I cried out to the Lord on your behalf, and he heard me, giving you those things in which you were shown to be rich. For as I was interceding for you in this way, He did not turn His face away from me, but rather shone it upon me even more; for this reason also He accepted my cry. 195 Ps 21,26a 195 Men praise for manifest works and pursuits, but God, seeing what is hidden, praises for perfect virtue and surpassing knowledge. It belongs to someone great, therefore, to say with boldness: From you, O God, is my praise, not in ordinary congregations but in a great church; and a great church is one gathered from great individuals, just as a numerous church is one collected from many. 196 Ps 21,26b A vow is a confession made of thanksgiving, if one should obtain certain things from God. 197 Ps 21,27 Since a twofold wealth is spoken of according to the scriptures, such that some are rich in good works and in all speech and all knowledge, while others are rich from false opinions and displeasing actions, it follows that for each wealth there is an opposite poverty. And he who has divine wealth, being deprived of what is worthless, would have the poverty opposite to it, so that he would be at the same time rich and poor in a praiseworthy way; just as he who has wicked wealth would also have the blameworthy poverty which is opposed to the true wealth. About those, therefore, who are praiseworthily poor, it is said, The poor shall eat and be filled. You will also say that the poor, as has already been said, are also those from the nations who formerly had no hope and were without God in the world, who will eat and be filled when they approach the faith. 198 Ps 21,28 The ends of the earth remembering God and turning back are either the nations or those who have passed over from the earth by having their citizenship in heaven. And all the families of the nations shall worship before him. When the Jews inhabited Judea, they seemed to worship before God by coming to Jerusalem and the temple which Solomon built. The nations, dwelling to the ends of the earth, were not able to perform this typical worship in a place; but they were taught to worship in spirit and in truth, remaining wherever they might be, performing their worship before God, when they live as God wills. The prophecy also agrees with this, saying: And they shall worship before him, each from his own place, all the isles of the nations, as Zephaniah says. 199 Ps 21,30ab The fat ones of the earth can be those who have been nourished in earthly things, who, having been called to repentance in spirit, putting to death the deeds of the body so as to no longer think on earthly things, having eaten the spiritual food offered by Jesus, worshiped God in spirit and in truth. It is also possible to call the fat ones of the earth the distinguished among those on earth, that is, those who pursue worldly wisdom or who are rich and rule in a perceptible way; for these too, having eaten the food from Jesus which is a remedy for the evils that previously afflicted them, will worship God, having found him to be above all the wisdom and wealth and power they had. And one might say that those who go down to the earth are all the angels coming down from heaven to earth and worshiping the Master and Savior according to the text, Let all the angels of God worship him; but consider if those who undergo the common death can go down to the earth, who will worship the Lord who went for them into the lower parts of the earth. Ps 21,30c.31a But he said well that his own soul lives for him but does not serve him, but that his seed serves him. For the nature that was assumed was united with the divinity that assumed it and has partaken of the same glory and honor. 200 Ps 21,31b.32 Some, taking the phrase A generation goes and a generation comes to refer to the two peoples, have said that the generation that goes is those of the circumcision, because they departed from the Lord by becoming a crooked and wicked generation. But the generation that comes is the calling from the nations, hastening to him, the Savior who calls. This one, therefore, will be announced to the Lord by those who preach
