the younger man, greatly admiring her intelligence, called her father. ‘Give me,’ he said, ‘your daughter; 240 for I have loved her intelligence and piety.’ But the old man said: ‘It is not lawful for you, having wealthy parents, to take this poor man's daughter.’ Again the young man said, ‘Yes, I will take her, if you do not forbid it. For a daughter of noble and wealthy parents was betrothed to me, and casting her off I took to flight. But having fallen in love with your daughter because of her piety towards God and her prudent intelligence, I have been eager to be united with her.’ But the old man said to him: ‘I cannot give her to you to lead away to your father's house and to separate from my arms; for she is my only-begotten.’ ‘But I,’ said the youth, ‘will remain with you, and I will adopt your way of life.’ Then, having put off his splendid clothing, he asked for the old man's and put it on. But that man, having tested him much and variously proved his reasoning, when he knew that he was of a steadfast mind and that he was not asking for his daughter possessed by a foolish passion, but by a love of piety had chosen to live in poverty, preferring her to his own glory and nobility, taking him by the hand, led him into his own storeroom, and showed him much wealth laid up for him and an innumerable mass of money, such as the youth had never seen. And he says to him: ‘Son, I give all these things to you, in return for your choosing to become the husband of my daughter, and to become the heir of my substance.’ And having obtained this inheritance, he surpassed all the glorious and rich of the earth. 242 χῃιι 242 And Ioasaph said to Barlaam: ‘This narrative also appropriately represents my circumstances; wherefore I think these things have been said by you about me as well. But what is the test by which you seek to know the steadfastness of my mind?’ And the old man said: ‘I indeed have already tested and have known what a prudent and steadfast mind and truly upright soul you possess. But the end of the action concerning you will confirm these things. For this reason I bend my knees to our God glorified in Trinity, the creator of all things visible and invisible, the one who truly is and ever is, having neither ever had a beginning of His glorious existence, nor having an end, the terrible and all-powerful, good and merciful, that He may enlighten the eyes of your heart, and give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, that you may know what is the hope of His calling, and what is the wealth of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, that you may no longer be a stranger and a sojourner, but a fellow citizen with the saints and of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, our Lord Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 244 And Ioasaph, being deeply pierced in his heart, said: ‘Indeed, desiring to know all these things I too ask you: make known to me both the wealth of the glory of God and the exceeding greatness of His power.’ And Barlaam said to him: ‘I pray to God to teach you these things, and to place the knowledge of such things in your soul; since among men it is altogether impossible for His glory and power to be spoken, even if all the tongues of men who now exist and who have ever existed were to become one. For God,’ says the evangelist and theologian, ‘no one has ever seen; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.’ And who of those born on earth will be able to comprehend the glory and majesty of the invisible and exceedingly infinite one, except to whom He Himself may reveal it as He wishes, just as He revealed it to His prophets and apostles? Ἀλλ' ἐγώ, φησὶν ὁ νεανίσκος, παρ' ὑμῖν μενῶ, καὶ τὴν ὑμῶν ἀναδέξομαι πολιτείαν. εἶτα καὶ τὴν λαμπρὰν ἀποθέμενος ἐσθῆτα, τὰ τοῦ γέροντος αἰτησάμενος περιεβάλλετο. πολλὰ δὲ ἐκεῖνος ἐκπειράσας αὐτὸν καὶ ποικίλως τὸν αὐτοῦ δοκιμάσας λογισμόν, ὡς ἔγνω σταθερᾶς ὑπάρχειν αὐτὸν διανοίας καὶ ὡς οὐκ ἔρωτι ἀφροσύνης κατεχόμενος αἰτεῖται τὴν αὐτοῦ θυγατέρα, ἀλλ' ἔρωτι εὐσεβείας εἵλετο πενιχρῶς ζῆν, ταύτην προκρίνας τῆς αὐτοῦ δόξης καὶ εὐγενείας, κρατήσας αὐτὸν τῆς χειρός, εἰσήγαγεν εἰς τὸ ἑαυτοῦ ταμιεῖον, καὶ ὑπέδειξε πλοῦτον πολὺν ἀποκείμενον αὐτῷ καὶ χρημάτων ἀναρίθμητον ὄγκον, ὅσον οὐ τεθέατο πώποτε ὁ νεανίσκος. καί φησι πρὸς αὐτόν· Τέκνον, ταῦτα πάντα σοι δίδωμι, ἀνθ' ὧν ᾑρετίσω τῆς ἐμῆς θυγατρὸς ἀνὴρ γενέσθαι, γενέσθαι δὲ καὶ κληρονόμος τῆς ἐμῆς οὐσίας. ἥνπερ κληρονομίαν κατασχὼν ἐκεῖνος πάντας ὑπερῆρε τοὺς ἐνδόξους τῆς γῆς καὶ πλουσίους. 242 χῃιι 242 Εἶπε δὲ ὁ Ἰωάσαφ πρὸς τὸν Βαρλαάμ· Προσηκόντως καὶ αὕτη τὰ κατ' ἐμὲ παρίστησιν ἡ διήγησις· ὅθεν σοι καὶ περὶ ἐμοῦ ταῦτα λελέχθαι δοκῶ. ἀλλὰ τίς ἡ πεῖρα δι' ἧς γνῶναι ζητεῖς τὸ σταθερὸν τῆς ἐμῆς διανοίας; Καὶ ὁ γέρων ἔφη· Ἐγὼ μὲν καὶ πεπείρακα ἤδη καὶ ἔγνωκα ὁποίας ὑπάρχεις ἐχέφρονος καὶ σταθερᾶς διανοίας καὶ ψυχῆς τῷ ὄντι εὐθυτάτης. ἀλλὰ τὸ τέλος τῆς κατὰ σὲ πράξεως βεβαιώσει ταῦτα. τούτου χάριν κάμπτω τὰ γόνατά μου πρὸς τὸν ἐν Τριάδι δοξαζόμενον Θεὸν ἡμῶν, τὸν πάντων δημιουργὸν ὁρατῶν τε καὶ ἀοράτων, τὸν ὄντως ὄντα καὶ ἀεὶ ὄντα, μήτε ἀρχὴν ἐσχηκότα πώποτε τῆς ἐνδόξου ὑπάρξεως αὐτοῦ, μήτ' ἔχοντα τέλος, τὸν φοβερὸν καὶ παντοδύναμον, ἀγαθόν τε καὶ εὔσπλαγχνον, ἵνα φωτίσῃ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τῆς καρδίας σου, καὶ δῴη σοι πνεῦμα σοφίας καὶ ἀποκαλύψεως ἐν ἐπιγνώσει αὐτοῦ, εἰς τὸ εἰδέναι σε τίς ἐστιν ἡ ἐλπὶς τῆς κλήσεως αὐτοῦ, καὶ τίς ὁ πλοῦτος τῆς δόξης τῆς κληρονομίας αὐτοῦ ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις, καὶ τί τὸ ὑπερβάλλον μέγεθος τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ εἰς ἡμᾶς τοὺς πιστεύοντας, ἵνα μηκέτι ξένος ἔσῃ καὶ πάροικος, ἀλλὰ συμπολίτης τῶν ἁγίων καὶ οἰκεῖος Θεοῦ, ἐπῳκοδομημένος ἐπὶ τῷ θεμελίῳ τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ προφητῶν, ὄντος ἀκρογωνιαίου αὐτοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἐν ᾧ πᾶσα οἰκοδομὴ συναρμολογουμένη αὔξει εἰς ναὸν ἅγιον ἐν Κυρίῳ. 244 Ὁ δὲ Ἰωάσαφ, σφόδρα κατανυγεὶς τὴν καρδίαν, ἔφη· Ταῦτα δὴ πάντα κἀγὼ ποθῶν γνῶναι δέομαί σου· γνώρισόν μοι τόν τε πλοῦτον τῆς δόξης τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τὸ ὑπερβάλλον τῆς αὐτοῦ δυνάμεως. Εἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Βαρλαάμ· Τῷ Θεῷ εὔχομαι διδάξαι σε ταῦτα, καὶ τὴν γνῶσιν τῶν τοιούτων ἐνθεῖναί σου τῇ ψυχῇ· ἐπεὶ παρὰ ἀνθρώποις τὴν αὐτοῦ λεχθῆναι δόξαν καὶ δύναμιν τὸ παράπαν ἀδύνατον, κἂν πᾶσαι αἱ τῶν νυνὶ καὶ τῶν πώποτε γενομένων ἀνθρώπων γλῶσσαι ἓν γένωνται. Θεὸν γάρ, φησὶν ὁ εὐαγγελιστὴς καὶ θεολόγος, οὐδεὶς ἑώρακε πώποτε· ὁ μονογενὴς Υἱός, ὁ ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ Πατρός, ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο. τοῦ δὲ ἀοράτου καὶ ὑπεραπείρου τὴν δόξαν καὶ τὴν μεγαλωσύνην τίς ἰσχύσει γηγενῶν καταλαβέσθαι, εἰ μὴ ᾧ ἂν αὐτὸς ἀποκαλύψῃ καθ' ὅσον βούλεται, ὥσπερ τοῖς προφήταις αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀποστόλοις ἀπεκάλυψεν; ἡμεῖς δὲ
