he having already reached old age and his sons being still infants. and his remains were placed in the aforementioned monastery of his father. 43. And they deposed Tryphon the patriarch in the month of August 912, having completed the stated time, in the 3rd indiction. and having gone to his own monastery, he died, the church remaining vacant for one year and 5 months on account of the immature age of Theophylaktos, the son of the emperor Romanos; for he was going to install him as patriarch, as has been said. 44. And a certain Basil, a Macedonian impostor, proclaiming himself to be Constantine Doukas, led many with him. Having been seized by Elephantinos the tourmarch, who was from the Opsikion, he was brought to Constantinople, and by the eparch he was deprived of one of his hands. Then, taking an opportunity, he seized the Opsikion again, and having fitted a bronze hand in place of the one that had been cut off and having fashioned an enormous sword, he went about deceiving again many of the vagrants, claiming that he was Constantine, the son of Doukas; and drawing them along with him, he stirred up a great rebellion against Romania. And having seized a fortress which is named Plateia Petra, he stored every kind of food in it; from which he would sally forth and plunder and carry off as booty those he happened upon. The emperor therefore sent an army against him and captured both him and those with him. And having brought him into the city, they interrogated him and inflicted many blows, in order to make him name the rebels, if there were any. But he falsely accused many of those in authority as being with him. But having been convicted of saying nothing true against them, he became fuel for the fire in the Amastrianon. 913 45. And the often-mentioned son of the emperor, Theophylaktos, was ordained patriarch on February 2, in the 10th indiction, when legates came from Rome, carrying a synodical tome concerning his ordination; who also installed him on the patriarchal throne. 46. And the aforementioned granddaughter of the emperor Romanos, Maria, the wife of Peter, king of Bulgaria, entered the city to visit her own father and her grandfather. Lastly she entered with three children, after her father Christopher had already died. Having therefore received much and valuable wealth from her grandfather, she returned with honor. 47. And the emperor Romanos took a wife for his son Stephen, the daughter of Gabrielios and granddaughter of Katakylas, named Anna. And at the same time as the nuptial crown, the crown of the empire was placed upon him. 48. And there was a first expedition of the Turks against the Romans in the 7th indiction, in the month of April; who, having raided as far as the city, plundered every soul in Thrace. Therefore the patrikios Theophanes, the protovestiarios and paradynasteuon, was sent to make an exchange with them, who, having dealt with them admirably and prudently, 914 accomplished all that he wished, being praised and admired much by them for his wisdom and good counsel; at which time the emperor Romanos also demonstrated his magnanimity and philanthropy, sparing no expense for the ransom of the captives. 49. And the emperor Romanos took a wife for his youngest son Constantine from the race of the Armenians, named Helene, the daughter of the patrikios Adrianos; and when she died in the month of February, in the 2nd indiction, he joined another to him. 50. And on the 11th of the month of June, in the 15th indiction, the Rus' sailed against Constantinople with ten thousand ships. And the patrikios Theophanes, the paradynasteuon and protovestiarios, was sent against them with triremes and dromons, as many as happened to be in the city; and having fitted out and prepared the fleet, and having fortified himself as much as possible with fasting and tears, he awaited the Rus', intending to destroy them in a sea battle. And when they arrived and came near the Pharos, he, lying in wait near the mouth of the Euxine Pontus at the place called Hieron, suddenly attacked them. And indeed, first sailing through with his own dromon, he broke up the formation of the Rus' ships and with the 915 prepared fire he burned up a great many, and put the rest to flight, so that
