I have said, and now I say the same, that the Typos was badly done, and to the harm of many. But the pretext for its being published was the contention among the orthodox with one another concerning wills and energies; and so that all might be at peace with one another, some approved that such utterances be silenced. MAX. And what faithful person accepts an economy that silences utterances, which the God of all has ordained to be spoken through apostles, and prophets, and teachers? And let us consider, my great lord, to what evil this matter leads when it is closely examined. For if God has set in the Church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers for the perfecting of the saints; having said in the Gospel to the apostles, and through them also to those after them: What I say to you, I say to all. And again: He that receives you, receives me; and he that rejects you, rejects me. It is therefore clear and manifest, that he who does not receive the apostles and prophets and teachers, but rejects their utterances, rejects Christ himself.
10. And let us consider another thing: God, having chosen, raised up apostles, and
prophets, and teachers, for the perfecting of the saints; but the devil, having chosen, raised up false apostles and false prophets and false teachers against piety, so that both the old law and the evangelical law might be assailed. By false apostles, and (145) false prophets, and false teachers I mean only the heretics, whose words and reasonings are perverse. As therefore he who receives the true apostles, and prophets, and teachers, receives God; so also he who receives the false apostles, and false prophets, and false teachers, receives the devil. He, therefore, who casts out the saints together with the accursed and impure heretics (accept one who speaks the truth), manifestly condemns God together with the devil.
11. If therefore, exercising ourselves on the innovations that have arisen in our times,
we find that they arrive at this supreme evil, see to it lest, under the pretext of peace, we be found to have fallen ill with the apostasy, and to be proclaiming that which the divine Apostle said would be the forerunner of the coming of the Antichrist. These things I have said to you without reserve, my lords, that you may spare both yourselves and us. Do you command that I, having these things written in the book of my heart, should come to commune in the Church in which these things are preached; and become a partaker with those who in truth cast out God, but seemingly cast out the devil with God? May it not be so for me from God, who for my sake was made man without sin. And making a prostration he said: I, if you command anything to be done to your servant, do it; I will never be a communicant with those who accept these things.
12. And being struck dumb at what had been said, they cast down their heads and were silent for
a considerable time; and looking up, and gazing at Abba Maximus, Theodosius the bishop said: We answer for you to our lord the emperor, that if you commune he will lighten the Typos. MAX. We are still very far from one another; what are we to do about the synodically confirmed utterance of the one will, to the exclusion of all energy, by Sergius and Pyrrhus? THEOD. That document was taken down and cast out. MAX. It was taken down from the stone walls, but not from the minds of souls.
