So that also the title of Paraclete contributes not a little to the demonstration of the glory of the Holy Spirit. And such are the names indicative of the greatness of its nature; but what are the operations of the Holy Spirit? By the word of the Lord, it says, were the heavens made firm, and by the Spirit of his mouth all their power. As, therefore, God the Word is the creator of the heavens, so also the Holy Spirit provides that which is firm and steadfast in virtue to the heavenly powers. And again Job: The Spirit of the Lord is what made me; not speaking of creation, as I think, but of the perfection according to human virtue. But Isaiah, speaking from the person of the Lord, that is, concerning his humanity, says, The Lord has sent me, and his Spirit. And again the psalm, showing that the power of the Spirit has penetrated all things, says, Where shall I go, and from your Spirit, and from your presence where shall I flee? And what sort and how great are the benefits that reach us from it? Just as the Lord himself 29.664 gave authority to those who received him to become children of God, so also the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of adoption. And just as our Lord is the true teacher according to what is said: But you, do not call anyone your teacher on earth; for one is your teacher, the Christ; so also the Holy Spirit has been testified by the Lord himself to teach all those who have believed in the name of the Lord, when he said: But the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send, he will teach you all things. And just as the Father is said to distribute the workings to those worthy of receiving the workings, and the Son to distribute the ministries in the offices of ministry; so the Holy Spirit is testified to distribute the gifts to those worthy of receiving the gifts. For there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of workings, but it is the same God who works all things in all. Do you see how here also the operation of the Holy Spirit is ordered together with the operation of the Father and the Son? Then also from what follows the divinity of the nature of the Holy Spirit is shown more greatly. For what does it say? But all these things are the work of one and the same Spirit, distributing to each one individually as he wills. It testifies to nothing other than his authentic and sovereign authority. Therefore in the New Testament the prophets have cried out: Thus says the Holy Spirit. But as for searching the depths of God, whence does this belong to the Spirit? Just as, it says, no one among men knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him, so also no one has known the things of God except the Spirit of God. For as no one who is another's or a stranger can oversee the inner reasonings of the soul, so clearly, and if anything of the ineffable things has fellowship with God, it is not another's, nor a stranger, that can search the depths of the judgments of God. Then also life is supplied to us from God through Christ in the Holy Spirit. For 29.665 God gives life, as Paul says: I charge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things; and Christ gives life: For my sheep, he says, hear my voice, and I give them eternal life. But we are made alive through the Spirit, as Paul says: He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. But this man, daring in all things, and not shrinking from the impending danger for those who dare to utter any blasphemous word against the Holy Spirit, declares it to be without share in divinity, writing thus about the Spirit: {EUN.} Third in order and in nature, having come into being by the command of the Father, but by the operation of the Son, honored in the third place, as the first and greatest of all things, and the only such creation of the Only-begotten, lacking divinity and creative power. {BAS.} But he who says this seems not even the
