much-counselling Athene went forth from the perishing." And they called Prometheus "Mind"; for mind is foresight for men. For which reason they also tell the myth that men were re-fashioned, that is, from ignorance to knowledge. And Epimetheus discovered music, and Deucalion recorded the events of the flood in Attica. And Cecrops was called "of two natures," either 1.145 because of the length of his body, or because being an Egyptian he knew the two languages. This one, after the flood of Attica, reigned over Athens for 50 years, and from Athena he named the city Athens. In his time an olive tree first grew on the acropolis. From him the land was first called Cecropia. He was the first to worship an ox and call it Zeus. In his time the temple of Delian Apollo in Delos was founded by Erichthonius, son of Cecrops. He legislated that women, while still virgins, should be married to one willing man, and be attached to no other until death; for until his time they lived indiscriminately, mingling for a time and again separating whenever they wished, so that it was unclear who this one's father might be, the race being debased by intermingling in the manner of beasts. For he said this was the cause of the flood. And after him Cranaus reigned for nine years, at which time also Sappho, who was proclaimed first of the Muses. Then Phorneus and others after him until Codrus, who reigned over them for 21 years. Therefore the kingdom of the Athenians lasted 492 years. And from then on they put forward twelve archons, by whom their state was administered. Among these archons, one named Draco first legislated for the Athenians. And after him, Solon set aside the laws of Draco. Then Thales the Milesian established laws, and again Aeschylus was tyrant for one year and 7 months. After whom Alcibiades for two years, then 18 others, and again their 1.146 rule was overthrown. In those times the judges also ruled among the sons of Israel. A recapitulation of the judges of Israel because of the histories of the Greeks. After Joshua son of Nun, from the tribe of Judah and Simeon, helping each other's allotted lands in turn, it is said that Caleb was the first to rule the people for 30 years. After this, the people, having worshiped idols, were given over to serve Chusarathon, king of Syria of Mesopotamia, for 18 years. Therefore, when the people returned to God, he raised up Othniel as the first judge, the younger brother of Caleb, who judged the people for 40 years; in his time the flood of Deucalion occurred in Greece. And again, Israel, having done evil, was delivered to Eglon king of the Moabites in the #22g 942nd year, and served for 18 years. And again, when they returned, he delivered them through the ambidextrous Ehud, who had this epithet because he used his left hand in every matter just like his right. He led the people for 80 years. In his 27th year Cecrops reigned over Attica, and in his 77th year a flood occurred in Thessaly and Ethiopia. Again the Lord delivered Israel, raging with idolatry, into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan for 20 years. After these things Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lapidoth of the tribe of Ephraim, judged Israel. Through her Barak, son of Abinoam from the tribe of Naphtali, led the battle 1.147 against Sisera, the general of Jabin, and he prevailed over all his force. But Sisera himself, escaping on foot, was killed by Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite, pierced through the jaw with a tent peg. During these times Cadmus reigned in Thebes. And after the death of Deborah, the people sinned again, and were delivered to the Midianites for 7 years. And Gideon from the tribe of Manasseh, having received faith in the victory through divine signs, rose up against them, and with the men who lapped like a dog, having defeated the 12 myriads, he ruled the people for 40 years. Abimelech his son for 3 years, Tola for 23 years, Jair the Gileadite for 22 years. After this the people sinned, and were delivered to the Ammonites for 18 years. Then, having made their return to God, they were saved through Jephthah the Gileadite for 6 years.
