For it was necessary for the completion of the whole, so that a world might come into being, that in each part the forms of all living creatures should grow; but it was not necessary for man, that thing most akin to wisdom, to rush to the enjoyment of these things, having changed into the wildness of beasts. 8.14.70 Wherefore even to this day, those who have a principle of self-control abstain from all such things, using green herbs and fruits of trees as relishes in most pleasant enjoyment. But to those who thought that a feast on the things mentioned was natural, teachers, moderators, and lawgivers have been appointed in the cities, whose care it was to check the immoderation of 8.14.71 desires, not permitting the fearless use of all things to all. And violets and roses and saffron and the other variety of flowers came to be for health, not for pleasure.
