nothing of the vine, which is Christ, nor leaving it barren; but improving their own fruitful branches through all diligence. Chap. 20. MATTHEW. I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 1 CORINTHIANS. I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. As builders of God's temple, preparing each person's soul, to be fitted together to the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Chap. 21. 1 CORINTHIANS. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation; and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. TO THE EPHESIANS. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. Chap. 22. What is proper to a Christian? Faith working through love. What is proper to faith? An undoubting assurance of the truth of the divinely inspired words, shaken by no reasoning, whether introduced by natural necessity, or contrived for piety. What is proper to a faithful person? To be disposed in such assurance to the power of the things said, and to dare to reject nothing, or add anything to it. For if everything that is not of faith is sin, as the Apostle says, and faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of God; everything that is outside of the divinely inspired Scripture, not being of faith, is sin. What is proper to love for God? To keep his commandments for the purpose of his glory. What is proper to love for neighbor? Not to seek one's own things, but those of the beloved for the benefit of both soul and body. What is proper to a Christian? To be born from above through baptism of water and Spirit. What is proper to one born of water? Just as Christ died to sin once for all, so also for him to be dead and 31.869 motionless to all sin, according to what is written, that As many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. What is proper to one born of the Spirit? To become that, according to the measure given, which is that from which he was born, as it is written, that That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. What is proper to one born from above? To put off the old man with his practices and desires, and to put on the new man who is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of him who created him, according to what has been said, that As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. What is proper to a Christian? To be cleansed from all defilement of flesh and spirit in the blood of Christ, and to perfect holiness in the fear of God and love of Christ, and to have no spot or wrinkle, or any such thing, but to be holy and blameless, and so to eat the body of Christ and drink the blood. For he who eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks judgment to himself. What is proper to those who eat the bread and drink the cup of the Lord? To keep a perpetual remembrance of him who died for us and rose again. What is proper to those who keep such a remembrance? To no longer live for themselves, but for him who died for them and rose again. What is proper to a Christian? For his righteousness to abound in everything, more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, according to the measure of the Lord's teaching in the Gospel. What is proper to
