linen, 10and those who work it shall be in sorrow. Through these things he alludes to the subtle work in words of the so-called philosophers; for these too cooperated with error through their eloquence. And the dogmas of these were also different; for this reason he called the linen carded. And these are ashamed when the impiety of their dogmas is |125 b| refuted and are grieved, not being strong enough to contend against the truth. And all who make strong drink will be grieved and will pain their souls. Strong drink is a concocted beverage, not a natural one; and it is both vinegary and foul-smelling, and works harm, not benefit. Such also are the dogmas of impiety, not resembling the wine that “makes glad the heart of man.” Then he teaches that the princes of Tanis—this is a city that long ago ruled Egypt—acting foolishly will be ashamed and will be able to bring no device against the preachers of piety. Then he refutes their boastful mindset; 11How will you say to the king: We are sons of the wise, sons of kings from the beginning? 12Where are your wise men? Let them tell you and let them say to you what the Lord Sabaoth wills for Egypt. For neither astrologers nor diviners will be able to teach you the economy of God. In addition to these things, he also foretells the coming division of the Egyptians and the royal change; 13The princes of Tanis have failed, and the princes of Memphis have been exalted, and they lead Egypt astray by tribes. 14For the Lord has mingled for them a spirit of error. The truth does not lead astray but leaves those who oppose and contradict it without a pilot. And these, deprived of a pilot, are naturally led astray. And he has made this clear also through what follows; And he led Egypt astray in all their works, as a drunkard and one who is vomiting at the same time is led astray. That is: he left them without a pilot because of their works. And the drunkard receives the suffering by his own will. And indicating the excess of the error, he compared them to an incontinent man drinking and vomiting at the same time, whom not even the vomiting keeps from drinking. For these too, having endured many calamities on account of their impiety, remained impious for a very long time, and the aforesaid princes are the cause of the deception, teaching them various dogmas of impiety. For some deified a dog, others a lion, others an ape, and some a wolf, others a sheep, things opposite to one another. For this reason the prophetic word said: And they lead Egypt astray by tribes. Therefore, the Lord did not lead them astray, but their teachers did; but the Lord endured their ingratitude. 15And there will be no work for the Egyptians, which shall make head and tail, beginning and end. He says their plans will be unaccomplished, and there will be a confusion of rulers and ruled. 16In that day the Egyptians shall be like women in fear and in trembling from the face of the hand of the Lord Sabaoth which he himself will lay upon them. He called the Roman kingdom the hand of the Lord, the dread of which destroyed the spirit of the Egyptians and made them appear like women. 17And the country of the Jews will be a terror to the Egyptians; everyone who names it to them will be afraid because of the counsel which the Lord Sabaoth is counseling against it. Some say that the things concerning Sennacherib are signified through these things and that when these things were announced everywhere, the Egyptians feared the Jews. But I do not find this to be so; for after these things the Egyptians marched against the Jews and led Jehoahaz, their king, captive by the spear and ............. killed Josiah and instilled fear in the Jews. I think, therefore, that the prophet foretells that the Egyptians, being delivered from error and having received the apostolic preaching, will fear the land of Judea as in it the savior of the world was born and endured the saving passion, and indeed as having been sanctified both by the cross and by the tomb and by the of the anti.......... For this reason, until this very day, Egyptians, along with other men, to that country
