to trust in God. Chapter 27. 2 CORINTHIANS. Such confidence we have through Christ toward God, not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God, who also made us sufficient to be ministers of the new covenant. 2 CORINTHIANS. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. That he who is entrusted with the preaching of the Gospel ought not to acquire anything more than what is necessary for his own needs. Chapter 28. MATTHEW. Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. LUKE. Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. ACTS. I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel, as you yourselves know. 2 TIMOTHY. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. That one ought not to lend himself to the care of worldly matters to those who are occupied with these things through partiality. Chapter 29. LUKE. And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 2 TIMOTHY. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life, and so forth. 31.841 That those who for the sake of pleasing their listeners neglect the boldness of God's will, enslaving themselves to those whom they wish to please, fall away from the lordship of the Lord. Chapter 30. JOHN. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? GALATIANS. For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. That a teacher must set as a goal to prepare all for a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ, but each in his own order. Chapter 31. MATTHEW. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. JOHN. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us. EPHESIANS. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. That one must in forbearance and meekness instruct those who oppose, awaiting their repentance, until he has fulfilled the measure of his care for them. Chapter 32. MATTHEW. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. 2 TIMOTHY. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil. That one must yield to those who out of fear and reverence refuse the presence of the one preaching the word, and not contentiously insist. Chapter 33. LUKE. And the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again. 31.844 That one must also withdraw from those who through ingratitude do not receive the preaching of the Gospel, not even tolerating to be benefited by them for the necessary needs of the body. Πεποίθησιν δὲ τοιαύτην ἔχομεν διὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν, οὐχ ὅτι ἱκανοί ἐσμεν ἀφ' ἑαυτῶν λογίσασθαί τι, ὡς ἐξ ἑαυτῶν· ἀλλ' ἡ ἱκανότης ἡμῶν ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὃς καὶ ἱκάνω σεν ἡμᾶς γενέσθαι διακόνους καινῆς διαθήκης. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. βʹ. Ἔχομεν δὲ τὸν θησαυρὸν τοῦτον ἐν ὀστρακίνοις σκεύεσιν, ἵνα ἡ ὑπερβολὴ τῆς δυνάμεως ᾖ τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ μὴ ἐξ ἡμῶν. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ τὸν ἐγκεχειρισμένον τὸ κήρυγμα τοῦ Εὐαγ γελίου κτᾶσθαί τι πλέον τῶν πρὸς τὴν παρ' αὐτοῦ ἀναγκαίαν χρείαν. Κεφάλ. ΚΗʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Μὴ κτήσησθε χρυσὸν, μήτε ἄργυρον, μήτε χαλκὸν εἰς τὰς ζώνας ὑμῶν· μὴ πήραν εἰς ὁδὸν, μηδὲ δύο χιτῶνας, μηδὲ ὑποδή ματα, μηδὲ ῥάβδον· ἄξιος γὰρ ὁ ἐργάτης τῆς τροφῆς αὐτοῦ ἐστι. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Μηδὲν αἴρετε εἰς ὁδὸν, μήτε ῥάβδους, μήτε πήραν, μήτε ἄρτον, μήτε ἀργύριον, μήτε ἀνὰ δύο χιτῶνας ἔχειν. ΠΡΑΞΕΙΣ. Ἀργυρίου ἢ χρυσίου ἢ ἱματισμοῦ οὐδενὸς ἐπεθύμησα, αὐτοὶ γινώσκετε. ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜ. βʹ. Οὐδ εὶς στρατευόμενος ἐμπλέκεται ταῖς τοῦ βίου πραγματείαις, ἵνα τῷ στρατολογήσαντι ἀρέσῃ. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ κιχρᾷν ἑαυτὸν εἰς τὴν περὶ τῶν βιωτι κῶν φροντίδα τοῖς κατὰ προσπάθειαν περὶ ταῦτα ἀσχολουμένοις. Κεφάλ. ΚΘʹ. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Εἶπε δέ τις αὐτῷ ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου· ∆ι δάσκαλε, εἰπὲ τῷ ἀδελφῷ μου μερίσασθαι μετ' ἐμοῦ τὴν κληρονομίαν. Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Ἄνθρωπε, τίς με κατέστησε δικαστὴν ἢ μεριστὴν ἐφ' ὑμᾶς; ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜ. βʹ. Οὐδεὶς στρατευόμενος ἐμπλέκεται ταῖς τοῦ βίου πραγματείαις, καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. 31.841 Ὅτι οἱ διὰ τὴν πρὸς τοὺς ἀκούοντας ἀρέσκειαν ἀμε λοῦντες τῆς παῤῥησίας τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ θελημάτων, ἐκείνοις ἑαυτοὺς δουλοῦντες, οἷς ἀρέσκειν θέλουσι, τῆς τοῦ Κυρίου δεσποτείας ἐκπίπτουσιν. Κεφάλ. λʹ. ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ. Πῶς δύνασθε ὑμεῖς πιστεύειν, δόξαν παρὰ ἀλλήλων λαμβάνοντες, καὶ τὴν δόξαν τὴν παρὰ τοῦ μόνου Θεοῦ οὐ ζητοῦντες; ΠΡΟΣ ΓΑΛ. Εἰ ἔτι ἀνθρώποις ἤρεσκον, Χριστοῦ δοῦλος οὐκ ἂν ἤμην. Ὅτι δεῖ σκοπὸν προκεῖσθαι τῷ διδάσκοντι, πάντας μὲν εἰς ἄνδρα τέλειον, εἰς μέτρον ἡλικίας τοῦ πλη ρώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ καταρτίσαι, ἕκαστον δὲ ἐν τῷ ἰδίῳ τάγματι. Κεφάλ. λαʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Ἔσεσθε οὖν ὑμεῖς τέλειοι, ὥσπερ ὁ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς τέλειός ἐστιν. ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ. Οὐ περὶ τούτων δὲ ἐρωτῶ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ περὶ τῶν πιστευόντων διὰ τοῦ λόγου αὐτῶν εἰς ἐμέ· ἵνα πάντες ἓν ὦσιν, καθὼς σὺ, Πάτερ, ἐν ἐμοὶ, κἀγὼ ἐν σοὶ, ἵνα καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐν ἡμῖν ἓν ὦσιν. ΠΡΟΣ ΕΦΕΣ. Καὶ αὐτὸς ἔδωκε τοὺς μὲν ἀποστόλους, τοὺς δὲ προφήτας, τοὺς δὲ ποι μένας καὶ διδασκάλους πρὸς τὸν καταρτισμὸν τῶν ἁγίων, εἰς ἔργον διακονίας, εἰς οἰκοδομὴν τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ, μέχρι καταντήσωμεν οἱ πάντες εἰς τὴν ἑνότητα τῆς πίστεως, καὶ τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ, εἰς ἄνδρα τέλειον, εἰς μέτρον ἡλικίας τοῦ πληρώματος τοῦ Χρι στοῦ. Ὅτι δεῖ ἐν ἀνεξικακίᾳ καὶ πραότητι παιδεύειν τοὺς ἀντιδιατιθεμένους, προσδοκῶντα αὐτῶν τὴν μετάνοιαν, ἕως ἂν πληρώσῃ τὸ μέτρον τῆς εἰς αὐτοὺς ἐπιμελείας. Κεφάλ. λβʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Οὐκ ἐρίσει, οὐδὲ κραυγάσει, οὔτε ἀκούσει τις ἐν ταῖς πλατείαις τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ. Κάλαμον συντετριμμένον οὐ κατεάξει, καὶ λίνον τυφόμενον οὐ σβέσει, ἕως ἂν ἐκβάλῃ εἰς νῖκος τὴν κρίσιν. ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜ. βʹ. ∆οῦλον δὲ Κυρίου οὐ δεῖ μάχεσθαι, ἀλλ' ἤπιον εἶναι πρὸς πάντας, διδακτικὸν, ἀνεξίκακον, ἐν πραΰτητι παιδεύοντα τοὺς ἀντιδιατιθεμένους· μήποτε δῷ αὐτοῖς ὁ Θεὸς μετάνοιαν εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας, καὶ ἀνα νήψωσιν ἐκ τῆς τοῦ διαβόλου παγίδος. Ὅτι δεῖ τοῖς διὰ φόβον καὶ εὐλάβειαν παραιτουμέ νοις τὴν παρουσίαν τοῦ κηρύσσοντος τὸν λόγον εἴκειν, καὶ μὴ φιλονείκως ἐγκεῖσθαι. Κεφάλ. λγʹ. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆ θος τῆς περιχώρου τῶν Γαδαρηνῶν, ἀπελθεῖν ἀπ' αὐτῶν, ὅτι φόβῳ μεγάλῳ συνείχοντο. Αὐτὸς δὲ ἐμβὰς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον, ὑπέστρεψεν. 31.844 Ὅτι δεῖ καὶ τῶν διὰ ἀγνωμοσύνην μὴ καταδεχομέ νων τὸ κήρυγμα τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου ἀναχωρεῖν, μηδὲ τὰ πρὸς τὴν ἀναγκαίαν τοῦ σώματος χρείαν παρ' αὐτῶν εὐεργετηθῆναι ἀνεχομένους.
