was said to be most learned and most faithful; who received Origen the writer, as he was fleeing the insurrection of the Greeks, for two years at her own expense, and refreshed the man with her service. I found these things written in a very old book written in verse, in which was written by the hand of Origen: 64.2 "This book I found with Juliana the virgin in Caesarea, while I was being hidden by her"; who said she had received it from Symmachus himself, the interpreter of the Jews. I have not incidentally set down the virtues of these women, so that we may learn that it is possible to profit in many ways if we wish. 65 .t The Narrative of Hippolytus 65.1 In another very old book, inscribed with the name of Hippolytus, the acquaintance of the apostles, I found such a narrative, that there was a certain most noble and most beautiful virgin in the city of the Corinthians, practicing virginity. At that time, during the period of the persecutions, they accused her to the then-presiding judge, who was a Greek, as one who blasphemed both the times and the emperors and defamed the idols. And the traffickers in such things commended her beauty. 65.2 The judge, therefore, being a woman-mad man, gladly received the accusation with his equestrian ears. And when, after trying every device, he was unable to persuade the woman, then, enraged at her, he did not hand her over to punishment or to torture, but setting her up in a brothel, he commanded the one who managed these women, saying, "Take this one, bringing me three nomismata daily from her." And he, collecting the gold, gave her up to those who wanted her. When therefore the woman-hawks concerning these things knew, they lay in wait at the workshop of destruction, and giving the coin, they spoke to her things for deception. 65.3 But she, beseeching them, entreated them, saying, "I have a certain sore in a hidden place which smells horribly, and I fear that you may come to hate me; grant me therefore a few days, and you shall have power to have me even for free." Therefore with prayers she supplicated God in those days; whence God, seeing her chastity, put into a certain young magisterianus, noble in mind and in form, a fire-breathing zeal for death. And going away in the guise of debauchery, he enters late in the evening to the one who kept these women, and gives him five nomismata and says to him: "Permit me to stay this night with her." 65.4 Entering therefore into the hidden chamber, he says to her: "Arise, save yourself." And having undressed her and changed her clothes with his own garments, both with the shirts and the cloak and all the manly things, he says to her: "Covering yourself with the edge of the cloak, go out." And thus having sealed herself and gone out, she was saved, uncorrupted and undefiled. Therefore on the next day the deed was made known; the magisterianus was handed over and thrown to the beasts, so that in this also the demon might be put to shame, because he became a double martyr, both on his own behalf and on behalf of that blessed woman. 66 .t Concerning Verus, of the comites 66.1 In Ancyra of Galatia, in the city itself, I met a certain most distinguished Verus, of whom I have had long experience, who was of the comites, together with his freedwoman Bosporia; who drove to such a degree of good hope as even to disregard their children, seeing in deed the things to come. For they spend the revenues of their lands on the poor, having two daughters and four sons, to whom they give not even a vine-branch except to the married ones, saying, "After our death, all things are yours"; and carrying the fruits of their possessions, they distribute them in the churches of cities and villages. 66.2 And indeed this also is virtuous in them; when a famine occurred and was taking hold of the very bowels, they brought the heresies to orthodoxy, in many places providing their granaries for the nourishment of the poor. But for the rest, adopting a very solemn and simple manner, they wear extremely inexpensive clothes, and live on the most meager food, practicing sobriety towards God, for the most part associating with the fields and fleeing the cities, lest by the joyful welcome
