of the table, with the Cherubim standing by, and the Seraphim flying, the six-winged covering their faces, all the bodiless powers with the priest interceding for you, the spiritual fire descending, the blood in the chalice being poured out from the undefiled side for your purification, are you not afraid, do you not blush, being found a liar at this fearful hour? Of the one hundred and sixty-eight hours of the week, God has set apart for Himself one and only one hour; and this you squander on worldly affairs and on jests and on conversations? With what boldness then do you approach the mysteries? with what defiled conscience? If you were carrying dung in your hands, would you dare to touch the hem of the earthly king? Not at all. Do not see that it is bread, nor think that it is wine; for it does not, like other foods, go to the latrine; away with the thought! do not think this; but just as wax, when brought near a fire, leaves nothing behind, nothing remains over; so also here think that the mysteries are consumed into the substance of the body. Wherefore, when you approach, do not think that you are partaking of the divine body from a man, but as from the Seraphim themselves with the tongs of fire, which Isaiah saw, so think that you are partaking of the divine body, and as if touching the divine and undefiled side with your lips, so let us partake of the saving blood. 49.346 Therefore, brethren, let us not abandon the churches, nor again occupy ourselves with conversations in them; let us stand with fear and trembling, our eyes cast down, but our soul upward; groaning silently, let us cry aloud in our heart. Or do you not see those who stand before a perceptible and corruptible and temporary and earthly king, how they are motionless, not speaking, not moving, not sending their eyes here and there, but somber, downcast, fearful? From them, O man, take your reproof, and so I beseech you to stand before God, just as you happen to enter before an earthly king; much more is it necessary to stand with fear before the heavenly king. I will not cease saying these things many times, until I see you corrected. And when we enter the church, let us enter as befits God, not having malice in our soul, lest when praying, we pray against ourselves, saying: Forgive us, as we also forgive our debtors. For what is said is fearful, and one might almost say, he who says this cries out such a thing to God: I have forgiven, Master, forgive; I have released, release; I have pardoned, pardon; if I have held on, hold on; if I have not released my neighbor, neither do You release my sins; with the measure I have measured, let it be measured back to me. Knowing these things, and remembering that fearful day, and taking that fire and the fearful punishments to mind, let us therefore turn from our erring way. For the hour will come when the theater of this world will be dissolved; and thus it is no longer possible to contend; it is not possible to traffic after the passing of life, it is not possible to be crowned after the dismissal of the theater. This is the time of repentance, that of judgment; this is the time of contests, that of crowns; this of labor, that of rest; this of toil, that of reward. Be aroused, I beseech you, be aroused, and let us listen eagerly to what is said. We have lived for the flesh, let us now live also for the spirit; we have lived for pleasures, let us now live also for virtues; we have lived in negligence, let us live also in repentance. Why is earth and ashes proud? Why are you puffed up, O man? why do you boast of yourself? what do you hope for from the glory and wealth of the world? Let us go out to the tombs, I beseech you, and see the mysteries there; let us see nature torn apart, bones consumed, bodies decayed; even if you are wise, examine, even if you are prudent, tell me, who

Μὴ ὅτι ἄρτος ἐστὶν ἴδῃς, μηδ' ὅτι οἶνός ἐστι νομίσῃς· οὐ γὰρ ὡς αἱ λοιπαὶ βρώσεις εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα χωρεῖ· ἄπαγε! μὴ τοῦτο νόει· ἀλλὰ ὥσπερ κηρὸς πυρὶ προσομιλήσας οὐδὲν ἀπουσιάζει, οὐδὲν περισσεύει· οὕτω καὶ ὧδε νόμιζε συναναλίσκεσθαι τὰ μυστήρια τῇ τοῦ σώματος οὐσίᾳ. ∆ιὸ καὶ προσερχόμενοι, μὴ ὡς ἐξ ἀνθρώπου νομίσητε μεταλαμβάνειν τοῦ θείου σώματος, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐξ αὐτῶν τῶν Σεραφὶμ τῇ λαβίδι τοῦ πυρὸς, ἥνπερ Ἡσαΐας εἶδε, τοῦ θείου σώματος μεταλαμβάνειν νομίζετε, καὶ ὡς τῆς θείας καὶ ἀχράντου πλευρᾶς ἐφαπτόμενοι τοῖς χείλεσιν, οὕτω τοῦ σωτηρίου αἵματος μεταλάβωμεν. 49.346 Τοιγαροῦν, ἀδελφοὶ, τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν μὴ ἀπολειπώμεθα, μήτε πάλιν ἐν αὐταῖς συντυχίαις ἑαυτοὺς ἀσχολῶμεν· στῶμεν ἔμφοβοι καὶ ἔντρομοι, κάτω νεύοντες τὸ ὄμμα, ἄνω δὲ τὴν ψυχήν· στενάζοντες ἀφώνως, ἀλαλάζωμεν τῇ καρδίᾳ. Ἢ οὐχ ὁρᾶτε τοὺς τῷ αἰσθητῷ καὶ φθαρτῷ καὶ προσκαίρῳ καὶ ἐπιγείῳ βασιλεῖ παρισταμένους, πῶς εἰσιν ἀμετακίνητοι, μὴ φθεγγόμενοι, μὴ σειόμενοι, μὴ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὧδε κἀκεῖσε πέμποντες, ἀλλὰ στυγνοὶ, κατηφεῖς, ἔμφοβοι; Ἐξ αὐτῶν, ὦ ἄνθρωπε, τὸν ἔλεγχον λάβε, καὶ οὕτω παρακαλῶ παρίστασθαι ὑμᾶς τῷ Θεῷ, ὥσπερ εἰσερχόμενοι ἐνώπιον τοῦ ἐπιγείου βασιλέως τυγχάνετε· πολλῷ μᾶλλον τῷ ἐπουρανίῳ βασιλεῖ μετὰ φόβου παρίστασθαι χρή. Ταῦτα πολλάκις λέγων οὐ παύσομαι, ἕως οὗ διορθωθέντας ἴδω. Εἰσερχόμενοι δὲ εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν, ὡς Θεῷ πρέπει εἰσέλθωμεν, μὴ μνησικακίαν ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ ἔχοντες, μήπως εὐχόμενοι, καθ' ἑαυτῶν εὐχώμεθα, λέγοντες· Ἄφες ἡμῖν, ὡς καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀφίεμεν τοῖς ὀφειλέταις ἡμῶν. Φοβερὸν γάρ ἐστι τὸ λεγόμενον, καὶ σχεδὸν εἰπεῖν, τοιοῦτο πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν βοᾷ ὁ τοῦτο λέγων· Ἀφῆκα, ∆έσποτα, ἄφες· ἔλυσα, λῦσον· συνεχώρησα, συγχώρησον· εἰ ἐκράτησα, κράτησον· εἰ μὴ ἔλυσα τῷ πλησίον, μηδὲ σὺ λύσῃς τὰ ἐμὰ ἁμαρτήματα· ἐν ᾧ μέτρῳ ἐμέτρησα, ἀντιμετρηθήτω μοι. Ταῦτα εἰδότες, καὶ τὴν φοβερὰν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην ἐνθυμηθέντες, καὶ τὸ πῦρ ἐκεῖνο, καὶ τὰ φοβερὰ κολαστήρια εἰς νοῦν λαβόντες, ἐπιστρέψωμεν λοιπὸν ἐκ τῆς πεπλανημένης ὁδοῦ ἡμῶν. Ἐλεύσεται γὰρ ὥρα ὅταν τὸ θέατρον τοῦ κόσμου τούτου διαλυθήσεται· καὶ οὕτως οὐκ ἔστι λοιπὸν ἀγωνίζεσθαι· οὐκ ἔστι μετὰ τὴν πάροδον τοῦ βίου πραγματεύσασθαι, οὐκ ἔστι μετὰ τὴν τοῦ θεάτρου ἀπόλυσιν στεφανωθῆναι. Οὗτος ὁ καιρὸς μετανοίας, ἐκεῖνος κρίσεως· οὗτος ὁ καιρὸς τῶν ἀγώνων, ἐκεῖνος τῶν στεφάνων· οὗτος κόπου, ἐκεῖνος ἀνέσεως· οὗτος καμάτου, ἐκεῖνος ἀνταποδόσεως. ∆ιεγέρθητε, παρακαλῶ, διεγέρθητε, καὶ τῶν λεγομένων προθύμως ἀκούσωμεν. Ἐζήσαμεν τῇ σαρκὶ, ζήσωμεν λοιπὸν καὶ τῷ πνεύματι· ἐζήσαμεν ταῖς ἡδοναῖς, ζήσωμεν λοιπὸν καὶ ταῖς ἀρεταῖς· ἐζήσαμεν τῇ ἀμελείᾳ, ζήσωμεν καὶ τῇ μετανοίᾳ. Τί ὑπερηφανεύεται γῆ καὶ σποδός; Τί φυσιοῦσαι, ὦ ἄνθρωπε; τί μεγαλαυχεῖς σεαυτόν; τί ἐλπίζεις ἐκ τῆς τοῦ κόσμου δόξης καὶ τοῦ πλούτου; Ἐξέλθωμεν ἐπὶ τοὺς τάφους, παρακαλῶ, καὶ ἴδωμεν τὰ ἐκεῖσε μυστήρια· ἴδωμεν τὴν φύσιν διεσπαραγμένην, ὀστᾶ βεβρωμένα, σώματα σεσηπότα· κἂν σοφὸς ᾖς, ἐπίσκεψαι, κἂν φρόνιμος, εἰπέ μοι, τίς
