seeking glory from men, neither from you, nor from others, though we might have been a burden, as apostles of Christ. That the one presiding in the word ought not to misuse his authority for the insolence against those under him; nor indeed to lord it over them; but rather to have his rank as an occasion for humility towards them. Chapter 24. MATTHEW. Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the lord has set over his household to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his lord when he comes will find so doing. Truly I say to you, that he will set him over all that he has. But if that evil servant says in his heart, 'My lord is delaying his coming,' and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with the drunkards; 31.837 the lord of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour he does not know; and will cut him in two, and will assign his portion with the hypocrites. There will be the weeping, and the gnashing of teeth. JOHN. You call me, the Lord, and the Teacher, and you say truly; for so I am. If I then, the Lord, and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. LUKE. A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And Jesus said to them, The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors; but not so with you; but let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is greater, the one who reclines at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as one who serves. ACTS. And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the Church; and when they came to him, he said to them: You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, serving the Lord with all humility, and with many tears and trials which befell me through the plots of the Jews. TO THE CORINTHIANS 2. For you gladly bear with fools, being wise yourselves. For you bear it if someone enslaves you, if someone devours you, if someone takes from you, if someone exalts himself, if someone strikes you on the face. To my shame I say that we were weak in this respect. That one ought not to preach the Gospel out of strife, or envy, or contentiousness toward certain persons. Chapter 25. MATTHEW. Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel, nor cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. TO THE PHILIPPIANS. Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the Gospel; but the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking to cause me affliction in my chains. That one ought not to use human advantages for the preaching of the Gospel, lest the grace of God be hidden by them. Chapter 20. MATTHEW. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things 31.840 from the wise and understanding, and have revealed. them to infants. TO THE CORINTHIANS 1. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel; not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ be made void. And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in much fear and trembling; and my speech and my preaching were not in plausible words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power; so that your faith might not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. That one ought not to think that the success of the preaching is accomplished by one's own devices; but the whole
