these were taken so that through them kindred and congenital things, which ought to be joined to the heavenly, might be renewed, but the days, not being about to be renewed but completely to cease by that day, were left aside, and for this reason God did not take a portion of renewal from them, but from the ages He did take. How? Listen.

Seven ages had to be fulfilled according to the number of the seven days. The six, therefore, have already passed, but the seventh is not completed, but from it He takes the portion and adds it to the eternal age which has no end. But how much He preordained to take, or when the end of these days is to be, no one knows except the Holy Trinity alone, the one and undivided divinity. For that which was said by the Savior Jesus Christ, that not even the Son knows this day and hour, He said He was ignorant according to the nature of His humanity, not according to that of His divinity. (130) For what reason, then, did He not take a portion from the days, but takes from the ages? Because these ages, being measured by days and weeks, are called ages, but the age to come and eternal is not measurable by days, but is and will be immeasurable and unending; since days are not going to exist, but an age, He did not take a portion from the days, but from the ages, and having taken it, He joins it to the age to come. The portion of the earth, however, that is, paradise itself, was a type of the Jerusalem above, I mean, of the kingdom of heaven, in which God also placed man, so that from the type and the shadow he might be led up to the truth according to progress. And the tree of life in the midst of paradise was an image of eternal life, which is God. And Adam's rib that was built into a woman was a type of the Church, this being yet another mystery of the economy, so that, whenever he might fall from the image which had become a type of the kingdom of heaven, which was paradise, and from the tree of life, he might through the rib be joined to Christ and God and be led up again to that same ancient and first beauty.

Since Eve, being first deceived, transgressed the commandment and tasted of the fruit, and then gave it to Adam and he ate, and they were in no way willing to repent and fall down before the Master, they are banished from there and were condemned to live in this world. But behold also the ineffable goodness of God's providence for him. For since he was once brought down into corruption by sin, so that he might not, by eating from the tree of life before the time, become immortal—and he will be incorruptible, but immortal—and thus evil become immortal, God placed the flaming sword to guard the entrance to the tree of life.

4. Concerning the flood and of what things in the ark were images; and concerning Abraham and the remnant according to the election and what this remnant is; and concerning Israel and the circumcision. (131)

Therefore, having known each other they begot children and made sons and daughters, and "Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living." But when men multiplied and fell into a depth of evils and a great multitude of sins, God, being about to flood the world with water and wipe out man from the earth, did not again abandon the portion, but saved Noah and his sons and his daughters in the ark. And the ark, in turn, was a type of the Theotokos and Noah of Christ, and the people with Noah were the firstfruits of the remnant from the Jews, of those who were to believe in Christ, and indeed the wild beasts and all the cattle and the birds and
