containing. Guarding the divine faith, I partake of the light of truth. Being guided by the light of truth, I recognize the divine faith. Therefore by these things, as the facts confirm, I know the most holy religion. I confess that I have this worship as a teacher of the knowledge of the most holy God. Having the power of this God as my ally, beginning from the ends of the Ocean, I have roused the whole world in succession with sure hopes of salvation, so that all things which, having been enslaved by so many tyrants and having given way to daily calamities, had become extinct, these, having received the vindication of the common good, might be rekindled as if by some healing. I venerate this God, whose sign my army, which is dedicated to God, bears upon its shoulders, and it is directed wherever the principle of justice may call; and from those very deeds, I immediately receive grace in return with glorious trophies. I confess to honor this God with immortal memory, I am enlightened that this One exists in the highest realms with a pure and clean mind; I call upon this One, bending the knee, fleeing all abominable blood and disgusting and repellent odors, and shunning every earthly splendor, by all of which the impious and unspeakable error, being defiled, has cast down many of the nations and whole races, delivering them to the 4.10.2 lowest regions. For what the God of all, by his providence for mankind, through his own philanthropy, has brought forth into the open for the sake of their needs, he in no way endures these things to be drawn to each person's desire, but he requires from men only a pure mind and an unspotted soul, weighing in these the deeds of virtue and piety. 4.10.3 For he is pleased by deeds of equity and gentleness, loving the meek, hating the turbulent, cherishing faith, punishing faithlessness, shattering every dynasty with arrogance, he punishes the insolence of the proud, he destroys from their foundations those who are lifted up by conceit, bestowing on the humble-minded and the long-suffering 4.10.4 what is according to their worth. Thus also holding a just kingdom in high regard, he strengthens it with his own assistance, and preserves royal understanding in the tranquility of peace. 4.11.1 I do not think I am mistaken, my brother, in confessing this one God to be the ruler and father of all, whom many of those who have reigned here, led astray by frenzied errors, attempted to deny. But such an avenging end consumed all of them, so that all the race of men after them set their misfortunes as an example for those 4.11.2 among them who emulate similar things. Of these I consider that man to have been one, whom the divine wrath, like a thunderbolt, drove from these parts and delivered to your regions, rendering the trophy among you much-talked-of for the shame that was upon him. 4.12.1 But indeed, it seems to have turned out for the best that even in our own age the punishment of such men should be shown forth conspicuously. For I myself have witnessed the ends of those who recently, with impious edicts, threw into confusion the people dedicated to God. Wherefore, great thanks be to God that, by His perfect providence, all mankind that serves the divine law, peace having been restored to them, exults and rejoices. From this I am persuaded for ourselves also that all things are in the best and safest condition, whenever He deigns to gather all men to Himself through their pure and approved religion, by means of harmony concerning the divine. Of this company of men, I mean the Christians (for my whole argument is about them), how do you think I delight to hear that the best parts of Persia, too, are abundantly adorned, just as I desire? May you, then, have the best of fortunes, and may they have the same, for they are yours, as you are theirs. For thus you will have the Master of all to be gentle, gracious, and benevolent. These people, therefore, since you are so great, I entrust to you; these same people, since you are also distinguished for piety, I place in your hands; Cherish these people in a manner befitting your own love of mankind; for you will give both to yourself and to us an indescribable grace through this trust. Τὴν θείαν πίστιν φυλάσσων τοῦ τῆς ἀληθείας φωτὸς μεταλαγχάνω. τῷ τῆς ἀληθείας φωτὶ ὁδηγούμενος τὴν θείαν πίστιν ἐπιγινώσκω. τοιγάρτοι τούτοις, ὡς τὰ πράγματα βεβαιοῖ, τὴν ἁγιωτάτην θρησκείαν γνωρίζω. διδάσκαλον τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ ἁγιωτάτου θεοῦ ταύτην τὴν λατρείαν ἔχειν ὁμολογῶ. τούτου τοῦ θεοῦ τὴν δύναμιν ἔχων σύμμαχον, ἐκ τῶν περάτων τοῦ Ὠκεανοῦ ἀρξάμενος πᾶσαν ἐφεξῆς τὴν οἰκουμένην βεβαίοις σωτηρίας ἐλπίσι διήγειρα, ὡς ἅπαντα ὅσα ὑπὸ τοσούτοις τυράννοις δεδουλωμένα ταῖς καθημεριναῖς συμφοραῖς ἐνδόντα ἐξίτηλα ἐγεγόνει, ταῦτα προσλαβόντα τὴν τῶν κοινῶν ἐκδικίαν ὥσπερ ἔκ τινος θεραπείας ἀναζωπυρηθῆναι. τοῦτον τὸν θεὸν πρεσβεύω, οὗ τὸ σημεῖον ὁ τῷ θεῷ ἀνακείμενός μου στρατὸς ὑπὲρ τῶν ὤμων φέρει, καὶ ἐφ' ἅπερ ἂν ὁ τοῦ δικαίου λόγος παρακαλῇ κατευθύνεται· ἐξ αὐτῶν δ' ἐκείνων περιφανέσι τροπαίοις αὐτίκα τὴν χάριν ἀντιλαμβάνω. τοῦτον τὸν θεὸν ἀθανάτῳ μνήμῃ τιμᾶν ὁμολογῶ, τοῦτον ἀκραιφνεῖ καὶ καθαρᾷ διανοίᾳ ἐν τοῖς ἀνωτάτω τυγχάνειν ὑπεραυγάζομαι· τοῦτον ἐπικαλοῦμαι γόνυ κλίνας, φεύγων μὲν πᾶν αἷμα βδελυκτὸν καὶ ὀσμὰς ἀηδεῖς καὶ ἀποτροπαίους, πᾶσαν δὲ γεώδη λαμπηδόνα ἐκκλίνων, οἷς ἅπασιν ἡ ἀθέμιτος καὶ ἄρρητος πλάνη χραινομένη πολλοὺς τῶν ἐθνῶν καὶ ὅλα γένη κατέρριψε τοῖς 4.10.2 κατωτάτω μέρεσι παραδοῦσα. ἃ γὰρ ὁ τῶν ὅλων θεὸς προνοίᾳ τῶν ἀνθρώπων διὰ φιλανθρωπίαν οἰκείαν χρείας ἕνεκα εἰς τοὐμφανὲς παρήγαγε, ταῦτα πρὸς τὴν ἑκάστου ἐπιθυμίαν ἕλκεσθαι οὐδαμῶς ἀνέχεται, καθαρὰν δὲ μόνην διάνοιαν καὶ ψυχὴν ἀκηλίδωτον παρὰ ἀνθρώπων ἀπαιτεῖ, τὰς τῆς ἀρετῆς καὶ εὐσεβείας πράξεις ἐν τούτοις σταθμώμενος. 4.10.3 ἐπιεικείας γὰρ καὶ ἡμερότητος ἔργοις ἀρέσκεται, πράους φιλῶν, μισῶν τοὺς ταραχώδεις, ἀγαπῶν πίστιν, ἀπιστίαν κολάζων, πᾶσαν μετὰ ἀλαζονείας δυναστείαν καταρρηγνύς, ὕβριν ὑπερηφάνων τιμωρεῖται, τοὺς ὑπὸ τύφου ἐπαιρομένους ἐκ βάθρων ἀναιρεῖ, ταπεινόφροσι καὶ ἀνεξι4.10.4 κάκοις τὰ πρὸς ἀξίαν νέμων. οὕτω καὶ βασιλείαν δικαίαν περὶ πολλοῦ ποιούμενος ταῖς παρ' ἑαυτοῦ ἐπικουρίαις κρατύνει, σύνεσίν τε βασιλικὴν τῷ γαληναίῳ τῆς εἰρήνης διαφυλάττει. 4.11.1 Οὔ μοι δοκῶ πλανᾶσθαι, ἀδελφέ μου, τοῦτον ἕνα θεὸν ὁμολογῶν πάντων ἀρχηγὸν καὶ πατέρα, ὃν πολλοὶ τῶν τῇδε βασιλευσάντων μανιώδεσι πλάναις ὑπαχθέντες ἐπεχείρησαν ἀρνήσασθαι. ἀλλ' ἐκείνους μὲν ἅπαντας τοιοῦτον τιμωρὸν τέλος κατανάλωσεν, ὡς πᾶν τὸ μετ' ἐκείνους ἀνθρώπων γένος τὰς ἐκείνων συμφορὰς ἀντ' ἄλλου παραδείγματος τοῖς 4.11.2 παρὰ τούτοις τὰ ὅμοια ζηλοῦσι τίθεσθαι. τούτων ἐκεῖνον ἕνα ἡγοῦμαι γεγονέναι, ὃν ὥσπερ τις σκηπτὸς ἡ θεία μῆνις τῶν τῇδε ἀπελάσασα τοῖς ὑμετέροις μέρεσι παραδέδωκεν, τῆς ἐπ' αὐτῷ αἰσχύνης πολυθρύλητον τὸ παρ' ὑμῖν τρόπαιον ἀποφήναντα. 4.12.1 Ἀλλὰ γὰρ ἔοικεν εἰς καλὸν προκεχωρηκέναι τὸ καὶ ἐν τῷ καθ' ἡμᾶς αἰῶνι τὴν τῶν τοιούτων τιμωρίαν περιφανῆ δειχθῆναι. ἐπεῖδον γὰρ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐκείνων τὰ τέλη τῶν ἔναγχος ἀθεμίτοις προστάγμασι τὸν τῷ θεῷ ἀνακείμενον λαὸν ἐκταραξάντων. διὸ δὴ καὶ πολλὴ χάρις τῷ θεῷ, ὅτι τελείᾳ προνοίᾳ πᾶν τὸ ἀνθρώπινον τὸ θεραπεῦον τὸν θεῖον νόμον, ἀποδοθείσης αὐτοῖς τῆς εἰρήνης, ἀγάλλεται καὶ γαυριᾷ. ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ἡμῖν αὐτοῖς πέπεισμαι ὡς ὅτι κάλλιστα καὶ ἀσφαλέστατα ἔχειν ἅπαντα, ὁπότε διὰ τῆς ἐκείνων καθαρᾶς τε καὶ δοκίμου θρησκείας ἐκ τῆς περὶ τὸ θεῖον συμφωνίας πάντας εἰς ἑαυτὸν ἀγείρειν ἀξιοῖ. Τούτου τοῦ καταλόγου τῶν ἀνθρώπων, λέγω δὴ τῶν Χριστιανῶν (ὑπὲρ τούτων ὁ πᾶς μοι λόγος), πῶς οἴει με ἥδεσθαι ἀκούοντα ὅτι καὶ τῆς Περσίδος τὰ κράτιστα ἐπὶ πλεῖστον, ὥσπερ ἔστι μοι βουλομένῳ, κεκόσμηται. σοί τ' οὖν ὡς ὅτι κάλλιστα ἐκείνοις θ' ὡσαύτως ὑπάρχοι τὰ κάλλιστα, ὅτι σοὶ κἀκεῖνοι. οὕτω γὰρ ἕξεις τὸν τῶν ὅλων δεσπότην πρᾶον, ἵλεω καὶ εὐμενῆ. τούτους τοιγαροῦν, ἐπειδὴ τοσοῦτος εἶ, σοὶ παρατίθεμαι, τοὺς αὐτοὺς τούτους, ὅτι καὶ εὐσεβείᾳ ἐπίσημος εἶ, ἐγχειρίζων· τούτους ἀγάπα ἁρμοδίως τῆς σεαυτοῦ φιλανθρωπίας· σαυτῷ τε γὰρ καὶ ἡμῖν ἀπερίγραπτον δώσεις διὰ τῆς πίστεως τὴν χάριν.
