Those who, in the passion of men-pleasing, feign forbearance, and do not rebuke sinners, damage the whole, and plot against true life itself. Chap. 2. MATTHEW. But if your brother sins against you, go, rebuke him between you and him alone; if he listens to you, you have gained your brother. TO COR. 1. When you are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. TO COR. 2. For that letter, even if it grieved you for a while, now I rejoice, not that you were grieved, but that you were grieved into repentance. For you were grieved according to God, so that you might suffer loss in nothing from us. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret. TO TITUS. For this reason rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith.
DEFINITION 73. That a man should not be separated from a woman, nor a woman from a man,
unless one be caught in fornication, or is hindered in the worship of God. Chap. 1. MATTHEW. And it was said, Whoever divorces 31.852 his wife
of his, let him give her a certificate of divorce. But I say to you, that whoever divorces his wife, except for the reason of fornication, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. LUKE. If anyone comes to me, and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. MATTHEW. But I say to you, that whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. TO COR. 1. But to the married I command, not I, but the Lord, a wife not to be separated from her husband; but if she does separate, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband; and a husband not to leave his wife. That it is not lawful for the one who divorces his own wife to marry another, nor for the one divorced from her husband to be married to another. Chap. 2. MATTHEW. But I say to you, that whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. That husbands ought to love their own wives, with the love with which Christ loved the Church, giving himself up for her, that he might sanctify her. Chap. 3. TO EPHESIANS. Husbands, love your own wives, just as Christ also loved the Church, and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her with the washing of water by the word. And after a little: Thus husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies, and what follows. That wives ought to submit to their own husbands, as the Church also to Christ, doing the will of God. Chap. 4. TO EPHESIANS. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord; for the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the Church; and he is the savior of the body. But just as the Church is subject to Christ, so also wives to their own husbands in everything. TO TITUS. That they may train the young women to love their husbands, to be pure, workers at home, good, submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. 31.853 That women should not adorn themselves for outward beauty, but should have all zeal and care for good works, and consider this a true and fitting adornment for Christian women. Chap. 5. TO. TIM. 1. Likewise women to adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. That women ought to be silent in church, but at home be diligent about what pertains to God
