Calling him Hephaestus, they have made his statue in human form, and they placed a blue felt cap upon it as a symbol of the celestial revolution, where the archetypal and purest form of fire is. But the fire brought down from heaven to earth is weaker, and in need of the support and foundation of matter; 3.11.24 for this reason he is lame, needing matter for support. And having understood such a power of the sun, they called him Apollo, from the vibration of his rays. And there are nine Muses who sing to him: the sublunary sphere, and the seven of the planets, and one of the fixed stars. And they surrounded him with the laurel, on the one hand because the plant is full of fire and for this reason hateful to daemons, and on the other hand because it crackles when 3.11.25 burned, as an indication that the god prophesies. And inasmuch as the sun is an averter of evils for earthly things, they called him Heracles, from his being broken against the air as he goes from east to west. And they made a myth of his toiling through twelve labors, ascribing to him the symbol of the division of the zodiac in the heaven; and they gave him a club and a lionskin, the one a token of the unevenness, 3.11.26 the other indicative of his strength in that sign of the zodiac. And of his saving power, Asclepius is the symbol; to whom they have given the staff for the support and raising up of the sick, and the serpent is coiled around it, bearing the sign of salvation for the body and soul; for the animal is most full of spirit and it sloughs off the weakness of the body. And it seems also to be most skilled in healing; for it discovered the remedy for sharp-sightedness and it is said in myth 3.11.27 to know a certain herb for coming back to life. And again, of the choral and circular motion, by which he ripens the fruits, the power of fire is otherwise called Dionysus <ἢ> the power of fruits that make moist, or from the sun's whirling or completing its revolution through the heaven. And in that he travels around the seasons of the cosmos and the sun is the creator of times 3.11.28 and seasons, for this reason he is called Horus. And again of his agricultural power, by which come the gifts of wealth, Pluto is the symbol. However, he likewise has a destructive power, for which reason they associate Sarapis with Pluto, making the purple tunic a symbol of the light that has sunk beneath the earth, and the mutilated scepter of the power below, 3.11.29 and the gesture of his hand of departing into the unseen. And Cerberus is three-headed, 3.11.30 because there are three upper regions of the sun: rising, midday, and setting. And understanding the moon from its "selas" (light), they named her Artemis, as if "aerotemis" (cutting the air); And Artemis is Locheia (goddess of childbirth), although she is a virgin, because the power of the new moon is conducive 3.11.31 to giving birth. And what Apollo is in the sun, this Athena is in the moon; for she is 3.11.32 a symbol of prudence, being a certain Athrena. And again the moon is Hecate, from the power of her transformation and according to her forms; for this reason her power is three-formed, for the new moon she bears the white robe and golden sandals and the lit torches; and the basket which she carries on high is for the cultivation of the fruits, which she nourishes according to the increase of her light; 3.11.33 and again of the full moon the bronze sandal is a symbol. Or one might take her fiery nature from the branch of laurel, and from the poppy her fertility and the multitude of souls that settle in her as in a city, because the poppy is a symbol of a city. And she is also Eileithyia, a symbol of the generative power; 3.11.34 and she carries a bow like Artemis on account of the sharpness of birth-pangs. And again the Fates are referred to her powers: Clotho to the generative, Lachesis to the nutritive, and Atropos to the unalterable will 3.11.35 of the god. And they associate with her also the generative power of fruits, which is Demeter, imparting power to her. And the moon is comprehensive of Kore. And they also associate Dionysus with her both because of the growth of her horns 3.11.36 and because of the region of clouds that lies in the parts below. And the power of Cronus sluggish and slow and cold
