her children, and the sister of your sisters, who cast off their husband and their children. He shows through these things that he is God not only of the Jews, but also of the nations; for he was formerly God 81.949 also of them, before they received the stain of idolatry; for which reason he said that they too cast off their husband and their children, having denied God, and having sacrificed their children to demons. Then he makes the statement clearer: Your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite. (40.) Your elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters, who dwells on your left, and your younger sister who dwells on your right is Sodom and her daughters. -He says Samaria is the elder sister, naming her not according to time, but according to the teaching of impiety; for according to time, Sodom is elder; but since she first emulated the practices of Samaria, then in part extended her transgression, so as to be likened even to Sodom. And he calls Sodom the younger sister, as having later embraced kinship with her; for he called the fellowship of impiety kinship. The phrase, "on the right and on the left," he has placed because of the position of the places; for to those in Jerusalem facing east, on the right are the

Ταῦτά ἐστι πάντα, ὅσα εἶπον κατὰ σοῦ ἐν παραβολῇ, λέγοντες· Καθὼς ἡ μήτηρ καὶ ἡ θυ γάτηρ.
