The magistrates, managing their usual affairs, remained in their own lodgings, and their subjects, neither seeing nor hearing any violence from the emperor, as was natural, were little 30.30 troubled. But these two, always drawing everything to themselves to the detriment of their subjects, compelled everyone to attend upon them in the most servile manner; and it was possible to see almost every day all the law-courts for the most part deserted of men, but in the emperor's court a great crowd and insolence and jostling and every kind of servility always. 30.31 And those who seemed to be their friends, standing there all day long and always for a great part of the night, becoming sleepless and without food beyond the usual times, were being ruined, and it turned out that their supposed 30.32 good fortune resolved itself into this. However, neglecting all these things, the people disputed with one another 30.33 as to where in the world the wealth of the Romans might be. For some insisted that it was all in the hands of the barbarians, while others said the emperor had it locked up in many small chambers. 30.34 So whenever either Justinian, being a man, departs from life, or, as being the ruler of the demons, is released from life, whoever happens to be surviving at that time will know the truth.
