28. (165) And abba Maximus, answering, said: If you believe thus, as do the
intelligent natures, and the Church of God, how do you compel me to commune on the basis of the Typus, which contains only the negation of these things? EPIPH. This was done out of economy, so that the people might not be harmed by such subtle expressions. And abba Maximus, answering, said: On the contrary, every person is sanctified through the precise confession of the faith, not through its negation, which is established in the Typus. And Troilus said: I also told you in the palace that it did not negate, but commanded to be silent, so that we might all be at peace. And abba Maximus, answering, said: The silence of words is the negation of words. For through the Prophet the Holy Spirit says: There are no speeches nor words, whose voices are not heard. Therefore the unspoken word is not a word at all. And Troilus said: Hold in your heart as you wish; no one hinders you. Abba Maximus said. But God did not limit all salvation to the heart, saying: He who confesses me before men, I will confess him before my Father who is in heaven. And the divine Apostle teaches, saying: For with the heart one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. If, therefore, God and the prophets and apostles of God command that the mystery be confessed with the voices of the saints—the great and awesome mystery, which is the salvation of the whole world—there is no need for the voice that proclaims this to be silenced in any way, lest the salvation of those who are silent be diminished.
29. And Epiphanius, answering with a very harsh word, said: Did you sign the libellus?
And abba Maximus said: Yes, I signed. And how did you dare, he said, to sign and to anathematize those who confess and believe as do the intelligent natures and the Catholic Church? Truly, by my judgment we are bringing you into the city, and we shall stand you bound in the forum, and bring the actors and actresses, and the chief prostitutes, and all the people, so that each man and woman may both slap and spit in your face. To these things abba Maximus, answering, said: May it be as you have said, if we have anathematized those who confess the two natures from which the Lord is, and the two natural wills and energies appropriate to him, being by nature God and man through each other. Read, my lord, the acts and the libellus, and if you find it as you have said, do what you wish. For I, and my fellow servants who signed, have anathematized those who, like Arius and Apollinarius, speak of one will and one energy, and do not confess our Lord and God to be by nature intelligent according to each of the natures from which, in which, and which He is; and for this reason is possessed of will and energy according to both for our salvation. And they say: If we are dragged down with this man, we will not eat, we will not drink; but let us rise, and have breakfast, and go in. Let us say what (168) we have heard. For this man has sold himself to Satan. And rising up, they had breakfast; and they went in with anger on the eve of the Exaltation of the precious and life-giving Cross.
30. And on the next morning Theodosius the consul came out to the aforementioned abba
Maximus, and took away all that he had, saying to him on behalf of the emperor: " Because you did not want honor, it will also be far from you. And go where you have judged yourself worthy to be, having the judgment of your disciples, the one in Mesembria, and the one in Perberis, who became the notary of our blessed grandmother." And there were also the
