and that you, having seen this as priceless, then having sold all things, should yourself buy it; but you speak in hopes and show yourself as one not willing to sell your possessions and take up the kingdom of heaven, which the Lord said is within you, if you wish. But perhaps you are poor and do not possess gold, nor estates, nor wealth, and hearing that by the sale of all one's possessions the priceless pearl is bought, so that you say: How then, having no property, will I be able (115) to acquire this divine and beautiful pearl? Concerning this, therefore, I beseech you to listen with understanding. If you have the whole world and the things in the world and, having scattered them, you distribute these to orphans and widows and to the needy poor, and you yourself become poor, but if you should at all consider what you have paid down as a worthy price, saying: Give me the pearl, for I have given all that is mine! immediately you will hear this from your Lord saying: What all of yours are you speaking of? You came forth naked from your mother’s womb and naked you will surely enter the tomb again. What then do you say are yours? Fool, do you not perceive at all? And you will not receive the pearl, nor will you receive the kingdom. But if you scatter all your possessions completely or you are exceedingly poor

καί ἀτίμητον ὡς ὄντα θεασάμενόν σε τοῦτον καί αὐτόν τότε πωλήσας ἅπαντα ἐξαγοράσαι˙ σύ δέ λέγεις ἐν ἐλπίσι καί σαυτόν ἀποδεικνύεις ὡς οὐ θέλοντα πωλῆσαι τά ὑπάρχοντα καί ἆραι οὐρανῶν τήν βασιλείαν, ἥν ἐντός σου, ἐάν θέλῃς, ὁ ∆εσπότης εἶπεν εἶναι. Ἴσως δέ πτωχός ὑπάρχεις καί οὐ κέκτησαι χρυσίον, οὐδέ κτήματα, οὐ πλοῦτον, καί ἀκούων, ὅτι πάντων ὑπαρχόντων διαπράσει ὁ ἀτίμητος ὠνεῖται μαργαρίτης, ἵνα λέγῃς ὄτι˙ Ἆρα πῶς μή ἔχων ὕπαρξιν ἐγώ ἰσχύσω (115) κτήσασθαι τόν θεῖον τοῦτον καί ὡραῖον μαργαρίτην; Περί τούτου οὖν ἀκοῦσαι συνετῶς παρακαλῶς σε. Ἐάν ἅπαντα τόν κόσμον καί τά ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἔχῃς καί σκορπίσας διανείμῃς ὀρφανοῖς καί χήραις ταῦτα καί πτωχοῖς ἠπορημένοις, καί πτωχός αὐτός γενήσῃ, ὡς ἀντάξιον δέ ὅλως τίμημα εἰ ἐννοήσῃς ὅ,τι κατεβάλου, λέγων˙ ∆ότε μοι τόν μαργαρίτην, δέδωκα γάρ ἅπαντά μου! παρ᾿ εὐθύς τοῦτο ἀκούσῃ λέγοντός σου τοῦ ∆εσπότου˙ Ποῖα ἅπαντά σου λέγεις; Σύ γυμνός ἀπό κοιλίας ἐξελήλυθας μητρός σου καί γυμνός ἐν τῷ μνημείῳ πάλιν πάντως εἰσελεύσῃ. Σά δέ ποῖα λέγεις εἶναι; Ἄφρων, ὅλως οὐκ αἰσθάνῃ; Καί οὐ λήψῃ μαργαρίτην, οὐδέ λάβῃς βασιλείαν. Ἄν δέ ἅπαντα σκορπίσῃς τά ὑπάρχοντά σου ὅλως ἤ πτωχός ὑπάρχῃς λίαν
