Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, rises from supper, lays aside his garments, and taking a towel, girded himself. Then he pours water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. And after a little: You call me, the teacher, and the Lord, and you speak well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. TO THE EPHESIANS. Masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening; knowing that your Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him. 31.857

RULE 76. That children ought to honor their parents, and obey them in all things in which a command of God is not hindered.

Chap. 1. LUKE. And his mother said to him: Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been seeking you anxiously. And after a little: And he went with them, and came to Nazareth, and was submissive to them. TO THE EPHESIANS. Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promises, that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth. That parents ought to bring up their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord with gentleness and long-suffering, giving no occasion, as far as it is in them, for anger and sorrow. Chap. 2. TO THE EPHESIANS. And fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. TO THE COLOSSIANS. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

RULE 77. That virgins ought to be free from all care of the present age, in order to be able to give thanks to God without distraction in both mind and body, in the hope of the kingdom of heaven.

Chap. 1. MATTHEW. There are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it. TO THE CORINTHIANS 1. I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord; but the married man is anxious about the things of the world, how to please his wife. There is a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But the married woman is anxious about the things of the world, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit; not to lay a restraint upon you, but for the sake of good order and your undivided devotion to the Lord.

RULE 78. That it is not permitted for soldiers to extort or to accuse falsely.

Chap. 1. LUKE. Soldiers also asked him, saying: And what shall we do? 31.860 And he said to them: Do not extort from anyone, nor accuse falsely; and be content with your wages.

RULE 79. That rulers ought to be avengers of the rights of God. Chap. 1. TO THE ROMANS. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you wish then not to fear the authority? do what is good; and you will have
