with free will, and in all things perfectly possessing according to the limit and principle proper to each, divinity, I say, and humanity, but in one composite hypostasis. And accept these things without curious inquiry, in no way seeking to learn the manner, how the Son of God emptied Himself and became man from a virgin's blood without seed and incorruptibly, or what the coming together of the two natures in one hypostasis is? for by faith we were taught to hold these things that have been divinely spoken to us from the divine Scripture; but the manner we both do not know and are not able to say. Believe that the Son of God, who through the bowels of mercy became man, undertook all the natural and blameless passions of humanity (for He hungered, and thirsted, and slept, and grew weary, and was in agony by the nature of His humanity, and for our iniquities He was led to death, was crucified, and was buried, having tasted death, His divinity remaining impassible and immutable; for we attribute none of the passions at all to the impassible nature; but by what He assumed we know that He suffered and was buried, and by divine glory rose from the dead, and in incorruption ascended into the heavens), and will come again with 278 glory to judge the living and the dead in ways He Himself knows with a more godlike body, and will render to each according to His just measures. For the dead will rise and those in the tombs will be raised; and those who kept the commandments of Christ and departed with the right faith will inherit eternal life, but those who were corrupted in sins and turned aside from the right faith will go away into eternal punishment. Believe that there is no substance or kingdom of evil, nor suppose it to be without beginning or subsisting from itself, or having come into being from God; away with the absurdity! But this is our work and that of the devil, having entered into us from our inattention because we have been made with free will, and to choose this by self-determined counsel, whether good or evil. In addition to these things, confess one baptism of water and the Spirit for the remission of sins. Receive also the partaking of the immaculate mysteries of Christ, believing that in truth they are the body and blood of Christ our God, which He has given to the faithful for the remission of sins. For on the night in which He was betrayed, He made a new covenant with His holy disciples and apostles, and through them with all who believe in Him, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is broken for you for the remission of sins. Likewise also, having taken the cup, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this 280 is my blood, of the new covenant, which is for you; shed for the remission of sins; do this in remembrance of me. Therefore, the very Word of God, who is living and active, and who does all things by His power, makes and transforms by His divine energy the bread and wine of the offering into His body and blood, by the coming of the Holy Spirit, for the sanctification and enlightenment of those who partake with longing. Faithfully venerate, honoring and kissing the venerable image of the Master's likeness of the God Word who for our sake became incarnate, thinking to see the Creator Himself in the icon. For the honor of the icon, says one of the saints, passes over to the prototype; and the prototype is that which is imaged, from which the derivative is made. For seeing the depiction in an icon, with the eyes of the mind we pass over to the true form of whom the icon is, piously venerating the form of Him who for our sake was incarnate, not deifying it, but kissing it as an icon of the incarnate God, with longing and love for Him who emptied Himself for our sake even to the form of a servant; similarly we also embrace the images of His immaculate Mother and of all the saints for this reason. Προσκύνει πιστῶς τιμῶν καὶ ἀσπαζόμενος τὸ σεβάσμιον ἐκτύπωμα τοῦ ∆εσποτικοῦ χαρακτῆρος τοῦ δι' ἡμᾶς ἐνανθρωπήσαντος Θεοῦ Λόγου, αὐτὸν δοκῶν τὸν Κτίστην ὁρᾶν ἐν τῇ εἰκόνι. Ἡ τιμὴ γὰρ τῆς εἰκόνος, φησί τις τῶν ἁγίων, ἐπὶ τὸ πρωτότυπον διαβαίνει· πρωτότυπον δέ ἐστι τὸ εἰκονιζόμενον, ἐξ οὗ τὸ παράγωγον γίνεται. τὴν γὰρ ἐν εἰκόνι βλέποντες γραφήν, τοῖς τοῦ νοὸς ὀφθαλμοῖς πρὸς τὴν ἀληθινὴν διαβαίνομεν ἰδέαν οὗ ἐστιν ἡ εἰκών, εὐσεβῶς προσκυνοῦντες τὴν τοῦ δι' ἡμᾶς σαρκωθέντος μορφήν, οὐ θεοποιούμενοι, ἀλλ' ὡς εἰκόνα τοῦ σαρκωθέντος Θεοῦ κατασπαζόμενοι, πόθῳ καὶ ἀγάπῃ τοῦ κενώσαντος ἑαυτὸν δι' ἡμᾶς μέχρι καὶ δούλου μορφῆς· ὁμοίως καὶ τῆς ἀχράντου Μητρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντων τῶν ἁγίων τὰ ἐκτυπώματα τούτῳ τῷ λόγῳ περιπτυσσόμενοι. ὡσαύτως δὲ καὶ τὸν τύπον τοῦ ζωοποιοῦ καὶ
